I seem to remember reading that Gloria Monty, during her second GH stint in 1991-1992, said she wanted to keep AB as the theme forever, because of the tradition that it represented for the show. I can definitely understand where she was coming from, but clearly Wendy Riche disagreed, as FOTH debuted about a year after she became EP.

I was reading a little bit about Gloria Monty in the PEOPLE Magazine special. Can anyone elaborate on the major changes she made to the show that set it on its course to being as popular as it was? It sounded like adventure stories were the main thing she added. It also indicated she let go a lot of older cast members - is that true? Vets were let go or were they just dropped to recurring?

Side note but sort of related: when did Steve Hardy and Jessie Brewer stop being used as "major" players? Were they both on contract throughout their runs or when did they go recurring and how often were they used? Thanks guys.

When Gloria took over, the cast was relatively small. She expanded it by adding some of the most popular characters in GH history such as Luke, the Quartermaines, & the Scorpios. The only veteran that really saw the axe due to Monty was Lucille Wall, who had suffered several strokes and was basically a vegetable. She made a final appearance a couple years before her death and it was very sad.

Beradino remained on contract until his death in 1996. He appeared regularly even while dying of pancreatic cancer. His final scene, which he shared with Sarah Brown, Leslie Charleson, Anne Jeffreys, Shell Kepler, & Brad Maule, aired just weeks before he died.

Emily McLaughlin on the other hand had many serious health problems for most of the 80s and nearly died on several occasions. At one point, the role of Jessie was even recast with Aneta Corsaut. Her appearances were so infrequent, many believed she was on recurring, but in fact retained second billing after Beradino until she died. McLaughlin too made one last appearance weeks before she died of cancer. She shared it with Rachel Ames, Beradino, Charleson, & Stuart Damon.

Behind the scenes, Gloria insisted on a much faster pace. She brought in a new editing team and scenes became quicker (not as quick as what rushes through today, quick for that era). She would snap her fingers and say, "Pick up the pace." She changed the lighting, as she was amazed that Jessie Brewer had the exact same lighting as young ingenues on the show. She also redid the sets, having characters say that the hospital was being rebuilt. She junked a week or several weeks of already completed episodes as soon as she arrived, horrifying the suits, but she just didn't want to use any of that material. This is all from Chris Schemering's Soap Opera Encyclopedia.

Steve, Audrey, Jessie, Lee, and Gail did have less and less airtime (with Monty writing Lee and Gail out entirely around 1984 or 1985), although, as mentioned already, Emily McLaughlin was ill (the first time she almost died was in 1975 or 1976, which is when Aneta came in. By the time Gloria arrived Jessie had already stopped being a major character, with a lot of her long-suffering type stories being passed down to Diana Taylor. I think her last major story was the one where a con artist, Teddy Holmes, got involved with her niece, and was conning Jessie (this story became famous later mostly because Mark Hamill played her nephew).

saynotoursoap and romabriere, among others, also have some clips; if you want to see the earliest, MST3K played some of their episodes, one or two of them, to make fun of them.

    • Mick Savage was sooo unbearable. And more unbearable was the reaction from the female characters to him - they were acting like he is God's gift to women and sooo irresistible. To a point of unbelievable cringe.
    • Today was a short one. Only 33 minutes.  The ‘Part One’ graphic at the beginning was pretty interesting though. I didn’t expect them to do something like that.  I like how everything was focused around John and his family and friends. Again, the acting and the dialogue was very well done and well written. And I love that they were able to incorporate Drake’s, “swing for the fences” phrase into the script. It was nice seeing everyone interact with each other, especially characters who don’t often share scenes together. It felt like every character was part of a big family or community. Plus, an outdoor funeral in June makes a lot more sense than an outdoor funeral in December.  But yeah, it’s very, very strange that Will isn’t at the funeral, especially since we know that

I would much rather he had been there today. And, where’s Anna too? And Jack and Jennifer? What was the point of bringing them all back if they weren’t going to attend the funeral? I expected Steve to want to close down BlackPatch, though I’d rather he just retire and let Paul take it over. But I like that Kayla was there to comfort him. I wonder if he’s going to change his mind at some point.  It was nice seeing Shane again too. Now, he just needs to have more scenes with his son lol but I enjoyed seeing him comfort Marlena. I’m not really sure about his interaction with Cat though? Was it really necessary for this to happen now, at John’s funeral? They could’ve waited a little longer to introduce this story arc.  Btw, was Tate bleeding from his head in his first scene with Arianna?

    • This is wonderful! Thank you for posting this! I loved the first two seasons and never got to see the final season when they cancelled the DVD release. I've been hoping this popped up on streaming but no luck. Happy I'll finally get to see how it ended!

    • In case it is of interest to anyone here, I have digital copies (computer files, mp4 etc.) of all of the episodes. And, besides having the files they are all up on my usual video hosting site, acct name: shallotpeel, channel it is in: Primetime Soaps and file names like  Flamingo Road S1E15 Hurricane Flamingo Road was a primetime soap on NBC by Lorimar Productions. 2 seasons. 1980-1982. Morgan Fairchild, Barbara Rush. Developed by Rita Lakin.
    • Arguably DAYS OF OUR LIVES has been brilliant lately & definitely was last week. But, here I am with nitpick & technicalities. This was the only misstep but it was just a stupid thing that should have been caught. Deidre Hall as Marlena has this one problematic line, "It didn't matter how many identities you had, I always knew exactly who you were, you were the man who saved my life." - Marlena, DAYS, 6-2-25 Unfortunately the flashback closest to it was when Marlena was on the phone, terrified because she thought he was Stefano. Yes, it's true that the line is not accurate. There were many times when she did not feel the way she is claiming because of whatever was going on in story with his 'retconned to hell & back' identity & origin story. Does it keep the whole week from being called excellent? Nope.
