HOLIDAY MIRACLE: Prospect Park Back On Track To Revive AMC and OLTL

  • Member

WTF!!!!!

EXCLUSIVE: Here is a great holiday gift for soap fans: I’ve learned that Prospect Park has revived its plan to continue cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life To Live online. I hear the company behind USA hit Royal Pains has inked deals with SAG-AFTRA and DGA for the soaps’ production, eyed to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

Yes. And so are the dozens of actors writers and crew going back to work on OLTL and AMC and relying on the success of those ventures for future employment.

What are you saying? That that rests on a handful of characters?

Show me the receipts.

LOL!

But really, the whole point of promotion is to get potential customers to take an action of some kind - preferably one that can be measured in some way - whether that's sign up for a service, tune into a TV show, click on a website, etc... There's no action for people to take now so there's no point in dumping resources into promotion when the first priority needs to be production. "Coming soon!!" stuff works great for something like the new Star Trek movie where all you have to do is leak a poster image and millions of people start planning what they will do on opening day but this ain't Star Trek.

Easton, Howarth and Alderson being sidelined with pay for a few months (if that) while the details are worked out doesn't merit all the teeth gnashing and hand wringing on their behalf. I just can't muster enough f*cks.

Oh I don't even take issue with that. I'm just saying that everyone has a right to take preference in where they wish to be employed. Genie Francis was killed off of Loving just so ABCD could put her back on GH, which she was not happy with. The employment rate for actors is painfully low, an actor is going to want a job, period, and Genie begrudgingly went back to GH.

If you fucked up as royally as PP did last go round, you'd probably be shy about revealing too much too soon. Sometimes it's just best to keep your mouth shut. OTOH, I do agree with Chris that little bumper-like promos on hulu couldn't hurt. Not as specific as he was describing, but say Debbi and Darnell smiling and hugging in front of a white background, or just a slow zoom in on a preening Susan against said white background, "All My Children, coming soon to hulu..." That's enough to pique the interest of anyone who would even watch these shows. As dates become more definite and scenes are in the can, the promos could become more elaborate.

Not at all. I think there are many factors that will contribute to the success or failure of PP/Oltl/AMC. No single thing will define its success or failure, whichever the case may be. But they are fighting an uphill battle. And so many people just want to say they don't need "this" cannon. Or that F16. I think they should have every asset at their disposal. And I damn sure don't think they should give up anything they paid for that could even potentially be used to propel them in the future. And keep all those other people employed. And really keep OLTL alive, not just the pieces they thought worthy of the prize that is GH.

Yes, this is all I'm saying. I'm very flexible in terms of everything else, but I do feel with promo there can never be enough. If things start poorly, it'll be hard to rally people around. Even though they probably won't publicly release them, the numbers will be important to secure international TV deals and a cable network for the US, which is something I'm sure they eventually want. One positive thing is that they're finally using the Facebooks and Twitter accounts to try and build a buzz. That should've happened long ago though. CBS was airing promos for their new Stephen King show (which has NO cast and hasn't filmed one scene) during the Superbowl, not to mention Dallas which was doing promos a year in advance. I don't think expecting more promo is an outrageous demand.

Beyond promo, I'm very open with these shows. I want the writers to have the freedom to truly reboot them, add new families if they want, etc. This is why I don't so much care about the GH 3, because there are so many other alternatives and all of them are more interesting for a new show. Besides, this is an opportunity to truly modernize the soaps and do it the right way. I'm not concerned with sets looking the same, I just want the sets to look great. Same with the cast, you want a good number of familiar faces, but I wouldn't let that hold me back either. With the nuDallas one of the smartest things they've done is bring on a new family to rival the Ewing's and Barnes families. I don't want a total retread.

If he wasn't also already playing Caleb, I could sort of see the argument that Easton could get screwed over in this predicament because he was willing to sign on with OLTL 2.0 the first time, but I can't really be bothered to feel bad for either Howarth or Alderson here, regardless of how this shakes out, and I say this as a huge fan of Howarth's.

I mean, you people do understand that Howarth and Alderson both chose to be out of work over singing on with PP back in 2011, yes? You understand that they have only benefited from the fact that PP could not get their ducks in a row initially, right? It's not, like with Easton, a case of preserving jobs they would have had if PP had gotten OLTL going right after its ABC run ended.

I'm not at all faulting them for not choosing to continue on with OLTL originally or taking the opportunities that GH presented them. Like everyone else involved, I can only expect them to do what they feel is in their own best interests and the best interests of their families. But if any cast members were just so gosh darn brand-loyal as to morally "deserve" to be catered to, it's certainly not either of them. Howarth, in particular, has been coming and going from OLTL as he pleases for nearly two decades and I have no doubt in my mind that he would jump ship from GH just as quickly if the mood struck him when his contract is up. Which, again, is his prerogative. But come on now. A few actors wanting to have their cake and eat it too should not dictate who gets control of their characters (characters two of them had already freely given up playing because they wanted to be elsewhere), and I hope to God anyone who is arguing that it should never goes on a tear about upholding intellectual property rights in the future or else this planet will be crushed by the black hole of hypocrisy you'll surely create by doing so.

I couldn't ever possibly get tired of typing this, so once again, that's not what happened for Roger Howarth. He was in negotiations with PP up until the great collapse.

People just seem to ignore that ABCD cancelled OLTL and AMC in the first place. And in the case of OLTL they picked over the bones and took pieces they wanted to "keep alive" and threw the remaining carcass away. This all started because ABCD didn't value OLTL and AMC. And now I'm supposed to feel like ABCD is the injured party when somebody wants to take those shows and bring them to life and wants ALL the pieces, even after ABCD defined them as te only parts of OLTL "worthy" to live on. GMAFB.

Rumor also states that the first time around KA had a deal with PP to recur on OLTL as Starr when story called for it

That I can tell you is false.

Errol, any idea when this PP vs ABC thing will be over, I think it is out of control how long they have let it go on
