The soap opera writers' discussion

Joseph Gallison appeared on Where the Heart Is after he had left One Life to Live.

I have also read that Where the Heart Is wanted Carol Roux to play a role on the show.    I suspect that the producers and writers wanted to pair them romantically again.   Ms. Roux declined the role, and she later returned as Missy, on Another World-Somerset this time.

As far as I can see, she never acted again (at least in TV or film) after she left Somerset. I would love to see her work as Missy on AW, which I'm sure was wiped long ago. I think the only show I've ever actually seen her in was Bonanza, when she did a guest spot in 1970.

A few years ago Roux did a short film that was available on youtube, but for the life of me I cannot recall the title.

You can see her as Missy in the 1968 wedding of Lenore and Walter, which is still up on YT.

Carol Roux came from an interesting background. She grew up in foster homes, had a long-distance romance for a time with musician Rick Coonce of the Grass Roots, owned a cat she named Missy after her AW character, and married and divorced a professional dancer.

I read in a "where are they now" column from 1978 that a fellow actor from Somerset (who was not mentioned by name) acknowledged that Ms. Roux was a good actress but caused trouble on the set, supposedly because she couldn't cope with the schedule. "Every day, Carol would come up with some real or imaginary illness and create problems." I wonder if she was bipolar. From reading her interviews, she seemed like a sweet girl who wouldn't set out to do things like hold up production out of malice. But who knows?

I watched the clips of Another World above.   I have some comments and questions:

Comment #1:  That was the first time that I had ever seen Audra Lindley as Liz Matthews and Barbara Rodell as Lee Randelph.

Comment #2:  I think that Barbara Rodell has grown prettier as she has gotten older.    I was not overwhelmed by her beauty here or when she was playing Jill #2 on Somerset.

Question #1:  Who was the actor playing the minister?   At first, I thought that he looked like Peter Brandon, but I knew that he was not.   I also think that it may have been actor William Daniels.

Question #2:  I did not see Jim Matthews there.  I may have missed him.   Was this between actors in the role of Jim?

Question #3:  Who gave away the bride?   I heard a man say that she was being given "by her mother and I," but I do not know who the man was.

Comment #3:   Wasn't Judith Barcroft a beautiful and graceful actress?   I saw her in the magazines during this time, but my first real time in seeing her was during the final weeks of A World Apart when she was announcing that she was coming to All My Children play Ann Tyler St. Cyr on commercials for All My Children)..

Comment #4:  Who was writing the show when Walter was written off the show?  Was it Agnes Nixon, Robert Cenedella, or Harding Lemay?

Comment #5:  These episodes had so many performers who had previously appeared on The Edge of Night:  Constance Ford, Audra Lindley, Ann Wedgeworth, Val Dufour, and Sam Groom.

Fred Douglas, an attorney who married Susan Matthews, gave away Lenore at this wedding.

Shepperd Strudwick was playing Jim Matthews in 1968, but was absent during the filming of this wedding. (Hugh Marlowe did not take over the role of the Matthews patriarch until 1969.)

As far as I know, Barbara Rodell never played Jill Grant # 2 on Somerset. There was only one actress to play Jill: Susan MacDonald.

Here is Rodell's American Talent Management resume:

Harding Lemay was writing AW when Walter Curtin was killed off. Lemay felt that Walter had been written into a corner, and as a murderer who had let his pregnant wife spent time in jail (during Christmas, no less), was no longer a viable romantic lead.

Yes, Rodell played Jill Stevens Clayborn on TSS, from 1969 to 1970. She was the third actress to play the role, following Irene Bundle in 1968 and Audrey Johnstone from 1968 to 1969.

And yes, Susan MacDonald (which is how her name is correctly spelled) was indeed the only actress to play Jill on Somerset.

If only more eps of these vintage soaps survived! TSS really deteriorated in its final years, and Somerset always varied in terms of quality (mainly thanks to who was writing it at the time), but I'd watch either one of these soaps over the dreck we are forced to endure today.

