PP: AMC & OLTL to air twice weekly

I'm not seeing what the horrible sin is in AMC showcasing its new young leads and establishing them when the show has been on less than a month. People know damn well who Brooke, Adam, Dixie, etc. are and they're on pretty regularly, excepting David Canary who is at least semi-retired. They may not be on in four (or two, or whatever) day a week frontburner storylines all about them, but there is time for that. As of now, they are on shown with their families, their loved ones and/or their work fairly regularly, and the context has been building for their story.

I love Adam and Brooke, but expecting either of them to be running full-tilt in a huge storyline (which appears to be coming in the next two weeks, anyway, with

Dimitri

and the impending Chandler power struggle) all about them twelve or thirteen episodes in while the show just got J.R. out of a coma and started re-establishing the entire fabric of the show and introducing all the new kids is unfair. It would be an unfair expectation for any vet, unless you thrive on the feeling of being perpetually screwed and wronged. Which some people do, but I don't get it.

Maybe it could be "age discrimination" with the teens/20 somethings - vs - the "old" vets over 50 or vise versa, either way. Therefore, the fix and solution would be to add the 30/40 something key demo age groups and take some of the focus and emphasis off these 2 wide age groups. Fill in the gaps/holes to get a better balance.

Brooke and Opal need stronger storylines and both Julia and Jill are talented and gifted actresses. I would love to see Opal start a romance/relationship of her own and broaden her character.

What is fair or unfair? Stay tuned and take the ride!

My feeling is this. You advertise one thing to get me to watch and then show something else. Legacy or not you're right I don't know the 4 characters. Let me get to know them slowly. And right again I know the ones you mentioned and they're why I tuned in. My knowing them is why PP brought them over so they could bring viewers that watched the network version so why is it a crime I expect to see them?

I don't expect B&A to be in some huge story. But I DO expect Brooke to have actual lines to say. To be in character and not just appear (literally just stood there and appeared) to hold JR's suitcase or not have her sole purpose be to ask Celia - whom she barely knows - about her love life while her soon to be again step son just came out of a 5 yr coma. And when she's with Adam I expect to at least the get the time afforded to them and conversations about THEM as is given to AJ/Miranda's 50th 'you're the bestest/no you're the bestest' convo.

DC didn't like LA. His nice PR way of saying it was 'I'm retiring.' He then proceeded to do a CYE ep and filled in for a starring part in a Jack Klugman play. Maybe he's 'semi-retired' now but the whole 'retirement' thing back then. No. Jennifer Bassey confirmed.

The

Dimitri

thing?

MN

said they're in and out over a period of time. And then will have scenes with

JR.

I'll just hope Brooke gets to be involved in a signifigant way and that someday I'll get to see her wedding to Adam.

Maybe it'll change. Maybe it won't. I'll still watch. And if I don't like something I'll still say it. Doesn't mean I'm 'thriving on getting screwed over.' Means I'm venting my frustration and would like some improvement.

PP needed cast from ABC to come on over to the reboot in efforts to bring in their fanbases and to have familiarity upfront to viewers. Rapid aging of the children is a hint that "the next generation" of PV citizens is in the making and to chronologically move the show forward, or am I wrong here? PP needs to get the key age demo they are looking for to grow the show for long term success. Their strategy, well what is really going on and what do they really want here?

The writers are busy writing the next block shooting and hopefully taking their time as well as the producers tweaking and adjusting things. It is too early to call anything.

The problem is you've been frustrated since pretty much Day 2. At which point the show had not yet aired for a full sixty minutes. That is not realistic to me.

The way I look at it is this: When the McTavish-era AMC knocked her off I thought Brooke would disappear for good and never be seen again. Instead, she came back, reunited with Adam and became part of one of the show's new signature tentpole couples. The final shot of the opening is her and Adam in a romantic clinch. Did any of us ever believe that would ever, ever happen? She's now basically the First Lady of Pine Valley. That is unheard of to me, and carries weight enough for me right now. She's mostly involved in other people's stories at the moment, but I think I'm going to wait until a month or two of the show is under my belt before I complain that they're wasting Julia Barr. Brooke is a tentpole character now, and she'll probably never have the massive airtime she did in the '80s or '90s, but she is a real presence for the first time in well over a decade and I think it'll only get bigger. If people actually give it time.

You're forgetting that these shows have been showcasing almost everyone everyday in some capacity. The pacing and structure is a lot different. It's not like a network hour show where we see eight people and we know that's it for the day. Almost everyone has been on a lot. Not always in the same quantity or focus each day, either. Even when A.J. and Miranda, or Pete and Celia or even the OLTL kids are on, they're not necessarily the biggest thing that day.

The show is called All My Children. It is not called All My Vets. It is not called All My David/Jesse/Angie/Zack/Cara. The show is called All My Children. Teen set has always been focused heavily in AMC, to date. Maybe at some point in time the Over 50 actors/Vets will have to step back a little in order for focus to be on the teens/20 somethings. IDK what would be a better fix.

If PP wants to target a youth audience (as it looks like), then they have made a mistake by relaunching AMC and OLTL and making them into youth shows. It doesn't take Einstein to figure out that the target audience for an AMC or OLTL revival would be the most loyal fans who watched either soap on ABC. But unfortunately for PP, the audience most loyal to the Nixon soaps was considerably older than what they think is desirable.

