As the title says, what major soap change/event would shock you if it happened this year?

  • The Bold and the Beautiful twist still hasn't happened
  • Days of our Lives gets a new head writer
  • General Hospital gets a new executive producer
  • The Young and the Restless gets a new head writer and executive producer
  • All My Children/One Life to Live reboots planned for Hulu
  • PGP licenses As The World Turns/Guiding Light for third-party streaming

Hmmm, you know this thread is going to get speculative juices flowing.

Honestly, ATWT and GL on streaming feels like the least likely of the above, followed closely by or tied with more attempts at the Hulu reboots, albeit the once-teased-now-dormant Pine Valley revival would make new reboots seem less out-of-left-field.

While the soap BTS has been relatively stable in recent years, I don’t think I’d be *shocked* by any regime changes. I’ve already given up on the B&B twist.

I don't think I could be shocked. But, having learned that multiple streaming companies have approached P&G about streaming their classic soaps & P&G has once again said, "No," and "We are no longer in the business of soap operas." then, what the heck, if the headlines tomorrow said they have a deal in place for any of the shows they have in vaults, sure I'd be shocked.

Most that would shock me?

Chandler Massey walking through my front door.

But seriously As The World Turns and Guiding Light going streaming would be the most shocking to me followed by Days firing Carlivati and getting a new HW writer.

As Madonna would say Errol's got a secret!

If someone came out with a “tell-all” exposé of the soap industry (who’s doing what to whom) and named names.

 That would be pretty shocking.

Seriously though, the last two items on that list would indeed shock me the most. The way things ended so badly with the TOLN soaps, I wouldn’t expect many people to sign on, although I know from the reunion livestreams that a few people would still give it another go.

Since PGP/P&G has made absolutely no effort in even showing interest in making episodes available to the public since 2012, that would be pretty darn shocking if they were to make episodes available on some streaming platform, even though their soaps were technically the first to do it via the AOL portal and then the SoapClassics website.

Errol what do you know?

Seriously if PGP licenses As The World Turns/Guiding Light for third-party streaming I would be shocked since it's obvious all these years they were out of the soap business and had no interest in offering their longtime viewers any resolve to canceling their shows. I could see them on Hulu or even Freevee might be a good option if that would ever come true.

And next it would shock me if Josh Grifith got fired as HW from Y&R. I mean I thought by now he would be long gone. But it seems that his EP credit and other things going on BTS that isn't making my dream come true. Though I hope they would promote from within instead of going to someone else.

Something else would shock me if GH finally cast someone to play Lucky, Tommy, or Serena.

These would shock me too, but in a positive way.

B&B needs SOMETHING to shake it up and the writing style needs to change in a major way because the storytelling, characterization and dialogue are not working and haven't in a long time.

I used to think bringing back fan favorites from the good old days would do the trick but after seeing veterans like Kimberlin Brown and Sean Kanan return only to be given ridiculous repetitive dialogue, out of character writing, and poorly paced plots (but doing an amazing job with subpar material), I think that if the writing doesn't improve, nothing else will, regardless of who is in the cast.

    • IIRC, FC reruns aired for awhile on Lifetime, way before the network became the Women in Peril Channel, lol.
    • PAM!! YES!!! You have jogged my memory. She worked at Cedars. She's mentioned in a write-up of Tim's history in the show. It says she was a nurse, but I seem to remember she was a secretary at Cedars, working for either Ed or Sarah. (It's almost 50 years ago, so I definitely could be wrong). I'm certain she was an unwed mother. I recall reading an interview with the actress, Maureen Silliman (I looked it up, that's her correct name, LOL). She started on the show just before the Dobsons started writing it. She was shocked to get a script that said her character had been pregnant since she hit town. I remember a scene where she told Tim she was going to leave SF for a better job for her daughter's sake (really, I think she was upset he was serious about Rita). I don't remember them getting married and leaving town, but according to "Who's Who in Springfield" that's how the characters were written out. Mattson did All My Children for several years, so she might have been persuadable. Here's an interesting factoid I recently learned on these message boards: Elvera Roussel was in the running to play Delia on RH when the show first hit the air. How wild is it that Mattson played Delia for a while? (Though from what I saw of her performance, she was miscast). It's hard to know if Roussel would have been a good Delia. I would think she would have been better suited to playing Faith Coleridge, but who knows? She didn't get to show a whole lot of range as Hope.
    • If I were to do an EON reboot, I think I would start at the beginning, with Mike Karr leaving the police force in order to begin a new career as an attorney, and dealing with his wife, Sara's, crooked family.
    • I don't know if it was the writing or performance but I felt like we finally got to see the real Ted. Especially the way he talked to Martin when confronted, felt like a completely different person. He felt darker and like a total liar who was mad he got caught. I expected him to be remorseful and want to apologize to each and every family member who he came into contact with but he seemed like he didn't care. It completely changed how I view him and it makes me wonder if this is the direction they're going to take Ted in with the recast.
    • Tessa clarified a few years ago that she is gay and not bi.   I find it offensive that the show is teasing her with Daniel. Mariah told Sharon she went emotionally/mentally to a dark place, and while she was out of town on business she got drunk and did something bad.  But Mariah didn't say she cheated.  The show wants us to assume that, but she didn't say that.  She could have taken drugs or who knows what.  All we know is that she feels shame and doesn't want Tessa to know.  Mariah says the inner darkness is due to the longterm influence of Ian in the past, and she hasn't healed from that. With a *good* writer, we could have organic conflict in the Teriah marriage, without cheating.  But JG isn't a good writer.
    • Was that before his accident? I think it was. Most of us have never seen him before it happened.
    • I wonder if Falcon Crest wasn't seen as macho enough for them.  I first saw Dynasty on FX around 1994 or 1995. I think it ran for a few years, although I may be off as I moved and lost the channel for a while.
