Any storylines altered or dropped because of real world factors?

On Y&R Nikki and Victor's story was altered when Melody became pregnant. There were no plans for Nikki to have a baby at that point, but Bill Bell simply rolled with it and incorporated her real life pregnancy into the story. It would be interesting to know what Bell had planned originally and whether the Bancrofts were added only after Melody became pregnant, or if they were added because of her pregnancy.

In 1985, Another World had started a storyline involving Carl Hutchins stealing an Egyptian treasure with the show's younger couples- Nancy and Chris and Marley and Jake- involved as well.  The show originally planned to film location sequences in Egypt; however, this changed when the Italian cruise ship The Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt on October 7, 1985. An American man in a wheelchair, Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered by the hijackers and thrown overboard. Since the location sequence in Egypt was deemed too dangerous, the show wrote into the storyline that Carl Hutchins had transferred the Egyptian treasure to the Arizona desert and hid it.  The location sequence was filmed in Arizona later in October and aired in November.

If we are including behind-the-scenes events in the "real world factors" that impacted storylines, I imagine the list of pairings that were broken up because of actors dating/breaking up and/or actors intensely disliking each other must be very long - and even longer if we included the feuds and hookups we in the public know nothing about.

And actors' old age/illnesses/deaths.

GH de-aged Edward Quartermaine with John Ingle after David Lewis retired, thus opening up different story possibilities, including the revelation of a past affair with Mary Mae Ward. Her portrayer, Rosalind Cash, was diagnosed with cancer while she was on the show, which I think cemented the growing role of Laura as Earth Mother, which, in turn, I believe started with Genie's pregnancy (scrap the potential action adventure stories).

The losses of Douglass Watson (AW) and Michael Zaslow (GL) impacted their respective shows...and OLTL even wrote the return of David Renaldi to bring Zas back there after he was ill.

Well, I don't know if Missy's backstage stuff changed the story of Jen/Jack/Peter, but the recast certainly killed the momentum.

Also, this is probably not the most egregious case, but you could tell onscreen when NL and TC broke up in real life as Nik and Emily.  The (small) amount of chemistry they had was completely gone lol

    • It definitely flowed beautifully. So much that I was annoyed when Vanessa/Doug because I wanted to get back to the party. I know it was intentional to build up tension and suspense. It worked. lol. I'm glad it was there in hingsight because it gave us that great conversation between Doug and Vanessa. Foreshadowing? And yesss!!! This episode was sooo old school soap giving beat after beat after beat leading up to the unveiling of Eva as Ted's daughter. And we still have plenty of fallout/aftereffects to work through.   Speaking of...Bill, Bill, Bill lol. Good to have confirmation HE was the scary lawyer.   I'm sure I will have a busy Monday, but I can't wait for it. I don't know what I'm looking forward to more. Probably Anita vs Silk Press Sheila tbh. And yes, I feel they will be matching each other 'blow for blow.'
    • And if they go there, it could also be tied to Johnny completely cutting him off, possibly going to work for Titan, etc.
    • @AbcNbc247 maybe it is just that they've gone to that well too often, and I don't like when DAYS goes dark, but I'm OK with EJ abusing drugs, and just skipping the whole sobriety part. Side note: experiencing hallucinations of my son killing me would be enough for me to never want to take a pill again.

    • Part of the reason that Courtney worked at OLTL was because the show had an actual character for her to play.  One that was somewhat different than her character on AW, and after the way she was treated over at AW.. it had to have been nice to be courted onto a new soap that actually valued your contributions.
    • I figured the "long" was already implied

    • The show has finally figured out the correct scene to have at the end of the episode. The one thing I loved about the show today was that we got a pretty decent length scene of Silk Press Sheila at the celebration without any cutaways.  It reminded me of an old school soap opera scene that would run several moments (i.e. Renee's long speech going after the upstanding citizens of Salem on Days in 1983 before her murder).   I think Anita and Silk Press Sheila would be evenly matched.. she would be the one person that Anita would have to work to get the best of.    I do agree that Derek/Ashley were probably cut from the episode.. and maybe their scenes will be used in a different episode.  The scenes that were included (Bill/Hayley and Vanessa/Doug) had something to do with the scenes going on at the party.    Unpopular opinion:  I actually prefer Bill with Hayley.. .they make a good couple.