PP should have launched new soaps, but it is clear that they lacked the creativity to write and promote brand new ventures. They took the easy way out by using the AMC and OLTL names and turning them into new, youthful soap operas. (In fairness to them, ABC did the same thing under Frons.) PP must really be clueless if they are in panic mode already.

I kind of agree with this. PP should have come out of the gate right away with the emphasis on youth and started writing stories in a way that puts them front and center and not the vets, so much. But on the flipside, they need the vets to get the show up on its feet in strength. It would be like damn if I do, and damn if I don't. No one wins.

Max, I say this with all sincerity, because I think you're always respectful of other's opinions and genuinely seem interested in what people have to say about the genre (even if I still think your comment about how "horrific" AMC's ratings near the end were seems more an opinion based on what some blogs have said, than on fact.) But... You never watched AMC really, did you? I mean--the number one story on the show--whether it's good or bad--is based around Angie, Jesse and Zack. One of the main other stories is based around JR, David, Dixie and Bianca. How is this a show based around brand new characters?

The last few years of AMC on ABC there were 5 characters who were the main focus (Ryan/Greenlee, Zack/Kendall, and David) and there were so many complaints/gripes/grievances against the writers/showrunners for backburning other characters and even complaints from some of the actors themselves (Susan and MEK being a couple of them and maybe Walt too).

So the new show focusing on Angie/Jesse/Zack/David would put them in the same category with the fans saying characters are being overlooked and/or backburned. Wash, rinse and repeat. and nothing changes, nothing.

The more I look at Hulu the more I wish that PP would've held off on reducing the episode count for another month or so. So many shows are going on summer hiatus that I think it would've been good to see if AMC/OLTL could benefit from that.

Agree. But not going to happen unfortunately.

Close enough. And ITA. Anyone who thinks Ron's OLTL was the best era let alone of ANY soap (what are they smoking?) needs to take a seat as far as I'm concerned.

I like the writing. Just not the balance and rotation - so far. But for me, it's still 20 times better than the last 10 yrs of network excluding LB's stuff. Ditto for OLTL.

I get your point on balance/rotation. Too much of one thing and not enough of other things.

That's not really what Agnes meant by "All My Children."

I know this is a bit off topic but...

The creator of Arrested Development is basically begging people not to binge watch when the show returns this weekend and to please watch it in order. I think he makes his case very well.

Like I said, OT but at least it's not about some idiot on FB. tongue.png

Within a few days from when posted “@MsSimone1978: Hey Jared, should we watch the shows the day it airs? just a friendly reminder...

Guess the thought that ad rates are higher for views in the first 3 days must be correct....Should be fine watching 2 eps on Wednesdays and 2 on Thursdays though.

Then why is PP having such a damn cow about people binge watching then. I wouldn't doubt there are people who watch with in a few days of the shows being posted

One thing. All My Children was never literally about 'children.' It meant everyone. AN has explained this in the past. So the focus on teens has nothing to do with that.

Exactly. She explained it meant everyone. She took it from the bible I believe. All God's children.

I think it was people waiting until Saturday/Sunday to watch the whole week. They're not getting good ad rates for Mon/Tue/Wednesday episodes if people are watching 4-5 days later. I've read after a show is posted for 2-3 days on Hulu, the advertising rates drop significantly for all subsequent views. Again, none of this is confirmed by PP but I definitely suspect they make more money in the first 24-72 hours.

I wish they had waited to launch until like this week when there is a significant reduction of fresh content on Hulu with so many finales happening last week. Then they could have promoted it like "Revenge & Scandal may not be new until September but AMC & OLTL have new episodes all summer long." Actually, Hulu and the shows should be playing up the new all summer angle even now.

I get your point on balance/rotation. Too much of one thing and not enough of other things.

I thought today was much better. Shorter scenes for the teens. Zach had the day off. Felt like more people were getting story. Brooke had some scenes of substance and she had actual lines. LOL Also liked that Adam suspects that Adam Jr is lying and that Brooke is going to be on that for him. JR's being nice to Brooke now but I'm thinking he's going to be plotting against her in the future. That would be interesting. Also

Brooke will be making David an offer I read which I guess is about his getting his Dr career going again

so more mixing it up will be nice.

Liked seeing Cara with someone other than David going on about her hidden kid. RB I think is doing a great job so far as Adam Jr while I still miss JY. Hard to believe as I thought he was atrocious as one of the Lucky recasts on GH. So I wouldn't mind a triangle with David/Cara/JR but it also seems they're going for Jessie/Angie/David. Maybe it's chem testing.

Loved Angie/Jessie mixing it up with BC and glad MC is still able to 'tweak' his lines to the way Billy Clyde would say things. He cracks me up.

More mixing up and rotation and occasional breaks from teens would vastly improve things for me. And of course still wanting my B&A big wedding.

I do think it's funny that in all of this "too many new characters" talk, we point to Angie and Jesse as two vets who are getting frontburner story at the moment. Circa 1982, they were both fresh-faced newbies, totally new characters, Jesse only related to longer-running characters in a distant way, yet they were on the frontburner.

And let's not talk about the Cortlandts' extravagant masquerade ball and Cliff and Nina's expensive ass wedding, both of which occurred within their first year to year-and-a-half on the show, none of them having any ties whatsoever to any other characters at the time.
