The EW ratings article had some interesting tidbits:

  • According to ABC, this is the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network in nearly four years (since a premiere episode of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory from 2014)
  • Also kinda incredible, given how ratings have declined over the years: Roseanne’s return was actually higher among total viewers than its 1997 finale 21 years ago!
  • The Roseanne premiere audience also grew slightly from its first quarter to its second, which is a good sign

  • This is Tuesday’s highest-rated entertainment telecast in six years among young adults and ABC’s best results in the time slot since 2006

The show either had new viewers watching or more of the older viewers returned for the reboot than for the finale. And I was worried the show would drop the second half hour. Glad it gained in viewers.

O.M.G.

YES!

Perfect comparison!

Ames is a great, great find.

The actress playing Harris seems fine but hasn't had a lot to do yet, which is also fine. (I've not watched Shameless so I have no idea how she is but she seems perfectly cast and talented)

So, my thoughts on ep 1:

As critics say the pilot is definitely creaky - especially Roseanne, who hasn't had to act in a long time and it shows. And the Barney Fife is turned way up on Jackie, which I didn't care for but which Laurie Metcalf always enjoys. The gaslighting accusation Jackie made was smart though, and has roots in the old show. I thought the treatment of the issue was soft, but realistically I'm not sure how much they could do without getting really ugly and turning people all the way off. So if they want to move on with a more progressive show in spite of Roseanne's complicated politics, so be it.

The whole Becky thing comes in out of nowhere but whatever, it's a pilot. I did find it interesting the live audience clearly is cheering for Jackie and booing a lot of Roseanne's Trump lines. The cast, old and new, is what works. I did like the commentary on Roseanne's failed book/Season 9.

That's BS about Becky not finishing high school though - I could swear she did. The Becky stuff could easily have been (non-)written for Sarah Chalke, which I didn't like. I hope it improves.

Darlene is softer and a bit more matured but she still has some great lines. She isn't a vicious caricature but she still has some edge. But when she started breaking down talking about having to come home, that got me. They never let Sara do that much on the old show - show that much open vulnerability - and she proved she's still an actual actress. To be the heart of the new show Darlene has to have one, and she does here more than ever because she's grown up.

I'm pretty sure Becky finished high school too. That was an odd line I thought.

I didn't find Jackie's Barney Fife impression as bad as it was towards the end of the show. But yeah a lot of it was there. I thought it was toned down some and some moments worked well. But I'll see how they handle it going forward. I don't want her to be a caricature like she became. I do like the gag of her life coach career. She's always amplified herself in her job and been over the top about it.

Yes, that was definitely very Jackie to pump up her latest job.

I did like the tender bit with Darlene and Harris worrying about Mark - I was glad Harris isn't all edge. That gets old, it got older in the later years of the old show.

Roseanne had her best moment in a creaky beginning of the season with the kid playing Mark - them cuddling and him taunting her reminded me of how she and Michael Fishman used to interact at that age.

That is Darlene's old teacher from the early seasons at Mark's school! Wow. And the scene with him and Darlene at the end was great. The beat Sara Gilbert took controlling her emotions before she told him kids would play with him really got me. She's so good here. And Ames McNamara is preternaturally good. I liked Dan hugging him and playing ball with him.

Reserving judgment on the Becky story until it moves beyond one note. Lecy does still have the comic timing as Becky ranted about having a dentist who doesn't work out of a van.

    • Very. They're building up his story again and picking the perfect time to do so. As the SilkPress storyline climaxes and go off in several great directions, they are building up that story to take a turn.

