Promised Land - New Midseason Drama

While times have definitely changed, it on average takes shows at least two or three seasons to find an audience. And thinking someone will find a show with or without good advertising definitely will take more than two or three episodes. Definitely one. Which was my point.

Using this show for example...I saw an ad for it cuz I watch soaps on my system. And completely forgot about it until we started talking about it regularly here. Hey, it happens. I can only imagine how other casual viewers might feel. Especially now with so many streaming channels now.

The thing is network’s can’t afford to keep shows with such low ratings. They don’t bring in the advertiser revenue to justify the cost of production for these shows. No advertiser wants to pay for ad space on a show that barely anyone is watching (especially one that isn’t resonating with the core demographic they want to reach). It’s a harsh reality, but it’s a business.

Streaming plays by a different set of rules, but again, if not enough people are streaming those shows and the streaming services aren’t driving enough new subscriptions based on those shows, they won’t last long.

Which simply proves that while times have changed, some things remain the same.

Again, like you that's why I said above that I do hope that going onto a streaming service will allow more people to hopefully discover it and hopefully save it. It wouldn't be the first show that moved to streaming and found a wider audience so again...hopeful.

Pretty much. I mean, Netflix went from pretty much renewing everything because they were still starting up to cancelling a bunch of shows within the first few weeks of their debut seasons. Likely the reason why they kept those early shows going was to build up their own content library, but now that they've done so they feel like they can cancel shows that aren't driving subscriptions to their standard.

An interesting aspect that I have been encountering in the copious broadcast reports that have been finding their way to my inbox (most of which I haven't yet read) is that industry executives seem to believe that FAST is the future. FAST stands for Free Ad Supported Television.

Netflix does tend to cancel series relatively quickly these days, compared to the past, when they would take much more time to cultivate an audience for a show. Netflix also has raised subscription fees more than once in the past five or six years. And Netflix is no longer the only game in town. Disney+ is gaining considerable headway, not to mention HBO+ and Paramount+ just had a rebrand in an effort to further boost their visibility. I'm not sure Netflix's strategy of dumping shows will turn out to be such a successful one, because I know for a fact that many creators have begun to bypass them because of their restrictive contracts. Most creators don't want their hard work to go the way of ODAAT, trapped on a streaming service with very limited options for a second life for their series. Yes ODAAT did eventually find an alternative that Netflix found acceptable but the series lost a lot of momentum in the meantime. Nobody who cares about their creations wants that.

Well the last episode is 56 minutes long - at around 41 minutes the screen goes to black and I'm pretty sure it was the original cliffhanger. The last 15 minutes wraps up the show in a nice bow.

It's a shame it didn't catch on, but hey, if you want to watch a 10 episode prime time soap that isn't left with cliffhangers, it's on Hulu right now.

‘That’s exactly what I had been saying.

I finally caught episode 10 on the ABC website, of all places. That’s where I caught each of the episodes, but you have to watch before they get locked down. If the series is canceled, why bother? Why not just leave all the episodes unlocked on the ABC website and put in ad breaks per usual?

    • I do not think I have ever agreed with Vee. Normally I do not read him, Ignore ya know. For some unknown reason I clicked to read. And I agree 1000%. Now, this is so odd that I need to go away for a bit.
    • Justine had a lot of hooey in it, but she was an actual woman, not a guy in drag. She was a doppelganger of Rachel, French, having had a past history with Carl, etc. Two of the more outrageous parts-Justine bricking alive Vicky into a wall & Justine grinding the gears driving a big rig.
    • Hehe, twi/x actually x, formerly Twitter. Typically I find 2 sources for "crazy fan rumors" - the wrong parts of FB and x. Oy.
    • Not to hijack the thread, but was that character Justine? I just found this interview online with Logan and see what you're talking about - wow!   http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/chat85.html
    • My bad….ill fix that  Fixed
    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!
