Roark Critchlow, Mike Horton, Days of our Lives, DAYS, DOOL, #DAYS, #DOOL, #DaysofourLives

After a 12-year absence, actor Roark Critchlow is back in Salem, reprising his role as Dr. Mike Horton on “Days of our Lives.” His first air date is set for Tuesday, October 4.

Critchlow’s return was first revealed earlier this month when Peacock released a fall trailer teasing what’s to come on the drama series, which recently moved to the streaming service after spending more than 56 years on NBC. Critchlow joined the cast of the series in 1994 and remained a full-time cast member until 1999. He reprised the role again in 2010 for a few episodes to honor the late Frances Reid, who played Alice Horton, Mike’s grandmother. Details about the actor’s return up to that point had been kept under wraps. Now, in an interview with Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands news, Critchlow is speaking out about his return to the series, including who he shares his first scenes with, why he’s back in town, and how his return to the canvas came to be.

First things first: Critchlow will first appear on-screen alongside Susan Seaforth Hayes and Bill Hayes (Julie and Doug Williams). His visit will be a short one. “I was nervous. You get back in there and you just feel … it’s not like a heavy weight, but it’s a heritage,” says Critchlow of working with the legendary actors. “To be able to work with people who have been at it as well and as long as they have? We actually had a couple of lovely scenes. It was like the people that you knew from 20 years ago or whatever. It was not just the characters going, “Oh, hi. Hey, Mike, you’re back. It’s good to see you, too.’ It was so genuine, because they were both coming from a human place. It wasn’t just the actors and the characters. It really enjoyed those scenes.”

As for how his return came to be, Critchlow credits the writers for thinking of him as the offer came as a surprise. “I’m not really sure how it evolved,” he tells Digest. “They just contacted my agent. He was like, ‘Hey. They’ve got a couple of episodes. Do you want to go?’ I was like, ‘Hell, yeah. That sounds good.'”

In addition to the Hayes, Critchlow also worked alongside Cady McClain and Matthew Ashford. The former plays a recast Jennifer Horton, Critchlow’s on-screen sister, and the latter plays Jack Deveraux, Jennifer’s husband. During Critchlow’s initial time on the soap, another actor played the part of Jack, the actor points out. “When I was on it, it was Mark Valley [ex-Jack]. That was actually kind of fun, because he and I shared a whole bunch of stories. Now we’re both in the same spot in our careers.”

Meanwhile, working with McClain for the first time became natural for Critchlow despite another actress playing his character’s sister during his initial run. “She and I dropped in really easily, I felt,” said Critchlow of his experience. “It was a very nice, natural care for each other. It wasn’t difficult, that’s for sure. Obviously, Missy [Reeves, ex-Jennifer] is a super-duper person. But you don’t compare people. Cady and I chatted. We got on good. In terms of story, I thought we pulled it off nicely as being people who’ve known each other their whole lives.”

During his return to the Los Angeles area for taping, Critchlow was able to spend time catching up with friends, his kids and his ex-wife, Maria, as he primarily spends most of his days in Canada, more specifically Summerland, British Columbia, where his parents live and where he went to high school. “I came back because mom and day are getting older,” Critchlow tells Digest. “I thought, ‘I’ll come back home, take a break and gather myself.”

Since his initial departure from the soap in 1999, Critchlow has gone on to star in such shows as “V” and the original “Pretty Little Liars” series. He’s also appeared in episodes of “Drop Dead Diva,” “NCIS,” “Supernatural,” “UnREAL,” and “Arrow,” among others. He reunited with former “Days of our Lives” co-star Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady) in the 2016 TV movie “Murder, She Baked: A Peach Cobbler Mystery.” He can next be seen in the Christmas TV movie, “My Favorite Christmas Tree.”

I did a poll on another message board 2 months ago on who is your favorite Mike Horton. MTW won by a landslide which I expected. Roark took most of the rest of the votes. And, Wesley Eure turned in a very poor showing. In discussion it became clear that most people had no idea who he was. But, the single most interesting thing came out in discussion & that was that by far most of the people strongly felt that Roark & Christie Clark SHOULD BE Mike & Carrie, period, the end.

