I hope John is right!

I really don’t understand how staying in the same studio where they could afford glitz and glamour 40 years ago suddenly is the reason they haven’t been able to afford glitz and glamour anymore. The rent went up?

Their budget has probably shrunk.

So how does moving to a new studio affect their sets as JMC seems to imply?

From what I've read, the new studio is one of the oldest ones in Hollywood but isn't nearly as successful as it used to be. As a result, my guess is that they are paying less in rent and just based on how the studio is set up, they'll end up with a larger studio. The money they're saving on rent, plus the added space could give them an opportunity to expand and enlarge their sets. Part of the struggle with changing out the sets is the cost for a crew to take down and put up the different sets.

The one soap (not including BTG) that has avoided the set crisis is GH due to the unique model that Frank Valentini uses where they exhaust all the scenes for each set which allows them to have more variety (and bigger sets) than the other soaps. I don't know why the others don't use the same model.

Days is in a unique studio situation as well, having had two very large sound stages to film on for years. After NBC sold the Burbank studios, Days became pretty much the only main tenant, and it has stayed like that for almost two decades. I feel being in that situation really has helped keep them on the air. They save so much on not having to build and tear down sets everyday. They have a bunch of sets that never come down like the Horton Town Square and Brady Pub.

Studio costs really are one of the least talked about reasons for the demise of soaps. Guiding Light shot in such small studios, they could only have like five or six sets up at once. Their two studios combined barely equalled one of Days studios.

I could totally see this being a blessing for B&B for so many reasons, and maybe help save on future budget cuts. I wonder if Y&R will join them there? I assume their future location will be announced soon as well.

I love JM and I adore what he is saying... but in a way all of this is so sad sounding. It's just a testament to how everyone KNOWS and even publicly admits now... that the show's glitz and glamour days are looooong gone and now we have this little hope that some of it may come back. Oh, dear. And yeah... there was one year when Brooke wore a sweatshirt for 4-5 months of the entire season, while crying that she kissed Santa. And everything looked soooo dull and ordinary, you couldn't even believe this was Bold.

I hardly doubt we'll ever see anything that much different, but... hope dies last. The problem for me is that even if the show is shot on Mars and on a 1 billion budget, the writing will still cheapen everything out to a point where it feels... not-glamorous at all. You can't fix a house, when it's rotten at the core.

My guess is Sony is in control of the Y&R move and they’ll want that show produced on their own studio lot, Sony Pictures Studios, in Culver City, CA (which is the former MGM studio lot where The Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind amongst many others in the classic MGM library were largely filmed).

Both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, fellow Sony productions, have used studios on that lot since the 90’s.

After all the tenants (including Y&R) eventually leave CBS Television City, and the building is completely emptied, what will the new owners do with Carol Burnett stage door?

They should auction it off, that is after they see if CB would like to have it

According to Deadline Hollywood, the move for B&B came at the end of their current leasing deal; Y&R is staying put, as they have left on their multi-year lease and have "no plans of relocating at this time". (x)

The studios at Culver Studios would be the logical move, but it'd also depend on studio space; I do believe Y&R holds two stages at Television City of considerable size, while B&B held one. And while spaces at Culver are considerable, they don't look as flushed/substantial as what they presently have at Television City.

Sunset Las Palmas Studios looks very much like a great place for B&B to film, and there is potential there, especially if they're [possibly] able to get two stages for the price of the one they held at Television City. I know the studio was recently used for Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's music video for "Younger and Hotter Than Me", and it looks like a lovely space. And the film One of Them Days (starring Keke Palmer and SZA) was shot at the studio, using their trailers and equipment from Quixote.

And it looks like they're warmly welcoming them in Old Hollywood style.
