When did MAB jump the shark? Y&R

Definitely the chipmunk. I was glued to the screen throughout the fall of 2008, through the Kay/Marge story and then they did that crap and it went to hell from there with Adam terrorizing Ashley, Colleen's death, stunt casting, the numerous false deaths, etc.

The stunt casting has been horrible as well as the casting of characters we don't care about -- putting our other faves on the backburner.

I agree, Chipmunk story for me as well. I was enjoying Y&R up until that point, then chipmunk story started followed by Adam/Ashley gas-lighting story, etc I began to watch less and less.

The Ashley gaslighting was bad. I can still see Adam in that purple dress. Ridiculous!

Once the Chipmunk story/Adam tormenting Sharon and Ashley/Phillip is gay and faked his death zzzzz ... that's when I stoped watching. I enjoyed most of her early tenure and really enjoyed the Marge/Katherine story. I like that she brought back a lot of past favorites and somewhat mined history, but overall, the last few years have been a disaster. The cast is bloated with soap refugees who's characters are ill-defined and the rest of the cast are treated like jokes, save for a few. MAB also seems to hold grudges against actors (Case/Muhney) and lets it affect the writing. Sharon's destruction has been so painful to watch. And what's Jack's purpose anymore? Not to mention Victoria and Nicholas are pathetic shades of their former selves, who I could have seen go after Newman and Victoria used to be someone who could hold her own and fight back. I also hate how MAB writes Billy, and the way they let Billy Miller play him as some joke. Not to mention the ridiculous misuse of Olivia, Neil ... the terrible recastings of Diane and Malcolm. Ugh. Maura West deserved much better.

I like that she revisted Phyllis's past but it made everyone but Phyllis seem like a villain. Sigh.

I also resented the way she killed off Brad and Colleen, making it impossible for either character to be resurrected. Poor Traci. BTW, I can't remember who killed off John? Was it Latham or MAB? I think it was Latham but I just don't remember. That was also a dumb decision.

For me, that moment came when it seemed like entire episodes were centered around Victor and Sabrina traveling to art museums.

I wasn't sure when that ended, with LML or shortly after MAB started...?

When she was hired? That's when I last paid any mind to the show. But if I'm honest with myself, it was actually after the show decided to break apart Chloe from the Billy/Cane/Lily storyline.

God was that boring. Thank god they killed off that bore!

That too!

I don't like Cane/Lily anymore. They have become so boring. I posted before that the only place I'd ever in my life seen boring black people was on Y&R.

I would love to see Chloe and Chelsea become besties and keep things stirred up, if Chelsea stays.

Lawd have mercy! One of the most wretched ideas and was the end of Sharon for me (getting with your child's kidnapper is the lowest of the low). I would very much like for Case to be gone when I begin watching again. Sharon cannot be salvage, and there is no need in wasting time trying. She's done! 18 years is plenty and it's time to get rid of this wretched hobag. She is nothing to YR anymore.

I think part of what makes a soap good is redeeming the core characters who have gone off the rails. It can be done with good writing. I loved Michael's redemption, for example.

Phillip faked his death because he is gay. That was it for me.

Recasting Adam and giving him horrible stories, killing off Brad and Colleen and keeping Cane around didn't help things. Should I mention Jill being Lauren's sister?

Worst fan fic ever.

Characters have been let go while others I like less have stayed on... Cane, Genevieve, Sophia, Harmony... Glad Ricky and Daisy were killed off but it's not enough for me. I do love that it gave Paul and Nina more screen time.

I stopped watching for a while once Muhney came on as Adam and the big gay moment amounted to adjusting a tie.

I wasn't watching much during Shadam but I thought it was disgusting and insulting.

I didn't like Adam's seduction of Rafe. At all. I don't think the writers should have gone there. But they were just getting started with him...

Liz being killed off as a plot point.

That was so rushed that it didn't seem as sad as it should have (for me) as a from day #1 viewer.

I can't remember exactly when I tuned out of Y&R, it had to have been sometime after the whole Lauren/Sarah Smythe storyline. Victor & Sabrina was definitely a BORE (wasn't there one "location" shoot that was really just outside the studio doors overlooking the parking lot at CBS Studios?).

The thing that really keeps me from watching Y&R again full-time is that there are SO many new characters and SO many recasted younger characters. I can't even keep up with who's supposed to be whom, who's related to whom, who's romancing whom, etc. I only tune in to see the vets and sometimes, even they don't have a worthwhile story to watch (I like Neil, but hate any storyline I see him in as of late). Haters gonna hate, but I love Phyllis and anything surrounding her. The only time I roll my eyes and fast-forward is when she's in story with the young dumb ones like Daisy (that's her name right? That Yvonne Zima sleepwalking girl?)

I never thought I would get to a point where I don't enjoy MS' Phyllis anymore, but I am there. They have put her and Vic on too much at the expense of others.

You are spot on: there are too many new/young characters.

I FF any scene involving Genevieve, Cane/Lily, Devon, Neil/Sophia/Harmony every time and sometimes others.

I would love for Dru to come back and to see more scenes of Leslie as the primary attorney character on the show. (I also like Avery.) I wish I liked Heather more than I do because she is being portrayed by a former ATWT actress. I still miss ATWT and GL so much.

Soap refugees. Exactly. I think a better balance could have been made so that Y&R still looked like Y&R. I heard the present casting director was AMC's former CD but I don't know if that is true.

I have seen it happen so many times when an actor or an actress just didn't work and was quickly let go, yet how many times has Genevieve's character been retooled? She just does not fit in at Y&R, imo.

I think MAB liked Muhney and that is why Adam was never held accountable. I think she caters to Eric Braeden which is why Sharon and Victoria and Nikki and Jack have been reduced to what they are now. I like Billy but hated the speech he gave at Nikki and Jack's wedding. That was a WTH? moment. I haven't cared much for Nick since he bedded Phyllis and Avery within a matter of days.

The trouble started with Phillip's return and Colleen's death. Sarah/Daisy/Ryder was the final nail in the coffin.

I think it was when Muhney was recast as Adam. Not that recasting with Muhney caused the jump, but the things Muhney's Adam did and have done were deplorable.

Actually the cross-dressing/fetus burning thing was Chris Engen's Adam.

I beleive thats when we heard that Engen quit and MM was hired, presumably bc CE didnt want to play the material they had in store for Adam

According to wikipedia, Engen's last airdate was 6/24/09 and Muhney's first airdate was 6/25/09.

Ashley fell down the stairs and lost her baby 6-5-09, according to CBS recaps.

Adam's seduction of Rafe began on 6-26-09: "As Adam hides the wig and dress he used to impersonate Sabrina, he talks to Hope about how much of a disappointment he has been. Before Adam can hide the box, however, Rafe shows up at Adam’s door. Rafe confronts Adam about his suspicions. Adam panics when Rafe starts searching his room for evidence. Just as Rafe is about to discover Adam’s secrets, Adam does the only thing he can think of to stop him. Adam reaches out and touches Rafe’s face seductively and admits to Rafe that he has feelings for him."

I think there have been flashbacks of Muhney's Adam in the purple dress...

Patty killing Zapato. I haven't watched regularly since. Call me a crazy PETA person, but for me that was a low for the show. And I had enjoyed the softness that the dog brought to Victor.

And Phillip returning from the dead, which was ridiculous enough, but I was at least expecting some great scenes from Jess Walton and we got NONE of that.