Mike was so intertwined with Nancy and Craig in his quest to become Chief of Staff at University Hospital that it would be fun to see his reaction to their current circumstances.  Perhaps he'll help Nancy after her failed romance with Clyde? Because I doubt that DAYS would pair him with Craig.

Glad to see Roark Critchlow back as Mike.  HATE that this is short run.  Mike Horton needs to be back permanently and on the front burner as a legacy character and on contract.  Maybe, Michael T. Weiss would be willing to return on contract.   In related news, DAYS needs to focus more  on the Hortons, put Cady McClain(Jennifer) on contract, bring back Casey Moss as JJ or recast if Moss doesn't want a fulltime return, also bring back Abigail, and some other Hortons, Jeremy (Mike's son), Melissa, Nathan, maybe Marie, Jessica, maybe Nick has a sibling.

It’s mentioned in the interview that he gets to work with Patrika and Kevin but I didn’t mention it since there wasn’t much too it said and I didn’t want to repost the entire interview. Have to give people a reason to buy the magazine after all. Digest might publish the entire interview in the days leading up to his return on their website.

    • Thank u so much! I love that show and the more I see of it the more I want to find more of it even if it’s just in script form. But that house and especially the room looked like Victoria Winters room from dark shadows lol  this was great find! Thanks
    • I genuinely thought when they said she had been throwing up, we were going to get a pregnancy story. I’m actually not convinced we aren’t. Especially the way she and Doug danced around her own infidelity.
    • Shouldn't it be the other way? I don't think Taylor Hayes is playing Rebecca Budig.

    • And the most detailed discussion I've seen from an industry figure about some of JFP's worst choices as a producer (steamrolling over writers) was from another woman, Megan McTavish.
    • IMDb is definitely incorrect, because the final week of episodes in 1974 is uploaded to Youtube in audio form, and Mark and Laurie are there until the very end. The last episode shows Mark going back to the priesthood. I looked at the newspaper and the earliest reference to their house being haunted by Georgina is in December of 1973. This is dated Dec 14, but this same synopsis ran in the papers until the end of December in other publications. So it must have been within those last 3-4 months. I think Stephanie Braxton joined around 1969-1970 so that's probably right. I saw it stated in other newspapers that David Gale joined around September 1972.

    • Opal having siblings could add to the story. However, it raises questions about Tad's adoption. Why were the Martins allowed to adopt him if Tad had aunts or uncles who could have cared for him?  Logic limited the number of possible Gardner's (and whatever Opal's maiden name was).  Even though Linda Thorson would have been a hysterical choice given her British accent.  Especially because SOD often published questions by readers who wondered why Tad and Jenny didn't speak like their mother.   All of which is still not an excuse for Tad's evil doppelgänger Ted.
    • And if I remember correctly, at one point, they were considering having Linda Thorson play Opal's sister.
    • Interesting. Makes me wonder how the day to day looked for Secret Storm at this point in the run. This seems very to deal with the psychological aspect, I guess the "inner storm", and the music is almost sinister. If this is from 1974 there's not much room for dates it could've been from as it ended on February 8th.  It's hard to tell from an edit featuring just one storyline, but if this was the day to day it might've been heavy for the casual viewers.   ETA: Stephanie Braxton is credited to have appeared as Laurie from 1970-1973. David Gale is credited only in 1973 and Alexander Scourby from 1972-1973. I know IMDB isn't always right, but I'd say this is likely 1973 - I'm guessing all these characters exited before 1974 and this might be a part of their final storyline.
    • Well, they were both involved with Ray Gardner.  Then, the actress left in 1980, only to return as a somewhat broader interpretation of the character after Dottie was SORASed.  By that time, Opal had left in 1983.  So, while they serve the same story function,(verbally abusive/neglectful mothers who make you feel sorry for their daughters), one could argue that Edna was the carbon copy.
