Members Marco Dane
From TV Media Insights.com I am still hearing rumors of ABC testing General Hospital in primetime this summer. Not sure how many times per week. Would you watch?
Members quartermainefan
GH could tap into its bench for actors who could handle this. They would need a known commodity like Emma Samms, Constance Towers covering head bitch duties, and they would need Luke and Laura. It will not work with Sonny and all the other regulars. No one is impressed by Maurice Benard and Steve Burton except the diehard.
Members AMCHistory
The stories would have to have an element of being "Self-contained" to give them a more primetime feel. The episode needs to provide some level of pay-off, while building towards the larger story resolution that would happen at the end of the series of Primetime episodes, or back in daytime. Members Marco Dane
I can see them doing a two hour movie on the Search and Return of "Robin" ala "The Search for Spock" LOL
Members reallyhateskateonlost
They did this way back when with Twist of Fate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnxfpPMvFXI
Members marceline
They'd really have to retool it. I kind of wish they give it a shot. The only way to get any kind of innovation will be to force the issue. Making a soap competitive in primetime might be the jolt that the genre needs. Members Marco Dane
Has anyone seen the primetime ep of OLTL on YouTube? Did AMC do a primetime ep?
Members quartermainefan
Twist Of Fate was pretty dull though. They would just need to be an ongoing nighttime soap and they would have to get new writers who realize that in a less than 5x a week show every episode needs drama and some sort of cliffhanger, and high drama. Members VirginiaHamilton
Pretty much. As you suggested, the only way that GH may ever get greenlit for primetime (and I stress the may) is the actual big names (like the aforementioned Emma Samms) are brought in. Members Darn
Wasn't the primetime ep of OLTL just a regular episode that they put on during primetime because it got bumped during the day? Or something like that. It involved Georgie Phillips, right? ETA: Yeah it was this episode Please register in order to view this content . I just can't remember the circumstances behind it. Dammit. Webmaster Errol Posted April 10, 2012 Webmaster Share Posted April 10, 2012 IIRC it was a promoted primetime special airing on a Thursday night around the time of one of the soaps anniversaries. The only soaps that I recall in my lifetime that ever aired in primetime were General Hospital, Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless and Sunset Beach (maybe Passions?). I don't recall All My Children getting a special airing in primetime, at least not in the last 15-20 years. Anyone know?
Members Darn
This is from 98 which was OLTL's 30th anniversary. And it likely aired in July (the 15th is OLTL's anniversary) since all the primetime shows are on hiatus. Thanks, Errol!
Members marceline
Yet it was definitely in the summer. I faked food poisoning at my company retreat so I could back to my hotel room to watch it.
Members AMCHistory
The only primetime special AMC got was the 25th Anniversary retrospective with Carol Burnett that was excellently done. The guest list was amazing for being able to lock-in Kim Delaney and Peter Bergman.
