Y&R: Actress leaving

I was able to watch the entire Canadian episode just now.  Everything I described happened except for a couple of minor things

After Summer exits, Nick & Phyllis comment to one another that Summer is off to conquer the world.
Correction:  Nick & Phyllis don't comment this to one another. Nick says it to Phyllis.

Harrison says he will give her a Euro coin that he had saved, to give to her, for them to spend together some day.
Correction: Harrison says he will give her a Euro coin that he had saved, that she can spend on her trip.  She says she won't spend it, but instead will hold it to spend with him when they take a trip together later on.

--
Another nuance I noticed: when Chelsea and Summer both say they're leaving Marchetti, there is some nostalgic/wistful talk about what the three of them have done working together at Marchetti.
It's not the words that they said, but instead the vibe.
It was like the three actresses were talking fondly about having worked together. But again, I wouldn't have picked up on that if I hadn't known AL was leaving.

----

Summer did have one phonecall with Daniel, during which she learned from him that Billy Phyllis fired Phyllis from Abbott Communications, so that's why Billy is hiring Sally, to replace Phyllis. She discussed this with Daniel since Phyllis is their mother.  We didn't see Daniel's side of the phonecall.
I wasn't clear if Summer told him on the phone she was going out of town, but she did tell Nick&Phyllis later that she planned to say bye to Daniel.

During the episode, Summer told someone on the phone that she's going to Milan and not returning until she finds a new creative director for Marchetti.  I got the impression she was talking to Daniel? but it could have been any of her employees.

Summer was just standing in the GCAC, in one-sided phonecalls.  I wasn't clear if she was talking to the same person in both phonecalls or two different people.  Just a few seconds, businesslike, that she's going out of town.

The fashion house Marchetti came onto Y&R several years ago as a company headquartered in Milan.  Summer went there to work and ran it.  Kyle and Harrison lived in Milan, too with her, I think? for a while, I think ? ? ?  I don't remember exactly.  [Maybe during the period when Michael Mealor was off the show]

Jabot acquired Marchetti, (I think?) as one of the gazillion corporate merger storylines on Y&R that I lost interest in tracking.
In recent years, Summer was running Marchetti from Genoa City; but I think Marchetti still has a presence in Milan, probably.

Chelsea was Marchetti's "creative director", and Sally was doing something fashion-connected for Marchetti.  Each of them quit thinking the other would take over her duties.  But they announced they were quitting at the same time, so suddenly Summer has nobody.

During the episode, she told someone on the phone that she's going to Milan and not returning until she finds a new creative director for Marchetti.

I wonder if, once she's there, if she decides to run Marchetti from Milan?  And then maybe the show would state that Harrison is living in Milan part time?

Was Kyle in any other scenes in the episode or did he just show up in the last 10 minutes for Summer's exit?

This whole thing screams last minute. Super quick last scenes with Nick and Phyllis, nothing with Daniel...

I wonder if AL was taken off contract and, unlike Conner Floyd, Melissa Ordway and others, said "No thanks. Bye!"...

Regardless, what a stupid exit.

I agree with everyone who commented on it being a last-minute stupid contrived exit episode.

Summer's exit was only part of the episode, just kind of thrown in there.

The rest of the episode was:

  • When Sharon and Nick returned, one of them mentioned that Christian enjoyed the trip. I guess Christian and Faith went with them to visit Noah in England?  Noah is still dating Jack's granddaughter Allie who lives in Europe.

  • Billy visiting the Abbott mansion, seeing the redecorating and telling Diane he doesn't like it, then leaving.
  • Sally confirming she'll work for Billy, and Phyllis being annoyed to learn that Sally got her job.
  • Adam telling Victor and Nick that Chelsea will be working for him. Nick commented to Adam that it was weird that Chelsea would give up her fashion career.

  • Phyllis meeting with Tessa to discuss Daniel's state of mind.  Phyllis wants Daniel to go back to work for Billy. Tessa says Daniel needs something different.

  • Mariah talking with Sharon. Sharon started to say that it was too bad that Mariah/Tessa/Aria didn't come on the family trip. Sharon's all cheery but finally notices Mariah is upset.
Mariah confides that she is still not okay after Ian being around months ago.  Mariah says that Ian's presence a few months ago has made Mariah question if she was *ever* mentally healthy  (since she was raised by Ian and he had controlled her etc etc etc.,) Mariah blames herself for doing Ian's bidding at times.
And then Mariah confides to Sharon that something happened on Mariah's business trip that she just returned from -- that Mariah got into a bad mental state as a result of everything -- and got drunk on hotel room alcohol, and then did something awful. Mariah didn't say what the awful thing was, but said she can't tell Tessa.  (I don't think it's cheating? Just something she thinks Tessa wouldn't forgive).

