Your Soaps's Last Big Shindig

A couple of the posts have mentioned how budget problems affect the quality of soaps. This is never more apparent than at trials, weddings, parties and funerals. I'll never forget how Pillar Of The Community Holden Snyder "died" on ATWT and about seven people showed up at his service.

This makes me long for the Days of Extravagance on soaps. So, two questions:

1) What was the LAST big occasion you remember on your favorite soap and

2) What was the most lavish occasion EVER on your favorite soap?

The last good party GH had was the Black and White Ball.

The most lavish for GH? Probably Luke and Laura's wedding.

AW's last big event was the Lumina ball in late 1998, which had the entire cast, and fancy costumes. I don't think that would be made today.

I guess their biggest event in terms of budget would probably be their 80's parties.

The last "big" shindig on ATWT where you definitely didn't feel hemmed in or ask why isn't so-and-so there? was Jake and Molly's wedding in 2001. There were other well-dressed weddings, balls, and parties (not to mention the occassional "special" themed episode) but that was the last time I remember how fabulous everything looked and the multiple HUGE sets.

The most lavish? My guess would be Steve and Betsy's wedding. Some of the AIDS balls in the late '80's-early - '90's were nice too.

I guess Days' was the Horton Square Opening/Return of the vets here to save the show! And it failed, miserably.

The last one Days did that I enjoyed? Oh man... I honestly can not remember one from the past 5 years or so.

As for the most Lavish one ever, i suppose it would be the massacre at gret's party.

Yes the Coronation Madsacre was one the best soap event EVER!

I have to echo the point about DAYS' Coronation Massacre, that was lavish, over the top and dramatic. Every single major cast member was there and it drove at least a year of storyline.

Even back in the DAYS when they had most of their cast having dinner at the Tuscany restaurant it was extravagent.

I loved the masquerade ball they had on GL back in 1999 when Reva was playing princess and Josh and the fellas "rescued her". The costumes were grand, the set was HUGE and multi-leveled, and it all looked very impressive. The only thing you had to ignore was when Josh and the guys were on location (in Puerto Rico) and they were using ropes and fancy-schmancy gear to climb the walls surrounding the palace, and then the camera foolishly zoomed out and revealed that they could've easily just walked around the wall. It was like "Wait, WTF? Did I really just see that?"

One of my favorite lavish gatherings on DAYS was Jennifer & Peter's wedding in Aremid in November 1995.
