I stayed in love with Rose. Loved Scott Holroyd. Hated that they had that great umbrella story planned & scrapped it. Byrne hated it, too.

What is the scrapped storyline you are talking about?

@Khan, you don't even know what their relationship was like.  Who are you to say he wasn't good to her?  I just found that kind of disrespectful.

I wasn't talking about their personal relationship, @Toups.  I'm sure Sheffer was wonderful to a great many people in his life and career.  Most everyone who had worked under him has attested to that fact.

As a head writer and storyteller, however, his writing for Barbara was ABOMINABLE.  He literally took one of my all-time favorite characters in daytime and turned her into an irredeemable monster whom I wanted off ATWT like yesterday.

It was Sheffer that had Barbara jumping out of a window in court, right?

No, I think that was Passanante (although I could be wrong, and probably am).  Believe me, though, the damage had long been done by that point.

Barbara fell into one of two categories Sheffer generally wrote for female characters - either crazy or totally dependent or defined by a man (sometimes both).

Exactly.

Again, as engaging as Sheffer was with everyone, the man simply had no business BEING in this business.

Yes, that was during Sheffer and Jean Passanante's time as head writers (2004).

Thanks, @Franko.  I hadn't read your post yet when I answered Chit's.

Going by Tommy's Eulogy he was really a giving, generous man.

@Khan, well, what do you get that from? Characterizations? Plots? Uneven/even?

Colleen Zenk was, alongside Nancy Lee Grahn, Lauren Koslow, HBS, Zimmer, and Susan Flannery, was one of the few actresses born before 1960 who got a platform in the aughts. It’s no wonder she feels eternally grateful for the showcase, even if she played a gargoyle.

You don't count Crystal Chappell?

She’s born in 1965. I thought about her too. There are other older actresses who got story as well (Jeanne Cooper, Slezak), but it was a dwindling number.

Okay, just so there's an explanation for Crystal not being on a list! LOL

Give me a bit & I'll remember what it's important to tell about it. And, Hi, By the way. Long time no see.

I noticed in the clip where Hoagie was accepting the Emmy that when he thanked Goutman, Marcia McCabe was with him & gave him a big hug & kiss, so they had not split up yet at that time.

@victoria foxtonIt's a mixed bag to me, too, mostly according to who was writing with him at the time.

@oakdalelover Yes, he died too young, but we have had plenty who did - Ted Corday @ 58, Zas @ 56, Marland @ 57, Reilly @ 60, Anthony Addabo @ 56, Larkin Molloy @ 62, and Carrie Fisher @ 50, so we add Sheffer @ 61.

More who died too young: Whitney Houston @ 49, Shell Kepler @ 50, Kathleen Layman @ 65, Taylor Negron @ 58, Nathaniel Marston @ 40, ... I am going to find more.

The umbrella storyline they were going to do was going to be much longer. I don't remember who was responsible for scrapping it & changing Rose's death so drastically. Could have been network interference, could have been Goutman, could have been HW. I think you can ferret out a whole bunch about it from this Usenet newsgroup link, RATSc etc.

Alright.  LOL  Yeah, I totally misinterpreted your post. My bad. :)    As for the writing of Barbara, maybe Colleen just enjoyed playing a darker role and that's why she loved him/the writing.

I think Colleen and many others, across the board, enjoyed the airtime.

I agree. I remember when Martha first began to use her native New Jersey tongue & I truly thought that "Holden" was gonna bust a gut!
