I was at a cardiologist appointment today, and just looking around the room while waiting for the doctor, and saw this cardiac bulletin and it had a section about Kawasaki Syndrome, and I immediately knew what it was thanks to the original BJ/Maxie heart transplant story! They talked about Maxie’s diagnosis for I feel like weeks before the accident that killed BJ, and I have never forgotten what Monica told them. My brain retained something that has had zero impact on my life, mostly because of the name and how often they talked about it.

Have soaps taught anyone else actual knowledge?

If not for AMC and Erica's pregnancy, I never would've known about toxemia/preeclampsia (or that my own mother suffered with it while pregnant with yours truly).

As a child and pre-teen, I learned so much about sex, pregnancy, etc LOL. Anytime I didn't understand something, I asked my mom while we watched and she got very uncomfortable when answering. Many times, my dad didn't like that we had to have these conversations or that I was asking, and even threatened my mom and me that maybe I shouldn't be watching because I'm too young... but thankfully I always won and got to keep watching. 😛

So yeah, I learned what spotting was, what miscarriages are, abortions, etc. I learned about protection/condoms/STDs/AIDs. I'm sure there are other diseases and whatnot that aren't coming to mind right now. Oh probably prenups too.

Watching soaps basically taught me how to write this genre.

And yes, I did learn more about sex, and sexuality in general, from soaps than I ever did from school, parents, etc. In hindsight, I might have been a little too young though 😂😂😂

I'm sure there were plenty of other things that I learned as well.

It’s so fascinating how being exposed to these soaps taught us about women‘s health! The genre could learn a huge lesson and get back to their roots with some reality mixed with the fantasy. GH especially when it comes to medical stories!

This is actually hilarious!

The ever present Braxton-Hicks contractions.

Otherwise, it's new words for me. ATWT's Lucinda was always throwing out a new word (my favorite was 'pulchritude' meaning physical beauty) My other favorite was from GL ('recondite' meaning hidden) from Henry and Vanessa doing a crossword.

I forgot to mention before how I learned all about postpartum depression from watching Reva's exit storyline on GL (and again, how my own mother went through it after giving birth to me).

What a great idea for a topic!

I first learned about concepts like shareholders and stocks and board meetings from watching Y&R as a kid (when they actually showed the business stuff onscreen!). It certainly isn't discussed regularly on television and I wouldn't have heard about it IRL.

I feel like I also know a lot of dates of actual historical events because of researching preemptions.

As a child... I learned how paternity tests work. One of my earliest memories is a doctor explaining to Brooke what it is. Till that point I never thought a woman can sleep with a father and son and don't know who the baby daddy is. This was before reddit and social media and things like this were rare.

I also learned a lot about IVF... That storyline when they mistakenly put Brooke and Nick's embrio in Taylor's womb left a mark.

If you were watching "The Bold And The Beautiful" then things would have gotten reeeally uncomfortable, hahah. I think I learned the word "slut" and the word "whore" by watching Bold and hearing my grandma yell at the TV at Brooke every single day. She would use it only for Brooke and my aunt Tatiana! 😁 So, yeah... soaps helped me learn bad words as a child.

Haha, I never watched B&B, but AMC sure had a lot of it too ) Your others, like paternity tests and IVF, are good examples too - same for me!
