ALL: Short lived Headwriter stints

The recent departure of Patrick Mulcahey at GH got m thinking of other headwriters who were dismissed/departed after 6 months or less.

What were the reasons for the departure(if known) and what characters/stories did they contribute?

AW Harding Lemay, September 12, 1988 - November 10, 1988

Brought back Iris and Vivian, revisited the Janice/Mac/Rachel story with Evan as Janice's son. Introduced Caroline Stafford, had Cass/Nicole call off their engagement.

Replaced by Donna Swajeski who had been a scab writer. Never clear why Lemay got the ax-possibly because DW worked well during the strike and was a cheaper option.

Days

Ruth Brooks Flippen: March 17, 1980 - April 18, 1980

Her biggest storyline seemed to be Bob’s death and the aftermath, but it seemed like the show had been laying the groundwork for that before she even got there.

I haven’t heard much her run and why it was so short, only a rumor that she was meant to be a transitional writer until Nina Laemmle came on.

Didn’t he quit because he and Swajeski clashed over the show’s direction?

DW? You mean DS?

Anyway, just noting that Swajeski was network & came to writing for the show by jumping that fence. There is some thinking that people who work for the network first & then a show, or shows, have some unknown advantage.

Pete Lemay? If so, no, didn't quit. Let go. And, as far as we know, she wrote from his outlines for at least 8 months, perhaps longer. So that would effectively make a theory that they had different visions not really work at all.

I was told by a soap journo who interviewed PFS at the time that the reason she was there so short a time was this: What she pitched that she wanted to write, they had no interest in. What they told her they wanted her to write, she said were impossible stories to craft. And, they said that's why we wanted you because we thought you could write the impossible stuff. At that point, things came to a screeching halt. Impasse. What each side wanted was a hard NO from the other side.

I think I can actually imagine the consternation she may have had with Potter - and he with her!

We have certainly heard of other times & places where every single thing the writer pitched was shot down. The only thing different here is this idea that they thought she could pull a rabbit out of a hat.

So take it for whatever you wish.

This was the first one I immediately thought of as well. It’s weird because for whatever reason she got strangely blamed by some for stuff for already ongoing stories like Subsex, Bo the Mime, Princess Gina, botching a Kate/Nicholas/Billie triangle etc. I guess Corday and Langan just threw her under the bus at the time when Days was unraveling fast.

Of course the Langan era of Days was…something else to put it politely lol…

I know Jessica Klein’s disastrous ATWT stint was mentioned already but basically ATWT was a revolving door there 1996-1998:

February 1996 – December 1996

Stephen  Black and Henry Stern

December 1996 – May 1997 Stephen Demorest, Mel Brez and Addie Walsh

May 1997 – October 1997 Jessica Klein

October-December 1997Stephen Demorest, Mel Brez and Addie Walsh

December 1997– February 1998

Addie Walsh

What a mess.

Also Victor Miller and Michael Conforti only wrote for GL October 1996-February 1997 as they cleaned up McTavish’s mess but were soon replaced by B&E.

Good God! Especially on GL's part.

In general, why are head writer tenures generally short? Is it burnout from the 5 episode a week workload? Is it simply because soaps are a never-ending institution so people constantly cycle out?

    • Are we sure Kat isn't really Dani's daughter?  She acts a lot more like Dani then either Chelsea or Naomi do.... imho.   She certainly loves breaking and entering people's places and has a one track vendetta like her auntie Dani. I'm glad to see some movement on the Joey/Vanessa/Doug story, but thinking about it... the pacing for this tale has been just right.  We needed to see Doug sink further and further into gambling addiction to the point where he can't pay it back... and we needed to see Joey/Vanessa in conversations getting to know one another before the two ended up hooking up.   So now I'm curious to see what happens next... and if Nicole and/or Dani will weigh in on this.. and if the dropped Jacob angle will be revived. Nice to see Ashley/Derek being support for the Bill/Hayley/Naomi/Chelsea situation with Ashley finally having a scene with Hayley while Derek lets Naomi know about Bill.   So Chelsea's new crush is the doctor handling Bill's case.  I wonder why she's acting so mysterious. Thoughts on the 'Coming next week' scenes: Andre... Dani is acting like a teenager about to be discovered hooking up with her boyfriend by her dad.  You're more mature than her..imho. Now Sharon/Tracy/Anita have buried the hatchet?   Or maybe it's a fake out.
    • The 90’s apartment Phyllis had will always be her best set, IMO.

    • I agree with you about rules & regs but, frankly, choosing between retirement & working uncredited, come on, we know what she'd choose & she'd be right to do so.
    • Hold up, hold up, hold up!!!   MADISON MONTGOMERY???   If a Zoe, Misty Day, and/or Queenie shows up...lol.
    • The Producers Guild of America (PGA), while not a union, does have rules and regulations regarding membership, conduct, and yes, credits. Assuming she’s a member of course. Being uncredited for what work exactly? Given her years of experience and multiple Emmy wins - why now decide you want to go uncredited for work you’ve done?
    • That's very sad. What party he represented for and which area he represented?
    • -- Daisy is a terrible name. If you're not going with a family legacy name, you gotta do better than that. -- When Frank is done with a character, he makes sure that character is painted in the worst possible way and the shade is thrown in the script. Natalia is being treated like a punchline to a bad joke....not that I mind. -- So Cody talked about Britt today. Gee, I wonder what's going on.
    • I remember another Phyllis residence -- I don't think that was a set shown abovethread, but I'm not sure.  Trying to remember some things off the top of my head but I might be wrong about part of it: I'm referring to the condo where Phick first had sex after the Michael/Lauren wedding.  I think they specifically referred to it as a condo?  After Stafford's Phyllis went into a coma, Jack sold it and I think he gave money to HunterKing's Summer when she married Austin? Or he gave Summer the condo?    There was a convoluted side plot about someone needing money and something from this was drawn in a shady way.  Something about it being sold?  And then when GinaT's Phyllis awoke from her coma, she had no condo to come back to.
    • Which union rules? SMH. Jill’s back, uncredited.
    • Yeah I don’t get why she wouldn’t be credited if she’s back. That seems odd. I hope it’s true though, because the show needs a change. Badddddd.