That was the end of the episode - Mariah being scared about whatever dark place she's in.

All of that stuff happened in the episode.
The Summer exit scenes were just sprinkled into the episode between the unrelated scenes.
But the episode wasn't focused on Summer.

I'm really gathering it came down to a three-year contract ending, and she opted not to renew. Her casting was announced on April 20, 2022, and she made her first episodic appearance on May 17. In comparison, she announced her exit on April 30 and is making her last episodic appearance today (May 2). Date-wise, timelines add up to the end of a three-year contract ending.

It still could be cheating, and it being something she couldn't tell Tessa, specifically if she "cheated" (that implies knowingly doing so) with a man. Since being with Tessa, has Mariah displayed anything that would imply her attraction to men?

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
    • I also never understood Alex's friendship with Sonni or keeping the secret of Marah's paternity.  Not exactly heartbroken about Ms. Sally being ushered to the Hereafter.

I'm sorry but I'm a glutton for punishment. Would love to see this woman OWNING the canvas. Telling off Leslie who tells her she's the head b!tch.
    • And in case anyone is confused; Rusty was hired by HB to work undercover and infiltrate some gang sabotaging Lewis.

    • The Dallas finale was the highest-rated episode since October 9, 1987 (Gone with the Wind). Prior to the finale, the last Dallas episode to finish ahead of a new episode of Murder, She Wrote was October 23, 1987 (Tough Love). Prior to the finale, the last Dallas episode to finish ahead of a new episode of The Cosby Show was February 22, 1985 (Shattered Dreams).
    • 40 years ago this month, the best and most pivotal television season of the 1980s came to an end. Here’s how the rookie breakout and the four soaps wrapped up the season. The Cosby Show – Cliff’s Birthday (season 1 finale, May 9): Clair and the children surprise Cliff by planning a birthday celebration around a Lena Horne concert. Dallas – Deliverance (May 10): Bobby seeks evidence to free Jenna. The Ewings go confidently to court. Mitch asks Lucy to move in. J.R. wants Sue Ellen hospitalized. Dynasty - The Heiress (May 8): Krystle learns Daniel is dead. King Galen courts Alexis. Amanda sees Michael with Elena. Sammy Jo learns Krystle will handle her money and is furious about the decision. Knots Landing – One Day in a Row (May 9): Ben aids in Karen's search for Val's babies. Mack replies to the governor's offer. Ruth uses Abby to break up Laura and Greg. Falcon Crest – Cold Comfort (May 10): Fugitive Lance desperately searches for Lorraine, who lies comatose in a San Francisco hospital. Robin returns with startling news.   Dallas – Swan Song (season 8 finale, May 17): Jenna's release from jail depresses Pam. Sue Ellen thinks she saw Dusty. Donna tells Ray about her pregnancy. Cliff consults an attorney about an annulment. Lucy and Mitch remarry. Sudden tragedy strikes Bobby. Dynasty – Royal Wedding (season 5 finale, May 15): Sammy Jo makes her roommate look like Krystle. Elena reassures Amanda about her upcoming marriage. Terrorists come for the royal wedding of Prince Michael and Amanda. Falcon Crest – Confessions (May 17): Melissa confesses to framing Lance. Pamela gives Maggie proof that Richard bribed Judge Holder. Connie reveals her love for Chase. Knots Landing – Vulnerable (May 16): Ruth wants Abby to break up Greg and Laura. Karen makes a breakthrough in her hunt for Val's babies. Joshua hampers Val's recovery. Knots Landing – The Long and Winding Road (season 6 finale, May 23): Abby fears being linked to the disappearance of Val's babies. Laura leaves Greg. The Fishers are determined to keep Val's babies. Falcon Crest – The Avenging Angel (season 4 finale, May 24): Lorraine dies. Angela throws a victory party. Cassandra's mother arrives. An explosion rips through Richard's house. 1984/85 was the season the primetime soaps pulled out all the stops to out-do each other and everything culminated in the spring. May 1985 was the zenith of primetime soaps as a genre.
