DAM was a good, but they needed to cut their losses on Eddie..too many times to San Crud. Phillip goes to hell was interesting...and I wish that he had come out of it a bit more dark, but big bads are only good short term. I do think that the end result of his death was that Alan dies,  and Phillip is suddenly the patriarch with Amanda and AM coming back for the funeral and Alex making occasional appearances to referee and make snide comments to one and all. Rick should have dumped his MOL really thinks he is funny but he is not schtick and been the Bauer patriarch and Phillips good angel, Beth matured and able to go to battle with Phillip when needed..etc.

I forgot about the gala..must have been getting ready for the anniversary but then Taggert came in...and yes, Claire disappeared with Taggert and right when Ed came back.  A bit of an edge of Claire being F Buddys with Alan giving both Ed and boring Chelle the fits would have been fun.

Plus, for once, it was played by a good actor who was also physically threatening..not by what he did, but just his size. The lost a good op to bring him back and make him a bit darker..he would still have a relationship with Rick, Harley, etc but it would be constantly strained. And your right, it would be interesting to see someone in a soap's inner circle be a bit off the path..usually its someone, easily shunted aside not one from a core family.

I liked both the OLTL and AMC reboots. They were just a tad ahead of their time. I think if they had appeared streaming 2 to 3 years later it would have worked out better.

I really enjoyed Jack and Nikki's first marriage in the 90s. I thought they had great chemistry. Victor is quite abusive, and I've never seen the appeal.

I often thought a great retcon would be that Jack and Nikki's child survived the miscarriage, but Victor arranged for it to be taken away.

Speaking as someone whose favorite soap is Y&R, I have no idea how the show remained number one in the 2000s and 2010s storyline wise. I think OLTL and GH delivered far more thrilling plots (despite their issues) during that time.

Why Y&R is so highly reguarded though is their lavish production value, awesome directing and great classical scores in the 80s and 90s. I haven't seen any other daytime show top them presentation wise, with B&B being a close second.

I will ride Y&R through and through because it is the OG for me and all. And the potential is still there. But it has been by far (for me at least) the worst soap of the four-soap era (the 2010s) overall. There have been moments of awfulness with the others but Y&R has consistently been mediocre to awful throughout whereas there have been great fun moments on the others to balance the bad ones.
Y&R benefits from an undeniable nostalgia because it really went as high as a soap can get quality-wise, from an older more loyal audience and favorable timeslots. But yeah it has coasted on that and is consistently the least enjoyable soap in recent times.

    • @alwaysAMC Great mini-review as always.  That Gilly story is...certainly one I could not forget... I imagine a number of viewers were shocked with the temporary recast. It was revealed in the soap magazines, as was the news about Frank Beaty's breakdown, I think. I think Wolf had some statements or an interview at the time but very little. I wish someone could interview him. He did a good job under extremely tough circumstances.  For some reason I have a vague memory of him in the Marian getup but that's probably not right.  I'm glad you have appreciated the material with Susan after a shaky start. I always enjoyed her, and she was the only love interest I liked Nick with.

    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJJTEW8J5EA/ 1989 Daytime Emmys Victoria Wyndham gives moving tribute to Douglas Watson, AW's Mac Cory Harding "Pete" Lemay created the character Mac Cory & then Doug Watson played him for 15 years. When Doug died on May 1st, 1989, it was a huge loss to the show, the other actors & also to the fans.

    • Jonathan Kellerman is definitely the most EON/Slesar-like writer in the business right now.  Unfortunately, he's almost 80 years old.  Interestingly, he has a son (Jesse Kellerman) who's about 45, who's been studying under him.  I believe what makes the Kellermans such effective mystery & crime writers is their background in psychology.
    • I never understood the point of Marchetti. Summer left the show for a job there in Italy. OK. When she returned they had Jack buy the company. Why couldn't Summer have returned and simply stated it was not a good fit, she missed her home , family/friends etc It was absurd that this internationally successful fashion empire could just be bought by a US cosmetics firm at the drop of a hat. What was the point when they never did anything with it at all? Summer simply could have gone to work at Jabot. And wasn't there some nonsense about an offshhoot called Marchetti Home? Was Phyllis attached to that at some point? This show...

    • Haven't seen today's ep yet but so will be interested to see the clothes. So far I think they have been very character specific (even if I don't like some of them eg Kat's cutsie style) Anita is very showy/glittery, Nicole classic elegance, Dani sexy/bold colors etc. Unlike Y&R which seems much more generic. Also BTG pays attention to the men's wardrobe and has developed a style for the boyz-which is harder to do with male fashion. The absence of any of Derek/Ashley at any of these big events again demonstrates how they are in a different universe to the rest of the show. Not that a nurse and a fireman would be there but still they seem destined at this point to stay in their own lane and have little interaction with the core of the show.
    • Agnes had written for Bernard Grant for many years on TGL as well as Ernest Graves and Joe Gallison,Doris Belack,Robert Milli, and  Antony Ponzini at AW. So she would probably gravitate to writing a role with an actor in mind or choosing someone she had written for before who she knew could deliver.
