I thought it had to do with Jason returning but I could be wrong.

You're probably right, lol! And, in a way, that's part of my issue with how Drew's evolution has been handled. I'm not entirely clear on how he (and we) have gotten to this point. Was it one event, or a conflagration of events, or what? Alls I knows is, something's wrong when Yosemite Sam has more depth to him than Drew Cain does, lol.

I suppose the show could have given more thought to his change. Say Sam and Oscar's death is part of the reason he holds so tight to Scout and Willow. I don't know if we are still even supposed to acknowledge Oscar at this point though lol.

There are only four Oscars I acknowledge: Oscar Madison, Oscar Mayer, Oscar, the Academy Award; and Oscar the Grouch. All other Oscars do not exist in my world.

The first time I remember thinking Drew was an ass was when he dumped Carly flat and started hate sexing Nina. I am sure there were other things that happened, but he quickly pivoted to Willow and it spiraled from there. I thought it was a reaction to Jason being back, but honestly the show doesn't focus much on Jason vs. Drew these days.

I don't think the writers need to "redeem" Drew. They just need to keep him three-dimensional by reminding us how, in Drew's head, he's the hero, the white knight who's protecting his lady love from the corrupt and powerful Quartermaine family. But it might be a good idea for them to pull back from the scenes of Drew being hurtful towards children, like his vendetta against Danny or treatment of Scout, which aren't quite as well-motivated and do seem to tip him over into Snidely Whiplash territory, where he only exists to antagonize the show's "heroes."

Hahahah! I said a redeeming QUALITY. I didn't say I want him redeemed. He works exactly how he is a non-over-the-top, but powerful and relatable villain. And when he started to move in this direction, his only moment of niceness was that he loved his daughter. Now that he uses his daughter as a pawn, he's just a one-note cartoon. They went overboard for sure when they did that. And hurting the kids as well.

That, as they say, is the $64 question. Frankly, I don't think they can. Or, if they can, they're afraid it'll be too complex for their audience.

I might have to eat crow on this, but I would used to say these writers wouldn't be possible at it at all. But NOW I have the evolution of Willow in my face and I'm not so sure they can't think of a way to give him a redeeming quality to pull him back a litttle bit from the edge, but keep him a villain.

No, I definitely agree with everything you're saying. There's nothing WRONG with Drew's evolution. If anything, it's helped to define him as something other than a retcon twin (er, "twin"). I just think the show needs to provide more shading to his character, or else Drew's gonna wind up in the dustbin with Peter August and Dodge- er, Cyrus.

Not Dodge! lol.

But yes, that is the same thing I've been saying for a while up until Scout became more pawn than daughter. I like we are all on the same page though.

The evolution of Drew is fine with me. I wish he at least acted like he was a decent guy in public or something though. Even Sidwell pretends to be a good man in front of most people.

Of course, the show could add nuance and different shades for Drew, but my biggest gripe is Drew comes off as a clown half the time rather than a real villain. It's still by far the best story on the show though. If Drew at least put up an act and had a few real friends or defenders, he'd be more viable to me.

The sad thing is...that at first...Drew WAS putting on an act. Most definitely in front of Willow and Scout. But now that mask has come off. Perhaps it would have been best if the mask had been put back on when he was shot to keep him somewhat cunning. But alas.

If anything, I feel the writers have the wiggle room to give him nuances thanks to his meltdown on the witness stand. So...he's grown jealous of Michael? Really? Cuz he's treated like a Q more than him? More like an Alan son than him? Has he been this way the whole time? It's an interesting angle to explore. Moreso if they add on Michael's closeness to Sonny as a switch of the knife.

Let me say, however, that what I would do is figure out some way to put Drew and Jason in a love triangle with a female character who they both spark with. It could be Willow, it could be Britt, it could be someone entirely new, but I think it'd be classic soap opera, if it were done right.

And goodness knows SB and CM really do have superb hate chemistry. And both manage to play that hatred every time they share the screen today even when the scenes has nothing to do with them.

It did. He dropped her with the quickness cuz he already knew he would be second best as soon as Jason arrived. But I give that they (well, PM) grew Drew's change out gradually over a period of time...allowing him to go with his ambition. Even post-PM, they kept to that angle somewhat with Drew wearing a mask. Now that I think about it...when did he completely go 0 to 100? When he finally got into office?

Conflagration.
