If anything from Joker gets major nominations I am not watching this year's ceremony. I am sick to death of this disgusting film and how much the director of it is manipulating people into seeing him as a victim and a martyr of "woke" society and how noble and precious he is for somehow conning comic book fans into seeing a "real movie."

I think if the film performs, and it looks like it will, Joaquin at least will be hard for the Academy to resist.

I'm sure you're right, but it's just such garbage. Not that that's anything new - look at all the Green Book winners (aside from Mahershala Ali) - but a movie that is basically a vigilante call to arms, complete with a desperate campaign dripped in the persecution complex of these men - it deserves nothing but contempt, and the same goes for everyone involved.

I've read about scenes in the film.

There was a news story on last night's news that security is being 'beefed up' at many theaters that are screening Joker because some authorities fear the threat of mass shootings and violence. I don't plan on seeing the movie but part of me wonders how this could affect turnout.

You should watch it and decide for yourself instead of reading what others are saying.

I saw the movie and thought it wasn't as good as I hoped.  Joaquin was phenomenal and I hope he wins the Oscar.   These aren't story spoilers but I'll tag them anyway.....they're just general comments but I'll play it safe:

I'm disappointed that there wasn't enough of Joaquin as full on Joker because he was excellent - I hope there's sequel so we get to see that.  I also thought the outrage over the violence was overblown.  You see more violent stuff on HBO shows or gun movies like Shoot Em Up or Smoking Aces. There were only just two really violent scenes that come to mind.   With the character of the Joker, there needs to be some humour and there wasn't really any.

That was an interesting read. Opinions definitely vary a lot regarding this movie.

Whether it will be rewarded by the AMPAS or not is a different matter. The Academy usually tend to go for the "safer" option when it comes to Best picture. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but off the top of my head I can only think of "The Silence of the Lambs" beating "Bugsy", "JFK", "The Prince of Tides" and "Beauty and the Beast" as an example of when the more controversial choice came out on top.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think there's a new Judy Garland biopic every year?  How many times do we need to rehash Judy, her (gay) husbands and her many, many pills?
