As a huge fan of this film that I am proud to have sat through in theaters, I'm thrilled to see "Jeanne Dielman" trending on Twitter:

If you check it out, be forewarned: It is largely static, silent shots of its title character going about her life and daily routine for hours, slowly teasing out slow details and mild changes that build to a shocking climax.

For the first time in years, the battle for Best Actor is the one that is of the most interest to me. Essentially, in my mind anyway, it could potentially be Colin Farrell vs. Brendan Fraser and I don't know who I'm rooting for more. Colin has evolved beautifully as an actor from his initial bad boy image and the pictures/projects he's chosen the last few years have been smart, creative, and fascinating. However, I have seen Banshees, and though I loved the previous effort those same parties put together with In Bruges, Banshees left a lot to be desired for me as a whole. So maybe I'm just rooting for him to get one of those career Oscars at this point. Then there is Brendan Fraser, who has come through the [!@#$%^&*] that Hollywood can throw at you to make a triumphant comeback with a performance of a lifetime. If this awards season continues to build both of them up concurrently, my eyes will certainly be on the Best Actor prize come Oscar night.

I feel like it’s inevitable with the growing number of actors who identify as non-binary (where do you put them?) and where the winds are blowing culturally. It’s becoming less and less acceptable for these institutions to maintain their old ways of doing business, especially when ideas of gender are being questioned and reconsidered on a wider societal level.

And the Academy might follow in BAFTA’s footsteps with interventions to project a more inclusive image (e.g. a committee that selects some of the nominees, ensuring gender parity). I find those interventions to be questionable (these industries can get away with not actually doing the work behind the scenes to create tangible diversity while tooting their horns about their “inclusive” nominees year after year. Plus, would those nominees really representative of how the Academy feels? They should be. I also find it sorta condescending to actors/craftspeople in marginalized communities).

That is very true. Sad that diversity only becomes valuable when these institutions start crumbling. Expecting people of color to shore them up and walk away with crumbs after their mostly white male predecessors already made sh*t loads of money and prestige when these institutions actually mattered.

    • I grew up in a neighborhood behind the gates and it really wasn't uncommon to have your house unlocked. In my neighborhood there was an armed gate before you enter the neighborhood and you have security patrolling 24/7. One thing that was common when I was in high school were for the kids whose parents were real estate agents to use their houses to throw house parties. It was easy because they were always unlocked.

    • I posted this a few weeks ago but it's worth popping up again as Grant does get asked about return rumors, that Paul Rauch had tried to get the show revived for years but P&G just would not sell it.

    • If those two crazy (and I do mean crazy!) kids can't make it, where's the hope for the rest of us?!

    •   Sonia was on the director rotation at DAYS. On BTG, Sonia had been credited as a producer.  May 23 was her first episode directing BTG.
    • And Kim Zimmer also gave interviews where she admitted to some of her behavior and she apologized for it. I give her credit for admitting her wrongdoing and taking responsibility because other actresses would not have done that.  BTW, I will miss John Payne from your avatar.

JFP's GL post-1993 may have needed Kim Zimmer to try to salvage the mess that was made of the show (and that turned out to be another disaster), but GL post Zimmer's departure was fantastic. Forbes showed GL didn't need Zimmer as well. I also think Santa Barbara didn't help her ego either since Sydney Penny got the attention, and most SB viewers loathed Zimmer's Jodie character. To be fair, I think a big part of the problem was the writing and the producing, but since Zimmer thinks Rauch is such a genius, that's on her.
    • Forbes also likely got the primetime career Zimmer wanted - never a huge star, admittedly, but a stalwart, able to dip in and out when she saw fit and generally not paying an industry price. Zimmer felt extremely hurt by her lack of success after leaving GL and even more hurt when JFP made it clear GL had moved on from Reva. (JFP, self-sabotaging as ever, soon made it clear that was not actually the case, but with a stronger producer, GL could have genuinely moved on from Reva) That's interesting. I suppose that's what they always say, and there was some precedent as Passions had moved to Direct TV. I guess Passions being canned so fast (faster than many expected, I think) put a big nail in the coffin. And we haven't had any revivals or moves since that have worked, even though Neighbours came close.  I'll try to find that promo.
    • Oh wow - I must see this promo!  Anyone have a copy/link to it? I can't believe they 'accidentally' did that, and if so, I wonder if someone got in trouble haha. Kim did mention in Chapter 1 that the 'suits' dangled some hopeful carrots for a long time, saying they would pitch the show and try and get it on another network or online somehow where it would be cheaper. They even heard rumors that Lifetime would pick it up, so it gave some folks hope for a little while, but sadly nothing came of it. Kim said she was already resolved that it would never go anywhere and she had peace of mind about that shortly after the announcement.
    • Same. I absolutely agree. It's a real shame, too. I had a lot of hope for the Character.
