Structurally speaking, there was nothing wrong with "The Haves and the Have-Nots."  It just suffered from the same deficiencies that have marred all of Tyler Perry's shows: racist/misogynistic/homophobic tropes, and an inability to build scenes that get to the gosh darn point.

I love all the support MVJ is getting from the actors who she wrote for on GH and B&B. For someone who spent most of her career as script writer, her work really resonated with these actors and she seemed to forge really unique relationships with these people.

I loved this one from Vanessa Marcil on MVJ's recent Instagram post:

The idea, the concept and the characters were alright. The issue is that Tyler Perry wrote every episode and he's - at best - a mediocre writer. If he had left it with coming up with the basics and then allowed other writing talent to take over, maybe it could've been a decent show.

I’m not black myself but a few black actresses and actors are on my top 10 lists and it’s hard to see so many get wasted.

BUT everytime I watched GH and their black characters I have to say that the actors are doing the best they can with the material given.  But it always felt forced and like on Y&R - Winters Wednesdays or Tuesdays. I don’t know what it is but it ain’t flowing as natural compared to the other parts of the show which is such a shame.  I do blame some fans for it too. They have really tried with Curtis etc. But the fans won’t even give them a chance.

Well, it's what happens when you rush write, produce and push out material. IIRC, actors on The Oval revealed they shot 22 episodes in three-weeks time. That, to me, is ridiculous. Even with simplistic, not-too-bright scripts. But he does employ solid actors and that's great... just wish he'd employ writers, etc. because that would be an amazing opportunity for Black talent.

Two characters on this show are former Tyler Perry employees, interestingly. They are the gal who plays Bill's new fiancee and the Vanessa McBride character. I'm somewhat surprised that there aren't even more of TP's "minions" on this show, but there's always tomorrow.

I'd expect a bunch to turn up since it tapes in Atlanta and they want at least the lesser known names to be based there. I'm sure Beyond the Gates will also pay better than Tyler Perry's shows, even at recurring capacity.
