1989/90 Dallas was regularly being beaten by Perfect Strangers at 9 pm and with the March 1990 move to 10 pm it was regularly being beaten by 20/20. Fall 1990 at 10 pm it was regularly being beaten by 20/20 and 1991 return to 9 pm it was being regularly beaten by Perfect Strangers. I was floored when I saw that twice in 1991 the 9 pm time slot winner was Family Matters. It's one thing for big bad Larry Hagman to get knocked off the throne at CBS by sweet unassuming yet savage Angela Lansbury, but another thing entirely to get beaten in the time slot by Urkel.

CBS owned Friday from 1980-1985. Miami Vice had 1985/86 as the new hotness but then NBC messed up their Friday line up in Fall 1986. ABC launched TGIF in Fall 1989 and it became a 1990s staple.

Dallas was circling the drain during those final years. I guess Katzman felt as long as Hagman and Duffy were still around viewers would continue to watch whatever stupid crappy storylines they were throwing out there.

Duffy returning to the show was a huge mistake. They bent over backwards to pay him an outlandish amount of money so Hagman could go back to the boys club/ playground behind the scenes at the cost of losing the rest of their original cast. Katzman had rid of Capice and did whatever he wanted.

I found Duffy downright insufferable after his return. He had this smug arrogance about him and bled over into his portrayal of Bobby.

Thank you for reminding me, @kalbir, I totally had forgotten that, lol.

ICAM.  Like you said, @SoapDope, Larry Hagman had his onscreen sparring partner back, but I think the audience was pissed off at the suggestion that they had wasted an entire season of their lives watching that show.

Like I pointed out before, it's quite telling that none of the long-time female cast members were part of the main cast in the final season.

CBS strangely gave Dallas a two year renewal in the spring of 1989. Apparently they had other issues to deal with. And they were very hands off with the show, particularly for the last season. So Katzman and Hagman were allowed to run the show into the ground. Contrast this with Knots, where David Jacobs temporarily shut down the show in its penultimate season for a reset because he felt the showrunners had lost their way.

Frankly, they should have shut down Dallas during the 1987-88 season, because that’s when there was a big plunge in both the ratings and the show’s quality.

I assume it must've been a way to control costs - as you said, they had bigger issues to deal with and agreeing with a certain licensing cost from Lorimar probably seemed like a good deal. Of course, Lorimar just kept hacking away at the shows cast to try and keep a profit on the show ultimately not even using the cheaper cast members in all episodes of season 14.

We all know Fall 1987-Spring 1991 was CBS primetime third place mess era. I don't know what was going on in the business end at CBS but in the programming end there was Nielsen people meters, 1988 writer's strike, and the primetime line up fell into either aging/fading shows or new shows that weren't showing much growth.

Dallas goes off the rails in the aftermath of Pamela disappearance and was effectively over with Sue Ellen departure.

Dallas sent viewers an unintentional subliminal message after the dream season:  "Don't take any of this seriously.  We don't know what we're doing. We're writing by the seat of our pants."

I was glad to have Duffy back (and thrilled to have Barbara Bel Geddes back on the show), but my interest began to wane drastically after the dream season, because there was no longer any pretense of "art" or "carefully plotted stories" after such a transparent reversal.

    • Even though I can firm a map of Michigan (that included Bay City) was used on the show, I still never heard Michigan referred to in any of the dialogue -- ever.  So the map doesn't really make it canon, in my opinion.  That map was probably supplied by the prop-guy, and he might not have even told TPTB that he was going to use an identifiable state map.  On the other hand, there were hints that it was in Michigan, with references to cold winters, etc.  And on Somerset, a nearby city was Lansing.  But I don't recall Lansing ever being mentioned on AW, but perhaps it was.   I do wish TPTB would have made AW's canonical location in Michigan.  First, because many fans already believed it was in Michigan, and because eventually putting all the remaining P&G soap opera cities in Illinois was silly and pointless.  Variety is the spice of live, my dears.

