Ranking the GOAT SOAP

To me, the best decade for the soaps was the 1970s, with the 1960s and 1950s also strong contenders. It was a mixed bag in the 1980s, with some soaps (ATWT for one) regaining past glory while others (GH, OLTL, TGL) disintegrated for many years during that decade. IMHO, even fewer soaps exhibited much quality during the 1990s, and by 2000, daytime TV was becoming a wasteland. None of the soaps in the past two decades have impressed me. My own GOAT soap, TGL, was atrocious in the 2000s.

If I can take everything into account about the soaps being broadcast since 2000, including their histories from earlier decades, I'd still go with TGL because its total number of quality years is--to me--unsurpassed. Of course, AW was a masterpiece during Agnes Nixon's reign in the 1960s and then again under Harding Lemay from 1971-74-ish, as was Y&R under William J. Bell. We are lucky to have had so many fine nominees tgo choose from!

Along with being consistently well produced throughout its first several decades, storyline and character continuity were first rate. I think this is why many viewers became so attached to the show: they felt like they were watching family, friends and neighbors (same with ATWT). Of course, many great actors paraded through Springfield over the years. Actors were hired for talent and charisma, not because they were hair models.

The most important element that helped TGL shine brightly, however, was the writing. Viewers were treated to years of excellence thanks to material penned by the likes of Irna Phillips, Agnes Nixon, Jane and Ira Avery, Robert Soderberg and Edith Sommer, the Dobsons, Douglas Marland, Pat Falken Smith and Nancy Curlee.

IMHO, the writing tanked for the last 15 years of the series (and from 1983-1984 to about 1988 or so), but that does not negate the decades of high-quality drama that had come before.

    • Isn't that funny how certain memories as young children stick with you through life... Haha I totally get what you mean. That's how I felt with GL in the beginning, but then I got used to it. Seeing so many of my favorite AMC characters on GL was wild - Walker, Irizarry, Dusay, Budig, Aleksander, Gil Rogers, etc.  Ironically, it helps that Irizarry and Dusay played both mother/son in both shows. I know Marcy Walker was wasted on GL as Tangie, but selfishly I'm so glad she was. When she left GL and returned immediately to AMC as Liza Colby, man was it such a great storyline. The Tad/Dixie/Liza triangle was so emotional, tense and memorable. The AMC fans got lucky with that one. WRCW, Tad/Liza working together, the affair, then Jason Sheffield and the shooting on-set... all amazing stuff.   LOL!
    • I remember thinking that he was fantastic after Reva's 1990 "death," with his grief and attempted relationship with Harley. I also remember the cute Marah, not the toothy chick from Halloweentown.
    • Totally agree - we have much to learn about Vernon, and I'd love to see it.
    • I've enjoyed Vernon but I wouldn't be opposed to learning more about his life beyond his political work. What kind of family does he come from? Does he have any siblings? I feel like that could be an interesting thing to look at.
    • GH:       A- DAYS:   A- BTG:     B- B&B:     F Y&R:     F
    • I've always said, Robert Newman does not get enough credit for the popularity of Josh/Reva. Had he stayed in '91, and had years to build other relationships before Kim returned, I'm not sure we'd have been stuck with "always".
    • Bizarrely, while I didn't see it, I distinctly remember my younger sister telling me. We were walking to the store, and at the top of the hill she let out "Roger raped Holly", and I swear I remember it echoing for what seemed like forever. She would've been five at the time.  I know,,,which I find extraordinary. I have toyed with the idea of watching Another World for Maeve, Kathleen Widdoes and Beverlee. But watching Vanessa call Emma Snyder "momma" kinda weirded me out. LOL. I believe that's what I read in the recaps from the time as well. I meant, I couldn't quite believe that the audience wouldn't understand that a woman preparing to go to her engagement party  was raped. I know that on ATWT John raped Kim while they were married, resulting in Andy, but I think they shied away from calling that marital rape.
    • I have my fingers crossed for a baby to be named Monica Michelle & called Monica. And, yes, I do realize that is not equal to having her onscreen but, like you said & of course a recast is unthinkable.
    • I would love to have Monica on screen. Leslie Charleson has died. She played the role for 46 years. Monica should pass as well. No one is going to accept a long-term recast for Monica, no matter how great  the actress they could get.
