I was going to ask why the big jump for ABC and especially OLTL which was tanking and I noticed the Olympics. That's why they got the huge bump.

Meg Ryan exist from ATWT didn't move the needle.

The ABC bump was from the Olympics. All My Children bump (Olympics helped AMC too) and its ascent to Number 1 was the Greg and Jenny storyline coming to an end with Jenny's death from the jet-ski and Kim Delaney exiting AMC.

The Vanderbilt news archive lists a 22 minute NBC newsbreak for Walter Mondale's announcement of Geraldine Ferraro as his VP candidate. That must be the reason for the interruptions on 7/12/84.

SFT continuing to build its audience, and yet NBC affiliates still won't pick it up. The lack of clearance really prevented them from surviving long-term. With those ~50 extra affiliates, they'd easily be besting RH at this rate.

July 30 & 31 Reva the slut of Springfield. Surprised it didn't get a higher rating. They were opposite Olympics though...

I wonder if the impact of such events would come after they happened rather than on the day they actually aired. While such moments are iconic and memorable, they may spark interest from word of mouth or publications...there was no real way to know they were going to happen. Unlike say weddings or big events, where there was much lead up and more precise timeline in mind.

From this thread, Search for Tomorrow clearance was dropping every year since the move to NBC.

Final week on CBS March 22-26, 1982: 97%

First week on NBC March 29-April 2, 1982: 91%

Week of March 28-April 1, 1983: 85%

Week of March 26-30, 1984: 78%

At this rate, I'm estimating the NBC run ended with about 65% clearance, so similar to what we're seeing in 1984 for The Edge of Night at the end of its ABC run.

So a 5% drop from March 1984 to December 1986. Thank you for the information.
