Members DRW50
You think the Liam/Hope/Steffy was B&B's best or most consistent stories ever? Even people who enjoyed the story seemed confused as to why Steffy wanted Liam, and felt Liam was destroyed as a character. I don't think the story was very good. I think pretty location shoots and less competition helped their ratings. The longer the story has gone on the lower ratings have fallen. As long as B&B believes that revolving door romances and nonexistent characters will be their salvation they will continue to lose viewers. Members JackPeyton
I think in my 12 year history of the show, it was one of the best long term stories, absolutely. the dynamics and character involvement were all over the place, in a good way. it took the basic plot - bad girl out to take a man from the good girl - and plays it straight up as it should be. it mixed in vets and used history to drive it. why did steffy want liam was the weakest part of the story, absolutely, but it didnt really matter because she did want him and she want for him. the ratings started to fall when the story should have ended - shortly after aspen - because they are desperate and have no idea what to do now. Members DRW50
12 years? I can see what you mean now. For me B&B's best years were 1987-1994 or so, and then some strong stuff at the turn of the century. Compared to the rest I see that the L/H/S story would be good. I think that overall the story was a little too much about tropes - needy bad girl, cold good girl, dumbass guy. I guess it did work there but Brad Bell is just so bad at developing characters, I don't know what he will do for followup. B&B has so much history to use, instead of just doing things like turning the Logan family into desperate whores and having Stephanie drown the mother. Members JaneAusten
I don't have an issue with the cuts .B&B has too big a cast and these days you can't keep expensive talent around to sit.At least its not stunt money like some of the other shows and they seem interested in finally transitioning the canvas. 25 years of brooke/ridge/taylor is enough. And I don't mind them in stories supporting the younger cast. Marlena on Days has been best used in this capacity. And I'll go on record since there is some feeling no one likes Hope and Liam that I do. This last story has not been good for Liam and its gone on too long, but moving on from this current story will help. I am excited about seeing Jacob Young get story. Members Cheap21
no there isnt a problem with that. The problem is that the younger cast is the ONLY story on the show and has been for quite a while. You bring up Days but imagine if not too long ago, the entire show every day was set around Melanie, Chad and Abby with everyone and their mama discussing them. Every single character talks about Hope/Liam/Steffy with the exception of the 2 day conclusion of the Bridget/Owen/Jackie. There is literally no balance at all. We dont need every older character supporting the younger cast. Thats beyond ridiculous. They need to go back to actually featuring stories revolving around the older characters and not just some teases which amount to nothing like the Amber/Rick fashion story, Taylor/Thorne seizing power, Bill taking over Spectra, etc... Members JaneAusten
I get that and I am hoping that theres a tad more balance and a better job with second or third tier stories but is it diff than the former triangle eating so much airtime and being the center? GH is still all about Sonny and Jason even if they aren't on screen, 90% of Days up until the reset was Sami/EJ/Rafe/Nicole. Is B&B really that different? Members Cheap21
YES! None of those shows even compare to GH or Days. Jason has his brain damage story right now and Sonny has his feud with the Zacharas/Kate's mental issues. Theres also several other stories on the show besides those two and not every single character is wrapped up in those stories. Your argument may have been more valid a few years ago when the show was high on the Mob Four. Its alot more balanced these days. That quad on Days was heavy early last year but there was still plenty outside of that. Chloe's downward spiral/prostitution, Victor/Maggie's romance, Daniel and Jen, Carly's addiction, Vivian's revenge/Brady taking over Titan, Melanie and Dario's romance, Chad's paternity....90% of the show wasnt about the quad. There was alot going on besides them. On B&B literally everything is about Hope's viriginity
Members JaneAusten
Im just justifying the nonstop focus on Hopes virginity its assinine what I am interested in is this new set of stories and perhaps giving some other younger castmembers something to do other than Hope and Steffy drama along with the vet characters remaining. With BB you have to take a lot with a GoS.
Members edgeofnik
It's time for the "Brooke" scandals to be passed to "Hope," who has done everything she can to avoid being like her trashy mother. I think this is a good move, Hope has been blinded by lust (mistaken it for love) and when she wakes up, she'll realize that she has given up her values. Members Gray Bunny
Brandon Beemer is considered old??
Members Cheap21
He's an older cast member meaning he isnt new. I beleive thats the context that the writer was referring to as that was listed after mentioning the addition of new character, Caroline
Members P.J.
This is kind of BS---B&B has never been truly multi-generational in the first place. It's bread and butter has always been Brooke/Ridge/Taylor(Caroline). And the focus has always been on their generation---whether it was Thorne/Macy or the rest of their assorted siblings in the earlier years. They've fallen flat on their asses for years trying to establish a younger "core" with originalKatie, Rick/Amber/CJ, Bridget, Dylan/Jessica, whoever LaCafgna played, Pheebs, Thomas, and probably half a dozen others I've forgotten. Matula/Clifton/JMW are arguably the most viable trio B&B's had since B/R/T, and it's more by default than anything else they are the "future" of B&B. They don't really have a choice but to focus on this generation since they've failed to grow any of the others. It's a mistake, but it's been Bell's M.O. since he took over. I guess this is the only cofirmation we'll get of Flannery's semi-retirement, then?
Members Ben
In my 15/16 years of - on-off - watching this show, I've seen it decline in the number of stories it has been able to tell. It used to be able to run several storylines concurrently, with one story taking centre stage and a couple of others running as sub-plots. But now they don't seem to be able to have such balance any more, even though they house a large cast, they struggle to utilize 90% of them. And I don't understand why that is. It is a myth that young people like watching young people, when in reality the majority are more interested in the older characters. B/R/T have eaten up the show for years, and it is time they took a back seat, but even in their day Stephanie and Eric had story that didn't always involve B/R/T, so why is BB confining Brooke & Ridge to time chatting about their daughters sex lives? Anyone would think that S/L/H were the only 20 somethings on the show, when in fact they have Amber, Marcus, Dayzee, to play with, not to mention Bill, Katie, Thorne, Taylor, Felicia who could all use a decent sub-plot away from S/L/H. Bringing in a new character to fill space that could and should be used by one of their existing characters is silly; if BB has no intention of using Amber/Marcus/Dayzee, then why not cut them? It's a waste to simply have them pop up for the odd 2 day story or acting as day players when they have all the 40+ characters for that. Also, if Jacob Young was not playing Rick, I doubt BB would be so eager to keep him in story, whether in his own or as a support. So, while moving Brooke & Ridge forward is a good move, skewing so far young, not so much, IMO. Carl: Since I've picked the show back up in January, Eric has only made, like, 2 appearances, so I think they treat him like he's recurring anyway. I also preferred Owen over Thomas, who is a lot more dynamical. They could do a lot more with their younger set that what are doing; everything seems so boxed in.