date: Wednesday, June 4 | Sara A. Bible, Danielle Paige | Phideaux Xavier Anita is definitely lost in space. The space of her own mind and history. Oh, hello, miss eye-sex at the bar of Uptown! I see you eye-sexing Ms Chelsea! We love to see it. Shanice stopped Dana dead in her tracks. Good on her. It comes out: Barbara was the fourth Articulette, started the group, came up with the name, etc. Dante Greene is about to become the most hated man to exist in this universe, and that's a high-level position that many covet. I appreciate seeing Anita own up to her wrongdoings and that Vernon is still by her side. So, Sharon wants to use Anita for her own benefit, and that does surprise me. That ugliness is right there. At least Tracy, outwardly, seems more open to forgiving Anita and reuniting for the one-off concert. I had a feeling it might've been a stroke (or mini-stroke) but did not want to admit it. It hits close to home for me. Very close. Oh, that glimmer and gleam in Bill's eye and that ever-so-slight smirk on his face of Dani checking on him at the hospital. Yeah. He's still got it for her. Vernon continues to be a wise man with some wisdom unlike any other, and I love that he's getting through to Anita. Ugh. Sharon, you're ugly, ugly, ugly. You will reap what you sow. That's right, child bride, watch the woman that knows your husband better than you ever could. Katherine, mama, sit down and be careful. Now this is in the firm hands of Jacob and the police department. Dana, barking up Andre's tree. She works fast. Like a bitch in heat, fast. The one thing Tracy has with Anita that unites them is their love for Barbara and acknowledging her as part of the Articulette's history. Andre, you big dumb dumb. You never saw the suspect the footage before the police can. Ugh. Notes: For the first time in a while, we see Tide and get a commercial right after.
    • I feel like they've worked out the kinks with most of the wigs (notably: Anita, Kat & Chelsea) but they still haven't gotten it right with Naomi. They need to cut her a custom hairline to account for her widows peak. I also don't think you can do a side part without addressing that.
    • There's nothing about the Kyle/Claire pairing that makes me say "Damn, I really want them together."   Yep. Everything interesting about her was swept away.   We were supposed to be moved by that bracelet, but all I could think of was "We never see these kids." Oh, and hearing Harrison had a charm was LOL   Exactly. It's vets rinsing and repeating all the old hits. Josh Griffith thinks honoring history means giving us the same stories over again. Where are the young people on this show? WTH is going on? Cole is a perfect example to represent everything JG is. He does reference history and bring characters back, but it's invariably a huge disappointment. Cole has done NOTHING since his return. Now he's sick, and instead of us worrying about him, we're smirking because these wealthy people won't call a doctor. I don't think anyone cares if he lives or dies.   Complete disaster. The Alexander Dumas story is the worst of all. ALL this buildup for ALL these months -- you just know it's going to land with a thud. Even the best writer couldn't follow through with something good. Will any of it matter? Two days after we see all these shocked faces when Dumas appears, we'll be back to talking about takeovers and changes in job titles.   None of this will change unless Josh Griffith is fired, and unfortunately, the ratings aren't calling for a firing. I will never understand why Y&R and B&B are immune to long periods of relly bad storytelling.
    • I find Kat annoying but Colby plays the part well! I do like the antagonism between Kat/Eva and Kat/Leslie.  Leslie has balls. I found it a bit annoying at first, but at least the writers are keeping it as a throughline. The "twist" of Eva hiding the evidence to protect Leslie was nice. I hope it's a way to keep Leslie going longer. I was afraid she'd get written into a corner and she's one of the best finds of the show.  Tamara is nailing her scenes. I was losing interest in the Articulettes, but Barbara's suicide and now Sharon wanting to use the reunion to push herself at Anita's expense have me interested again.  Nice to see Dani tone it down with Bill and Hayley.

        Naomi's wig is sliding!
    • Uh oh, is Bill giving Dani some hope here? He appreciated her concern, so it's not all hate there. Hayley doesn't seem so pleased.

This dumb bish is leaving a trail of witnesses to corroborate her crashing out
    • For all of Kat's interest in "true crime" shows, she doesn't seem to understand some things.  I mean, you don't tell the suspect your suspicions too early -- you don't want the suspect to cover it up before there's enough for an arrest.  Kat shouldn't have told Leslie that she'd found the jacket and the receipts.
