Lloyd Bridges, acting patriarch, dead at 85
Long, varied career for illustrious thesp
By Richard Natale
Lloyd Bridges, who had a long and successful acting career (in films like “High Noon” and TV series such as the popular “Sea Hunt”) and who spawned a small acting dynasty thanks to his sons Beau and Jeff Bridges, died of natural causes at his Los Angeles home Tuesday. His wife Dorothy, Beau and daughter Cindy were at his side. He was 85.
Although Bridges had suffered a series of minor illnesses during the past year, he continued to work, and recently completed two feature films, “Jane Austen’s Mafia” and “Meeting Daddy,” the latter with Beau.
Working as an actor since the mid-1930s, Bridges toiled steadily in films, TV and on stage for decades, but his career got a second wind thanks to comedy roles, beginning with the 1980 “Airplane!”
Born Jan. 15, 1913, in the northern California town of San Leandro, Bridges first migrated south to attend UCLA where he majored in political science, with ambitions to be an attorney. During college, he was bitten by the acting bug. Playwright Sidney Howard saw Bridges in a production of his play “Yellow Jack” and encouraged his ambitions.
Right out of school, he toured with a production of “Taming of the Shrew.” Working to make ends meet, he toured in stock and with a group of friends formed the Playroom Club, a small Off Broadway theater.
Bridges supported himself by making records of the Bible, plays and poetry for the American Foundation for the Blind. His baritone in later years graced commercials with equal assurance and ease. (In 1990 he settled a suit alleging he misrepresented investment products in a TV advertising endorsement.)
For a time, he and wife Dorothy taught school in Darien, Conn. Spotted in a modern-dress version of “Othello” in the late ’30s, he was signed to a long-term contract by Columbia Pictures and made his film debut in 1941. His early films include “Here Comes Mr. Jordan,” “Talk of the Town,” “Louisiana Hayride” and “A Walk in the Sun.”
Columbia assigned him mostly to secondary roles, sometimes even the heavy. Then in 1945, he broke off as a freelance actor and the roles got better, including leads in B films “The Sound of Fury,” “Three Steps North” and “Whistle at Eaton Falls,” all in the late ’40s.
He soon graduated to A-level studio productions such as “Home of the Brave” (1949) and “High Noon” and “Plymouth Adventure” (both in 1952).
However, he hit his stride in TV, appearing frequently in live dramas on such anthology series as “Alcoa Hour” and “Playhouse 90.” He also continued to work onstage in L.A., including productions at the Actor’s Lab.
It was during this period that he appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee and recanted his earlier membership in the Communist party.
His film work continued with pics including “The Rainmaker” (1956) and “The Goddess” (1958), but in February 1957, Bridges went underwater with the 30-minute series “Sea Hunt.”
The networks passed on the series, figuring that no one could sustain a deep-sea adventure week after week, so the show began airing in syndication in January 1958. It was a big hit, and producer Ivan Tors and Bridges eventually filmed 156 episodes of the series, which made Bridges a household name. (A very young Beau Bridges also appeared in several episodes.)
Other series followed, each of them lasting only one season: the half-hour drama anthology “The Lloyd Bridges Show” (1962-63); “The Loner,” a 1965-66 western; drama “San Francisco Intl. Airport” (1970-71) and cop drama “Joe Forrester” (1975-76).
He returned to Broadway to star in “O’ Men, O’ Women,” “Cactus Flower” and an abbreviated run in “Man of La Mancha.” He also thrived in TV movies and miniseries through the 1980s, such as “Silent Night, Lonely Night,” “Moviola,” “The Great Wallendas,” “The People Next Door,” “The Blue and the Gray,” “East of Eden,” “George Washington” and “Roots.”
However, his film career in the ’60s and ’70s consisted mostly of forgettable fare, the best of which were the 1966 “Around the World Under the Sea” and the 1969 “The Happy Ending.” Then in 1980, he took a supporting role in the spoof “Airplane!” as a befuddled flight controller. It exploited Bridges’ (and co-star Leslie Nielsen’s) theretofore unheralded comic abilities.
The film’s sequel and two back-to-back “Hot Shots” spoofs further exposed Bridges’ comedic abilities and made him familiar to an entirely new generation of audiences.
After that, the movie roles again got better, with appearances in “Cousins,” “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” and in the thriller “Blown Away.” In the latter two pics, he co-starred with son Jeff.
Bridges is survived by his wife, his sons and daughter and 11 grandchildren.

Brian Coyle 2004
Brian Coyle is the younger brother of Shannon Coyle and the half-brother of Aidan Connor. Brian was born from an affair between his mother Susan Coyle and the kids' collective father Jason Connor.
Brian was born after Shannon from Jason's and Susan's affair, with his mother creating an imaginary father always on business to avoid detection.
