I'm in. Season 1 of Just Like That left a bad taste in my mouth. It had nothing to do with the lack of Samantha's presence (although the way they wrote or explained Samantha's absence somewhat bugged me). No, what really irked me was the character of Miranda. She was my favorite back in the day as I could easily relate to her. I hope I get to see a different and likeable Miranda in Season 2.

It’s kind of weird to realize that tonight was the 25th anniversary of the debut of SATC. I am trying to remember what the initial reactions were, not the critics but on the street. I was living in Manhattan at that time but I don’t think that the pilot had generated that much buzz, it was more gradual from what I remember. Looking back now, the pilot felt more gritty though, a bit more NYC as it existed but the fantasy helped draw more people in imo.

I've been rewatching early SATC (am mid-season 2), and am enjoying the mid-90s indie film vibe of the show at that time. It was a bit tougher and grittier but it also showed some of the growing wealth of the city at that time. SATC was always about pecking order and jostling for a better position, but on the romantic frontlines. I also enjoyed the Bad Dating SLs LOL.

I understand why it went the fairytale-ish route. Part of this mirrored the evolution of the city itself, as Manhattan became more moneyed and, dare I say, unaffordable. It was a glamorous city that many aspired to live in and conquer against the odds.

Part of it was also, as the show progressed, our own growing investment in the main cast and their SLs. Hence less standalone episodes and more a continuing soapy story of romantic relationships. IMO, this was a fairly organic evolution.

When SATC debuted, most of Manhattan was already unaffordable, particularly the areas the show was set in, and Times Square, UES, UWS down to Battery Park had already had the grittiness smoothed over.

I agree though, I preferred the initial grittiness of the pilot but I understand why there was a retooling in favor of a fantasy NYC because it would appeal to other parts outside of NYC and the NYC metro area. I also think the criticisms of a whitewashed NYC scrubbed of ethnicity were valid.

Yeah, I remember it being a gradual buzz with people because it was truly a word of mouth (and in the cases of us too young...sneak a peek when the parents weren't around). Under the radar Season 1. A little bit of notice in Season 2. And by Season 3 it was hitting its stride. 

 

I liked its gritty look as well. 

I've been enjoying this,second season, as fairytaleish as it all is. Even Che is more bearable. On the personal front, it's been a tough few months, so having this feather-light escapism has been welcome.

Seema is my favorite character. Also love Charlotte and LTW. And Antony, of course. 

Watched Kim’s cameo. She looked great, still had her Samantha vibe, and got paid a fortune.

SJP really struggled to convey any warmth. You can tell she hated that HBO mandated that cameo.

That reminds me that I've been on the fence about watching. 

 

That said...SJP better hope that the rumors of KC returning pre-writers strike for the following season are untrue then.