    • Phillip/Harley made more sense as friends (as they were portrayed to be during the Pam Long era).. and I could even buy them being a short-term couple.. but end game they were not. Didn't GA say he thought it out of character that he would choose Harley over Beth.. or that he would leave Beth/Lizzie back in AZ in order for him to chase a vendetta?  I know that when Beth Chamberlain came back as Beth in late 1997, she was told instantly that the writing would be slanted toward Phillip/Harley.. which surprised her as well. When the Lorelei story came up, it actually made all of her out there/out of character behavior Beth displayed from 1997/1998 through the early/mid 00s make sense.  I liked that the final months of the show, Beth became more like Beth of old so at least the show ended on a positive for her character.
    • I think it was Most Irresistible Couple. I'm pretty sure ATWT's Jack and Carly were up for it to, and I felt gypped that they lost.
    • To each his own, but I am lovin' the Duprees.   Doesn't mean the show is perfect, but the Duprees are not the problem.
    • While Daphne D, Trisha MG, and Ambyr M are definitely in the running for an Emmy nom next year,  Brandon Claybon actually impressed me a lot too! It's just a shame we rarely see Martin and Ted in scenes together, which would have made everything more impactful!
    • I remember this funny bit with Donna in 1989 or 1990 where Michael had asked Donna why she didn't have a female friend and/or really any friends.  I laughed when he mentioned how she was close to Iris, but backtracked by saying 'ok that was my fault' when she gave him the looks that could kill look. I remember there was a bit where Donna then tried to befriend Rachel and I believe Felicia in separate scenes with the two both looking at Donna in bewilderment.  It didn't seem to work. After Felicia and Lucas married, I do remember a few scenes between Felicia and Iris where they were being nice yet throwing subtle shade at one another.  Then Donna would come into the scene and then it seemed as though Iris and Felicia would both focus on their annoyance at Donna.  I do recall Felicia did get silo'd into her own orbit at times... and that Lorna and Jenna had more interactions with other characters outside that orbit.. moreso than Felicia. I think the isolation of  Donna/Rachel/Felicia became more pronounced/obvious once Iris was written off the show and JFP came into the EP position in 1995.   Even after JFP departed.. the isolation of characters into bubbles continued until the last few months of the show when Amanda started interacting with Cindy, Paulina resumed interacting with Rachel/Amanda, Vicky/Lila began sparring again after being in separate orbits for over a year, etc.
    • Only falling or tripping dreams for me...
    • I think with the Silk Press Sheila/Eva/Ted/Nicole situation fully out and in the open (for the most part)... I have some predictions for May/June: Kat/Eva/Tomas:  With the revelation that her father, who she held up as a hero, is not as perfect as he's presented himself to be.. I see Kat focusing her energy on supporting her mother and pushes Tomas away (she had mentioned to Vernon about how Tomas had asked her to step in and talk Naomi into dropping the lawsuit and how she didn't feel comfortable with that).   With Tomas pushed away from Kat.. he become the one individual that is nice to Eva and also feels a bit of guilt since his telling of what she confided in him to Kat ended up being the spark that made Kat resume investigating Eva.   Eva will also go to Tomas for comfort... and that will cause even more conflict/issues between herself and Kat. Nicole/Ted:  As we've seen for the last 2+ months... Nicole is not anything like Dani and her response to Silk Press' bombshells proves that.  Even if she opts not to file for divorce.. I predict a messy War of the Roses type of situation.   Although she kind of bought this on herself with the bottom bit of trust she had for Eva irregardless of the fact that she came recommended by Mona. Martin:  I have a feeling that his memories of the being Silk Press Sheila's little brownie friend will also revive the nightmares full stop.. and May will have this be the A story with Smitty and kids affected by this secret of his from the past.  If found out.. will Smitty leave him, or will Smitty continue his unhealthy devotion to Martin (and it is unhealthy).   And also, I hope we get some more focus/development on the Joey/Vanessa/Doug situation.. and also connect the threads of that threesomes to Jacob/Jacob's partner/Jacob's dad thread... and also get to see who else Joey starts to set his sights on (perhaps a Dupree.. since they're vulnerable right now). My wishlist for May/June for the B and C stories: Naomi/Jacob:  Cute couple.. but why are they together.  As the late Agnes Nixon would ask if she view them .. why are they together?  What is it about Naomi and Jacob's pasts pre marriage has led the two to find one another and get married?  Naomi seems a control freak... as a way to not be like her 'weak' mother Dani so she calls the shots?  What draws Jacob to Naomi?  Is it her sense of justice and passion?  Is it the Dupree last name?  Ashley/Derek:  The last time she was on, we finally got a bit of personality from her that isn't so perfect.  She's high strung/anal about her surroundings and her life.  Is she like this because she was a latchkey kid due to her single mother working all the time?  Is she only with Derek because he's 'simple' and 'uncomplicated'.. someone she thinks won't try to upset her routines?  As I say... I don't know if the writers/producers have the 'why' figured out for these two.. and if they can figure that out.. story can generate from that.
    • It's not the worst idea lol.  Emma deserves much better than Joss though.
    • Robert Newman gets the short end of the stick, as Josh is usually stuck being an [!@#$%^&*] until the chick he's with goes cray-cray and Reva becomes the better alternative.  Reva was also married to Josh's brother Billy. You said it better than I did.  While I didn't know Brandon had died on-screen previous to this, it was just odd that they'd made such a huge deal about him already being dead the summer before, yet now he's just hanging around in white linen in the islands, not giving a fig about his family and friends. To me, Brandon was always the spectre hanging over the family that explained their lack of conscience.  Long at times used history very well--or at least knew how to mine it for story effectively. The Fishing Trip and Dylan are probably the best examples of that. I don't think she came up with Dinah, but I could be wrong.
