Shows That Got BETTER Over the Seasons

As long as we're going down NBC comedy memory lane...Night Court. While I loved both Selma Diamond and Florence Halop, the show really gelled when the cast turnover stabilized around season three when Markie Post and Marsha Warfield came on.

Definitely agree about NCIS (seasons three through eight---or whenever they forced Bellsario out---were the best) and TNG.

Iffy on Cheers. There was a point Rebecca really started grating on my nerves, but I'm not sure they weren't a stronger ensemble after Long left.

Completely disagree about MASH. It got really preachy once Alda threw his weight around and took over the show. I find the first couple of seasons completely enjoyable (up to the point McLean Stevenson left). I like the next period---until Radar leaves. After Radar leaves, it's completely unwatchable. Not that I felt that way at the time, but now I wonder how I sat through it.

Little House on the Prairie. The early years are classic and heartwarming in their own way, but when I want Little House, I typically want the more melodramatic/Michael Landon has lost his everloving mind episodes from seasons 3-7. Once the cast stabilized as the Ingalls family, the Olesons, the Garveys, and "the town," the series was a perfect soapy Midwestern.

Degrassi: The Next Generation. Anyone will tell you that the first two seasons, while good, are child's play compared to the real teen drama of seasons 3-5.

I couldn't agree more - especially about the latter.

Barney Miller was an ensemble show with extremely tight cast and crew, and seemed to get stronger as the years passed. Though the first two seasons will always be my personal favorites, because Sgt. Chano Amenguale was still on. Gregory Sierra = wub.png !!

As far as more current shows go, The Middle definitely fits that category. While it had its moments, the first season is pretty much take it or leave it. The second season was slightly better, but the show really didn't start to hit its stride until Season 3. No offense, but I don't think the dropping of Chris Kattan from the cast makes the improvement in quality of the show a coincidence.

Next?

Yep, it's true. For reasons I can't recall anymore, JoMarie Peyton (Harriet #1) was replaced on "Family Matters" with Judyann Elder. Needless to say, few, if anyone, appreciated the change.

OMG!!! How did I miss this? That was the same when I was a teenager in my house. When did this happen? I can only assume it was senior year in high school or maybe college for me for me to have missed that.

ETA: As for the post, is it safe to say Buffy AND Angel? Cuz those first seasons were hit and mess for the most part. But those Season 2s (barring Angel's leap into Pylea which I always pretend never happened for the most part and usually stop my viewing of Season 2 around the Harmony episode) were things of beauty with hardly a misstep.

Late season 2 Angel was one of the main reasons I gave up the show. They had Angel kill a roomful of people and then...completely dropped it. And then they made all the other characters incompetent to force a reunion with Angel that the writing hadn't earned. Add in Fred, and i was done.

I kind of liked season 1 Buffy. Season 2 was better as a whole but was the start of all the sour angst they overdid.

The X-Files. It was Gillian Anderson's pregnancy and maternity leave in the very first season that forced Chris Carter to get creative and come up with a way to write her off for a short period of time, hence Scully's abduction and the stories it spanned. As a result, the X-Files became far more than just a show about monsters and creepy unexplained things.

IIRC, Peyton left halfway through the final season, after the show had moved (with "Step by Step") from ABC to CBS. That MIGHT be why you missed it, b/c I don't think anyone was watching FM still by that point.

    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.

    • I don't really care about what the men are wearing, or not wearing.   What I care about is focusing on the writing and character development for each of the male characters. Andre really doesn't have a lot of character development that sets him apart from the other male characters except that he seems content to be degraded and mistreated by the elitist Dani.  I would like to know why a good looking younger guy like Andre would willingly be at the mercy of an emotional vampire such as Dani.   Martin, on the other hand, seems to have decent character development.. and it is partly due to how the actor chooses to recite his lines.  Martin was raised in a very privileged household and probably went to the best schools... so it makes sense that he would come across as thinking he was above everyone else.  Most people raised in a upper class situation as the Duprees would view themselves as better than others (it's the same trait Dani seems to employ on those she feels superior to). It makes me wonder how Nicole came out of that family being so warm and nurturing  when her family dynamics seemed very appearance oriented.
    • I know, right. I after just re-reading the thread, I'm like ooppph!
    • Lulu and Dante were divorced before her coma, but she was still in love with him.  He just didn't know.  They haven't been married for years.    I was pretty mixed about Lulu getting involved when it was just a child out there in the world, but now that she realizes it's Gio I am okay with her telling Dante.  It also is her son's sibling.  I still think it's BLQ's choice though.  Lulu is in a rough spot because I think Dante will be mad if she keeps it a secret and Chase, Brook, Lois, etc will be mad if Lulu tells. Without veering too far into the classic area of the show, I had no problem with Robin telling AJ about Michael.  It may not have *exactly* been her place, but she could see how Carly was manipulating the entire situation.  It also ruined her romantic relationship with Jason for good.  Jason and Sonny were furious with Robin and practically ran her out of town, so I think we were to believe she was the bad guy.  It was a bit out of character for Robin to spill, but KMc was leaving the show.
    • Rewatching/binging THE X-FILES Seasons 1 and 2 (almost done). So much fun re-experiencing, especially re-discovering some of the monster-of-the-week stories. THE WEST WING Seasons 1 and 2 as well - so good to rewatch now with 20 years more life experience and understanding. ALSO.... lol FOOTBALLERS' WIVES Season 3, which is just as bonkers as I remember and so so so so fun. I had forgotten about that iconic season cliffhanger. Good times. Excited to rewatch Seasons 4 and 5 since I remember so very little about them. Hope you've been enjoying!
    • @Toups Tyler Topits listed in alpha order with the breakdown writers 5/12 Monday episode. O'Connor still listed as both breakdown and script writer. Kreizman wrote today's script.
