What storylines do you think soap operas would never do?

IIRC, too, GH's Quartermaines were also broke once upon a time before Lila saved the day with that damn pickle relish.

Soaps have done the "this character was molested as a child" stories, and AMC did a child porn story with Brooke, Laura and Jim Thomason in the 90s, although Laura was a teenager and not a young child. During AMC's story about Erica's rape, it was clearly established that her rapist was a pedophile who preyed on little girls, and during Erica's trial for stabbing Dimitri, a 12 year old girl accused him of rape and then killed herself. While Erica was on the stand reliving her rape, her rapist went after Bianca. The show deliberately left it vague as to exactly how far Richard Fields got before Kendall walked into the room and caught him, but Bianca's clothes were torn and she was obviously traumatized. TPTB stated at the time that there was no need to graphically portray a child being molested on the show because it would be cruel to a child actress, and the point could be made that this terrible thing was happening without actually showing a lot of detail. I'm okay with how it was portrayed, and I thought at the time that it was very well done. I still think it was a very compelling episode.

As far as a story in which a child is molested "in real time" with a pedophile grooming a child and then abuse continuing for weeks or months, no I don't think we'll see that, and I'm fine with that. It would be a horrible situation to put a child actor or actress in, and I think you'd lose a lot of your audience who watch soaps to be entertained. It's hard to argue that watching a child be repeatedly molested would be entertaining. Then, what do you do with that pedophile character? You can't make him (or her) too nice because your audience is going to demand that he (or she) be punished, and in soap world when your villain goes past the point of redemption, he's usually killed off. I've read and seen "A Time to Kill" [a book/movie about a man who kills the men who raped his little girl], but I don't think I'd want to watch that story unfold for months.

In 1979 on Y&R, Casey Reed revealed to Brock that her father Nick Reed sexually abused her as a child and that was part of the reason she had trouble with relationships with men. She tried to warn Nikki who didn't listen. Nick became jealous of Nikki's relationship with Greg Foster and tried to break them up. He also use to sneak to watch her undress. He then tried to rape her and she killed him by hitting him in the head with a lamp.

I have a feeling that many -- and when I say "many," I'm really talking about the majority -- that many of the ideas we suggest in this thread will be met with, "PASSIONS did that, too".

Passions did just about every story.

What about a story on an American soap about a woman abusing the man that she is involved with?

Lots of people said this, but I totally agree that gay stories would be better in soaps if they were taken more seriously....

It's sad that they just can't do stories that simply involved either 2 men or 2 women living out their lives the way other characters in soaps do.

I'v said this a thousand times that on Y&R for Fen they should have made him gay and put him in a story involving one of the other male legacy characters (Noah, Kyle, Chance, Nate etc...) where he's in love with one of the guys but they have a serious crush on his brother Scotty, who isn't gay and in my own little Y&R world is already married with a child or 2. Fen does all he can till the other guy takes notice and they eventually develop into a real life gay supercouple that plays out appropriately.

They could even do triangles with 3 men or women.....I'm scratching my head as to what's taking Bradley too long to do something like that on B&B...tongue.png

A story where a 25 or 30 year old ingenue comments on the 65 or 75 yr old leading man that he is way too old, the idea is gross, and did he really think she would go for someone like him?

No one mentioned the orangutan that was also a nurse that was in love with the male lead

I keep forgetting Shawn Christian was on Passions. They should have Daniel and Rafe hookup on DAYS and see if lightning strikes twice :P

My wish is that GH does a story where Nathan is torn between Maxie and Lucas.

I never watched Passions but these storylines you guys are listing off make me go WTF big time. Some girl had a baby with her gay brother? WHY. The only thing from Passions I've ever seen was a youtube clip of the hermaphrodite character giving birth to his dad's baby. SMH

I'm guessing we'll never see an orgy on a soap.

to be fair to Passion, it was revealed that Whitney's husband, wasn't her brother (Chad), but the man (Vincent) he was cheating with was! At the end of the story, it was revealed that Chad was their first cousin in addition to being Vincent's uncle. It was a hot nasty mess

I feel like that's a story they could have done on GH with Jax and Carly. She already held his balls around her neck

Oh, that was nothing. Prince Albert and Delia on RYAN'S HOPE was far weirder. ;)

That's cold...but it's also funny as hell.

Dear God. That goes beyond even the level of parody.

What I don't think we'll see on soaps: kinkier sex. Passions notwithstanding, I don't think we'll see much in the way of threesomes, BDSM play or anything taboo along those lines. I think network execs would freak out, and given how people lost their minds over a bare butt cheek and characters saying "sh*t" on AMC 2.0, I think a lot of conservative fans would object. AMC has hinted at a character wanting a threesome, but they've never actually gone there. I'm sure there are examples of soap love scenes with someone tied to a bed or with characters in costume, but I don't know that we've seen anything more risque than that.

I remember people having a [!@#$%^&*] attack over hearing the risque things that were planned but didn't happen

I'm going to have fun with this topic and throw some wild stuff out there.

A character diagnosed with IBS that often complains how it affects thier life. The character picks and chooses items off a menu to avoid the runs, they pass wind on occasion and sometimes has to rush to the bathroom because their stomach is cramping and messes themselves.

Characters have a group marriage.

A bigot that all the other characters tolerate as part of their charm.

A couple who are an abusive relationship for decades and their seems to be no resolution....OOOPS, they have already done that with Nikki & Victor on Y&R.

A major character commits suicide by placing the gun in their mouth and they show the graphic details like blood and brain matter go all over the place.

Yikes! That would be disturbing.

The IBS thing, now that's just funny. I would SO love that. I could see B&B's Pam developing something, which would cause her to be unable to eat her own lemon bars anymore. But imagine if they didn't go the comical route and gave it to a young stud or a fresh ingenue.

Yes, let's ponder which leading lady would be open to the idea of vaginal fisting.