After some years, Jason wanting to leave his wife Debra Connor for Susan. Brian was a witness to Jason and Susan splitting Aidan and Shannon up from each other when they met and started dating, but Aidan and Shannon continued to be in love and even have sex.
When Shannon got pregnant, Jason told her the truth, leading to her fighting him, falling, and dying from hitting her head. Jason and Susan planned to expedite their plans to leave the country with Brian, and Brian was questioned when Shannon was found. When it was discovered that Shannon was pregnant by her brother, he was a suspect but he denied doing anything to his sister.
After Jason was shot dead, Susan and Brian were taken into custody. In court, Susan later revealed the details of the affair with Jason and the conception of their children, much to the shock of Brian who realized what he was born into and by the truth of his sister’s murder.
Susan was cleared of the murder after it was revealed that Debra flew into a rage over the affair, and Debra and Susan are arrested. Left without their parents or sister, Aidan approached Brian to discuss their collective future as a family.
Greg Engles 2011
Gregory Engles is a con artist and the brother of missing child Jason Engels, incentivizing the NYPD to find Jason eight years later when people gave up and forgot.
Greg's parents died in a plane crash in 2001, leaving him and his little brother Jason, who pronounced his name "Gig" unintentionally, being moved into a foster home. The parents were drug addicts and would use the support money to by more drugs and neglect the two brothers.
Jason was kidnapped in 2003 by grieving mother Miriam Penner, who lost her son Daniel to cancer and wanted to replace him, remembering Jason because Greg babysat Danny. Multiple witnesses saw the abduction happen, but they didn't intervene in a classic bystander effect, not knowing what to do and assume others there would try to rescue him. Everyone saw a "man" abduct Jason, but all they actually remembered was Miriam's green station wagon.
Jason's case got media attention and had extensive manhunts, but when the next big crime came along, the efforts swiftly depleted. Living without answers for eight years, Greg's grief and paranoia over what could've happened to Jason led him to formulate a plan once he was in college, evoking Jason's disappearance to get it investigated again. He recruited frat boy Doug and young co-ed Lizzie Harmon as part of his ruse, planning to stage Lizzie's "rape and abduction" and Doug the "rapist and kidnapper" in hopes of attracting the attention of Special Victims, a police unit with a high success rate.
Lizzie's "rape" at knifepoint by Doug was streamed to the entirety of Westmore College by hacking the server, no one calling the cops until the video was finished playing, yet another bystander effect. Greg was interviewed as a student who volunteered in the college's tech management. Leading the cops on a wild goose chase by tracking the rerouted IP address as well as Lizzie's movements throughout the day, they come across multiple red herrings, along with the three wise monkeys, "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil", in graffiti, evoking the monkey shirt Jason was wearing in the photo released of him when he was kidnapped. Lizzie's later streamed tied to a bed and screaming for help to turn her case into a ransom.
When he's felt like the case has gotten enough attention, and when the squad identifies him from his final lure being to his foster home at the brownstone and footage of him buying burner phones three used to communicate, he directly texts Stabler and says he's done playing games, telling him to follow his directions to a warehouse and come alone. To add incentive, he's saying he's watching through every camera he can. He directs Stabler through a series of texts on the road, and when he's seen in the warehouse, he shows a stream of Lizzie held captive on his tablet. Using that leverage, he tosses Jason's case file to Stabler and demands to know where Jason is after eight years.
He goes into the bystander effect that happened the day of his brother's abduction, which Stabler notes. Trying to appeal to Greg's sympathy and saying Lizzie has a family too, he swears to take his case and nearly gets Greg to reveal the truth about her "captivity". By that point, Captain Cragen has arrived with backup, having tracked Stabler's texts and Greg's phone when it was on even though Stabler's was turned off when Greg took it. Greg furiously smashes the tablet and says to the squad "Lizzie's dead, you killed her".
He's arrested, but Stabler quickly deduces with Greg's conscience, he wouldn't kill Lizzie and she's still alive. Greg again pleads for his brother back. Re-interviewing the witnesses, they get the whole story and finally find out about Penner and her dead son. Just when she's fleeing her house, the police stop her and arrest her, finding Jason unconscious in the trunk and resuscitating Jason at the hospital. When Greg hears he's being checked out by a doctor, he gives up Lizzie's location.
Lizzie's revealed to be fine and sitting next to Doug, only with a shiner on her face from the staged abduction. The detectives are shocked, and Greg affirmatively says none of the trio went through any harm in their ruse. The detectives are livid, but Lizzie defends Greg with how they got his brother rescued and asks to call her mother. Greg says he'll take all the blame so Doug and Lizzie get immunity, saying it was all worth it. Asking to see Jason before he's booked, Benson brings Jason to reunite with him. Greg emotionally reminds Jason of himself being his brother, and although silent at first, Jason cheers "Gig" and runs into Greg's arms, leaving Greg tearing up. Due to his intentions to save his abducted brother, he likely faced a lesser charge.
