Star Trek returns with streaming series

I'm a huge Star Trek fan (TNG, DS9 and VOY).  While I HATE the fact this is another prequel (I want to see what happens AFTER DS9 and VOY)...  I still thought the Discovery premiere was better than I expected.  I'm ready to see next week's episode to see the new cast and where this all goes.  I love the lead (Michael) and I like Saru (?).  I really didn't take to Michelle Yeoh's captain - she reminds me of the stiff Genevieve Bujold, the first Janeway before Mulgrew took over.  Seemed robotic and unbelievable.  I'm hopeful that was her last episode...

LOL! It's cursed.

Season 1 was okay with a great cast, but a pale shadow of what it could've been. There was a lot of mediocre network TV episodic stuff. And they wasted no time pushing out the huge talents Fuller had hired (Nicholas Meyer, etc.) after the first couple episodes, and those two replacement showrunners weren't very good - and now apparently PR nightmares.

For all his eccentricities and recklessness with budget they should've left Fuller alone. Maybe he'd have flown the coop anyway, but we'll never know - and the incredible writers and directors he had in place were far above anything that aired in Season 1. Further, Alex Kurtzman is a massive hack. I guess I'll keep watching it out of my love for the franchise and cast, but after the silly finale bringing in the Enterprise I am not expecting a lot.

I thought and said the same thing when I read the news earlier this morning (and I'm not even a fan of ST).

Frankly, I'm not surprised Harberts and Berg turned out to be such lousy show runners, since I've never liked any of the stuff they've penned for various shows.

Actually, why are names like Kurtzman, Orci, Harberts and Berg still running around at all? The former two have bounced from show to show leaving a path of destruction, while the latter two probably should have been banned from TV production after their involvement in Shonda Rhimes' massive flop Off the Map.

No it won't - this is amazing!  As a long time Trek fan, this is music to my ears.  We had TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and TNG movies all running around the same time and it was NOT too much.  The Trek universe is LARGE, and much larger in story and possibilities than Star Wars.  The key will be to ensure they work together and don't contradict storyline/timeline/history, bc that will enrage some Trek fans.

I'd be very excited if it wasn't for Alex Kurtzman masterminding things. He's a hack.

The Hollywood Reporter version of this story indicates Patrick Stewart may return as Picard in one new project. I've long said the TNG cast is owed an honorable sendoff with a miniseries on Netflix, but CBS All Access and written by Kurtzman is not what I had in mind. I guess we'll see.

Season 2 trailer is surprisingly pretty good and upbeat, though I'm still not keen into leaning on TOS characters with Spock (now played by Ethan Peck). The new Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) look good though, and Sonequa and the main cast are still excellent.

FYI: Against frankly long odds, I am surprised to report Season 2 of Discovery is very good so far. Thoughtful, fun, and taking its time to think and build character, including the much-neglected bridge crew from last year. I haven't seen a Star Trek episode as well-paced as this week's since the occasional good episode of Voyager. Recommended - try CBS All Access via Amazon Prime, the stream is better.

I always liked Melissa George, who American TV has never given enough credit. Seeing her tonight essaying the classic role of Vina from the still-spellbinding original TOS pilot "The Cage" - played previously by the great Susan Oliver in 1965 - was a pleasant surprise. She nailed it. And the show has been so good this season, which I did not expect.

    • I wouldn't want to see Felicia or Quinn or killed off. Felicia kept some of us going during some of the bad patches. P&G were not going to invest in Quinn or a family for her especially not with MDP as headwriter. AW had all the potential and P&G allowed it go by the wayside even before MDP got there. P&G and NBC never cared. Look at the indifferent way the Lawrences were written. P&G and execs knew Quinn had fans. They just didn't care and had pretend amnesia. It's reminiscent of the whole Maureen debacle on GL. There should have been outcry at the idea of Donna being killed off. It was an idiotic idea. The same way with Frankie. JFP should never have been allowed to waste so much money on that ridiculous hospital set and the new opening she lifted from ER. I did like the closing theme so there's that.
    • Hahaha are you doing a '93 rewatch?? Wow - so Reva was married to the father and his two sons. I guess I can't be surprised with GL and the citizens of SF. I'm currently watching Dinah and Blake, who are both each other's stepmothers AND stepdaughters... you have Alan-Michael who date Dinah, married Blake, and then married both sisters Harley and Lucy... I could go on and go.  Someone, maybe you, told me very early on that GL is very incestuous and I 100% see it now haha.
    • The Cosby Show recorded in the same studio in Brooklyn. AW had had more black characters for a few years after Quinn first appeared. Not all of them lasted a long time, but we had the Morgans (Bob, Henrietta, RJ, Mary Sue), Quinn's brother Ed, Abel Marsh and his twin Leo Mars, Roy Bingham, Lily, and finally Carter and Grant Todd.

    • It is clear the secret involves some sort of roadside incident so it could have been a police stop. And tge Duprees support a police foundation could one of the clues that Martin's secret involves the police.
    • Hours later, I'm still wondering, what was EJ's plan in going to the hospital today? Does he think it's like a car dealership, and you can simply walk in and make an offer? That's why I laughed when Steve said that Dr. not-Rolf comes and goes.  One gets the sense the people in Salem randomly leave their offices, midday, to talk to relatives and co-conspirators.  I understand, they don't use the phone on soaps.  But, the amount of walking these citizens do in a day is remarkable.
    • Look how long it took to finally write Jack an age appropriate long term relationship with a woman he’s had history with since the damn 80’s.
    • This Sarah/Xander Lake Geneva weekend getaway trip will either be where Xander finds out that Sarah knew about the Phillip situation, or an emergency happens that prevents them from going.  Brownie points for the Lake Geneva mention since that's the getaway for a lot of people that live in northern Illinois/Chicago. EJ is kinda hot... though I never thought that about him when the previous actor played him.  I do think a Dimera owning the hospital would be interesting since the Hortons/Brady's have always had a rivalry with the Dimeras... and carrying that over to the hospital would be organic.
