Iconic female friendships on soaps

 TPTB could have brought back most in the late 90s/early 00s, especially seeing as not much else was going on then (not much that wasn't totally contrived, that is. In the show's last decade, it would have given Lisa something to do.

Though it was strange to me with all the crap with Sami, I loved Marlena and Kate’s friendship.

It sure was interesting! I think it crashed and burned though after EJ’s shooting when the two had a big argument in front of Roman when they were accusing each other of shooting EJ.

Will do! It’s been a while since I have seen it myself but I remember first watching it during one of those SoapNet weekend  marathons and then it just standing out.  Mainly thanks to Koslow’s raw emotion & desperation and in the aftermath of the argument the poignant scene of Marlena telling Roman no special treatment,  put her in cuffs and take her down to the station for formal questioning.

It's a funny thing about Hope and Jennifer, they were often given dialogue about being cousins, but it is difficult to recall scenes that demonstrated their friendship.  For example, I don't recall Jen helping Hope when she got addicted to sleeping pills (aka nighttime Hope), or Hope intervening when Jen began drink too much.  When they were single each would warn the other about potential bad boyfriends.  However, it is a shame that they were never given a story where they solved a mystery together, or saved each other from harm, or teamed up against a villain.  Jennifer and Carly had that type of friendship, but she and Hope were really a missed opportunity.

Post Nighttime Hope, Jennifer (who'd been away for several years except for a brief appearance at Alice's funeral) returned to Salem and reached out to Hope who was incarcerated. Jennifer even got herself a job at the prison after Hope tipped her off about an organ trafficking scheme being operated out of the prison. But that was probably the only time they were involved in a mystery together.

From what I recall in the 80s... Jennifer/Melissa were closer....same with Hope/Melissa

Well, during Missy’s 2000-2006 run, I’d wager if Jennifer or Hope weren’t in scenes with one of their direct story partners, they were in scenes together.  They interacted CONSTANTLY during those years, always supporting each other.  It was jarring that they didn’t interact as much in the past 10 years.  (I blame block taping and what obviously became Missy’s lack of availability.). But when they did, they always made it count.  I think their relationship is one of the cornerstones of the show.
