I remember watching Willy Wonka in school and was so captivated - most of all by Gene’s performance, which was both soft, rough-edged, nasty, and empathetic. It was a bravura performance, and I’m so glad that the movie became beloved by many because that meant they could appreciate his work.

I remember the scene where Wonka limped to the gates, with the parents, kids and reporters worried and confused - only for him to do a somersault. He’s fine! He’s the trained monkey they need him to be! And from the beginning, he does what he does time and time again - shines a line on the shallowness of pop culture. A kind, decent man who struggled to walk let them down. A man who did flips and tricks - he’s what society expects and demands.

This scene was Gene’s idea, to keep the audience on their toes. And it is, along with everything he did in this movie, and throughout much of his career, brilliant.

There are a lot of things I will remember about Gene Wilder, like his marriage to Gilda Radner, or his Mel Brooks films, but this movie meant so much to me and I can never thank him enough for it.

Reactions and a statement from his family:

A genius.  His performance in Young Frankenstein had so many little bits where he threw himself into the role that was so ridiculous but realistic at the same time.    I love as he is realizing just what brain was put into the body and gives this little "ahh" as he starts to lose it.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is like The Wizard of Oz., touching the hearts of children generation after generation, and I am no different for either films. Gene Wilder was tremendous, and judging from the scene where he yells at Charlie, which always shook me up, he could play drama just as well as comedy. I didn't waste anytime after reading this news in watching the "Pure Imagination" clip. It is personal shame that I have yet to take the time to watch more of his work.

Gene Wilder's nephew said that his uncle did not want to reveal his Alzheimer's diagnosis, not out of vanity but because he didn't want to sadden all those kids who had grown up knowing him as Willy Wonka. He didn't want to be responsible for one less smile in the world.

Arthur Hiller, a prolific director ( Love Story, The Americanization of Emily) who directed Gene, along with Richard Pryor in two movies, just passed away less than 2 weeks ago.

I suspect we would have had a few withdrawals next year if Israel had won. I don't think many people would relish going to Jerusalem as things stand now. Not to mention it would have been a prime target for terrorist attacks.
    • And they've given us plenty. Sets, outdoor scenes, music licensing, etc. And that was the point of me using DAYS... so. It's obvious the casino set is not intended for long-term use, hence why it's likely it wasn't as evolved as the other community sets, etc.

    • I just had thought of how to save the Perkins family. (Inspired by Rituals) -- What if Marisa Perkins was Augusta Lockridge's sister? Fictionally, they could've both been local girls, one married rich and one married poor. Originally, I was going to suggest that Marisa be Sophia's sister, but then I realized Joe and Kelly would've been first cousins.  Of course, it would've truly inspired Sophia was if Rosa Andrade sister, with Rosa and Santana moving in to help CC raise the kids once Sophia disappeared.  While this could've avoided both gross CC and Santana affairs, the times were not right for a story about intersectional inequity.
    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJxW5DLJLId/ Another World is my forever favorite soap opera. But it's finale is almost universally hated by its fans. What this is, is an edit where I've deleted everything I didn't like!!!
    • The Perkins family had potential to be a nice alternative to the more dysfunctional Capwells and wackier Lockridges... but I think a few factors did in the family. 1) Recasting of Joe Perkins 2) Bad casting of the Perkins Patriarch, and the one note writing for that character. 3) Lack of antagonistic interaction between the Capwells/Lockridges and Perkins.  (There was no awkwardness between Jade/Ted.. or CC disapproving of his son being friends with that Perkins girl, etc). 4) Wasting of Jade thus wasting the potential of the actress (which was realized on Days of Our Lives).  She had more potential than Laken oddly enough. The only member of the Perkins family that had appeal and a somewhat thought out story arc was Amy.
    • @GymnastGuyThanks for posting the three new Capitol 1985 episodes today. The two labeled March 12, and 13 are misidentified. The March 12 labeled one actually aired November 12 1985 which I figured out because Kenny Rogers' movie Wild Horses aired November 12th and it was announced over the "March 12" Cap credits. In addition, Craig Carlson is listed in the April credits but not the March. Craig left Capitol sometime after July 1985 before he rejoined OLTL in the credits by October 15, 1985; he was replaced on Cap by Radcliffe and Hamner. In these posted episodes Radcliffe/Hamner names appear in the March 85 episodes but not in the April.
