2020: The Directors and Writers Thread

Janice Ferri Esser was credited for the episode with "cool your jets," (April 7 episode) and she's considered the best Y&R SW.  It goes to show you that sometimes the best can have their clunkers.  We also have to remember that the script goes to the script editor, and then the HW (and maybe EPs and network execs too), and then to the actor (who could've changed the lines), so sometimes it's possible that the person credited with the script did not write a particular line.

This is shocking to me. I wonder how widespread this is as shows continue to be unable to resume for so long. It amazes me networks keep picking up and announcing new shows and casting when they have no way of knowing when they can film. I also feel like by doing this, that means they must expect this to last longer than some fans are anticipating.

My goodness, that is rough.

Slightly ugly question, this, but given the nature of Furlough and the financial hit that just about everything will take, what are the chances that a few of the writers won’t have jobs to come back to?

My mind initially went to any of the other writers under Griffith, but at this stage, I don’t trust a considered and wise choice would be made to cover the positions of Griffith/Morina, whether a ‘cost effective’ hire is made or promotions from within.

Or how about ‘talent sharing’ under the Sony banner, ie Albert Alarr or Greg Meng from Days Of Our Lives (for example).

*It’s probably not necessary for me to say so, but none of the above ‘flight of fantasy’ is steeped in any knowledge or fact.

I make you right. James Harmon Brown has experience of Head Writing, even if it was roughly 20 years ago (and his writing partner is no longer with us). Sara Bibel is an interesting case. I don’t know if she has no interest or is not trusted but I never really get the impression she’s ever all that close to being a Head Writer, even if she has history with the show. Amanda Beall used to write scripts that were vastly at odds with Y&R as we knew, and seemingly at the start of Maria Arena Bell’s fascination with all that was ABC Daytime.

Of course, we are in the unknown, and I was just putting some stuff out there. Most likely outcome is nothing will change as a result of the current situation, minus a few tweaks and adjustments to fix the timeline.

Is anyone really surprised by this? These shows have such small profits that the owners are not going to pay folks to sit around doing nothing. I’m sure everyone under contract, writers, directors, actors have all been furloughed and/or their contracts terminated so that they don’t have to be paid.

Y&R also has the largest number of FICORE writers on staff and the pending strike has been delayed with the contract extension through 30 June, I believe.  The ficore writers are Griffith, Harmon Brown and Conforti.  I've though all along they brought in Harmon Brown to help write the show if a long strike ensued.  He's also friends with Steven Kent.

    • Shari Anderson was also head writer for a few months before the strike began.
    • I would agree.  Does anyone ever notice in Jan 1988/even Dec 1987, the show started to refer to characters from the past and mainly the Frame family?   It sounded like Lemay talk.  Jason Frame mentioned his sister Sharlene in early 88 but the ending credits still listed MD has head writer and I think Lemay was about to take over at that point.  The show hired Lemay back I believe to prepare for the 25th anniversary and try to recapture the audience that was lost by bringing the past back up.  Then the writers strike happened and all of a sudden the writing changed except when Sharlene Frame came back and we heard more family chatter again.  Maybe at this time they knew the strike was coming near to an end the producer forced the scab writing team to introduce Sharlene. I suspect even though Lemay was not writing at the time, the intent was he is coming back and the show consulted with him on his future storylines.
    • -- My Laugh of the Day goes to Carly calling the Metro Court a "five-star hotel." -- It's crazy, but what Drew did to Wiley makes Drew come off worse than if he actually murdered someone. -- Cynthia Wattros really needs to lay off the Botox. Because her face doesn't move, she's doing WAY too much with her eyes. -- Josh Kelly is looking so good with the new haircut. -- Rory Gibson continues to impress as nuMichael. Just another reminder that Josh Griffith doesn't know how to write for talent. -- This Lucky goodbye is sad -- in all the wrong ways. It could not be more pathetic. There's no doubt in my mind that Valentini told the writers they had 3 days to write him out and to make it ugly. No one will miss JJ.

      We all have our picks
    • Teach me to post cocky about all these rampant relations! As for the cut, it just made Leo Howard look more stunningly handsome. There are guys I think are hotter, but he's got the prettiest face hands down.
    • Yes Arianna and Sami are blood related through Sami and Theresa. They are also adoptive/honorary related because Arianna's third.parent is Sonny, which makes Arianna and Tate related through Justin and Isabella.
    • I saw more about Biden Old or the staged feud between Elon and Trump or just the usual distractions, but I will admit I don't stomach most of the news anyway.
    • Figured it was something like that. It's just feels weird that Will came back to see John but he's not gonna be at his funeral but

They are blood related. Through Sami and Theresa. I didn't notice it last week, but it looked so fresh today. Like he got cut minutes before they started filming or something lol
    • Bill convinced the Governor to pardon Luna. Steffy was too busy badmouthing Hope & Brooke for most of the Spring to concern herself with such trivial matters.