    • @Soapsuds Thanks for posting Night by night Mon 8pm The Rookies edged Gunsmoke but attracted younger(more desirable) viewers.NBC failed with Born Free/Smothers Brothers (how many different series did those 2 get??) 9-11pm  Maude/Rhoda/Medical Center dominated on CBS,but Football and Movies were competitive on an occasional basis. ABC tried  SWAT/Caribe later in the season and the former worked for them. Tues 8-11 pm CBS all the way Good Times, MASH, Hawaii Five O,Barnaby Jones. NBC had the fading Adam 12,Movie and Police Story mmm...don't see that listed? ABC Happy Days, which ABC decided to keep despite lackluster ratings, the Movie of the Week and Marcus Welby-once pulling big numbers but no longer. 8pm NBC had a new hit with Little House, easily beating Sons and Daughters, which was axed and replaced with Tony Orlando, which did much better. ABC had That's My Mama and the Wed movie. 9pm Cannon was the lead here as Lucas Tanner failed to capitalize on the LHOTP leadin. ABC continued the movie. 10pm Manhunter started strong for CBS but petered out and was cancelled. Petrocelli manged to beat Get Christie Love, which was replaced by Baretta-no ratings winner but ABC decided to renew. Thurs Another CBS night with The Waltons and a movie. ABC counterprogrammed with Odd Couple/Paper Moon then Barney Miller/Karen NBC did even worse with Sierra and replaced it with Mac Davis which improved ratings quite a bit. However, it was moved to 9pm for Sunshine/Bob Crane 9pm Some good numbers for ABC with Streets of San Francisco fending off Ironside,Archer and Mac Davis. 10pm Harry O had a slim victory over Movin On Fri 8-11 NBCs best night Sanford/Chico/Rockford/Police Woman. 8pm CBS had high hopes for Planet of the Apes but it bombed. Replacement Khan did even worse. Paul Sand and We'll Get By were tossed in at the end of the season. With poor lead ins the Friday movie didn't deliver. ABC's odd line up saw Kodiak flop, Six Million dollar Man struggle and Texas Wheelers  quickly cancelled. Kung Fu was brought in @8 and Six Million moved to 9. Then Kolchak took over at 8 and Hot*l Baltimore/Odd Couple 9-10. Despite controversy Hot*l flopped. 10pm ABC tried Kolchak then Baretta and finally Get Christie Love Sat CBS lead  with #1 AITF then Paul Sand/MTM/Bob Newhart/Carol Burnett. Paul Sand lost too much of the lead in so CBS spun off The Jeffersons and it was a smash. NBC did OK with Emergency (which beat Paul Sand on occasion, thus hastening that show's demise) and a movie. ABC was a disaster with New Land/Kung Fu and Nakia all failing. They introduced a movie @9 and moved Kung Fu to 8. Sun  NBC  with Disney and Mystery Movie (Columbo McCloud, MacMillan and Wife/Amy Prentiss)did well. ABC flopped with Sonny Bono and recovered by moving Six Million Dollar Man from Fri as a lead in to the movie. CBS hoped Apples Way would be another Waltons but no, so Cher did what Sonny couldn't. Kojak and Mannix successfully finished out the night. Two other shows on the ratings list were Adams of Eagle Lake starring Andy Griffith. Only 2 episodes aired and did well, so I'm not sure what happened there. As for The Law it was a series follow up to a 2 and a half hour NBC special movie .

    • Trust is very easily lost and very hard to re-build.
    • Oh, I know it was. I was just talking about how it's not giving me parallels to Caroline dying. It's really as far from it as possible.  But about the foreshadowing - Hahahhahah. Yes. And you missed one - Liam googling - "what is cancer"...
    • GH 2-17-21 Denise Alexander's last appearance https://www.instagram.com/p/DJdjXgwJ1Ez/
    • @Maxim This Liam dying out of the blue was crafted in a hurry for three reasons: 1. To facilitate JMW's leave 2. To prop Steffy - 'Oh, Steffy has so much grace and moral superiority that she ignored everything that swine HoLo did to tell her for the sake of their daughters. Queen Stephanie would be so proud of her!' 3. Distracting Steffy enough to give Lunacy an easy way to slither into Finn's life. Once Luna discovers that Lame is dying, she'll play that card: 'Dad, life is too short and precious!' If this was an intentional story, we would've had the typical B&B foreshadowing - Liam faceplanting into a bowl of pasta, Lame missing meetings, being forgetful. Instead, Lame does an impulsive quick quit and $B doesn't even care enough to make a single attempt to get him back? Please.
