Most miscast soap roles

Annie Parisse as Julia - she was too neurotic and twitchy to be a heroine, and she had no chemistry with Michael Park. Her turn to being a psycho was OTT and embarrassing. She would have been suited to roles like Quint's old girlfriend/frenemy Helena Manzini on GL.

Ironically, when they drew up the list of potential replacements for Beverlee McKinsey as Alex, Marj Dusay was the one most everyone agreed would make a good successor.

Of course, I also remember thinking Judith McConnell would've made a good Alex, too.

Judith would have been a great Alex.

To be fair to Marj, she played Alex as written. Beverlee fought the writing, which was, aside from some nicely crafted monologues and one-liners, very poor for Alex as soon as JFP arrived. JFP was the death of Alexandra. Beverlee knew it, and wisely bailed.

*snort* Here I thought I'd get reamed over by a Nuke fan first. I guess I lost that bet.

Weirdest recast: Randolph Mantooth as Hal on ATWT. Just Mantooth's physical presence was a disconnect with who Hal was---a regular "everyman". I honestly can't even remember what Mantooth's Hal ever did.

If I had had my druthers:

Alexandra Spaulding von Halkein? Judith McConnell.

Amanda Spaulding? Nancy Lee Grahn.

Alan Spaulding? Nicolas Coster. (SaBa and Lionel/Sophia fans would have had a field day w/ that one, lol!)

Alan-Michael Spaulding? Rick Hearst (or Carl T. Evans, if we could have had him back)

Add GA's Phillip to that bunch, and you would have had a clan to rival the Quartermaines on GH.

Mantooth believably played the average joe on Loving/The City (at least after rewrites) but Hal should never have been recast. Ben was the character. It was because of him that Hal became more than a bit player.

I guess you could also say Toby Poser as Amanda, although she did a good job with the crap they gave her.

I don't know what GH had in mind when they cast the various Tom Hardy actors but they always seem weak or superfluous. When Matt Ashford came on there was not as much edge as I would have expected, considering he'd been doing a lot of difficult work in Africa, was supposed to have trauma, etc. If anything he seemed very fey.

But I LOVED Toby Poser's Amanda!!! So camp it was like she sprang out of the head of Reilly himself. I know its bad but I loved the Amanda/Alex sparring though there was no reason for it, Amanda never did anything to Alex so it made Alex once again look like a schreeching shrew. However, they did give Marj good one liners and she knows how to deliver them like a pro. And Carl I know you liked the first Amanda, but I HATED her, so whiney, so pale, so bland, so annoying. She was like Marland's template for Lily...poor little rich girl. Most likely Poser with her exotic looks would have been better cast as Vicki Spaulding...though of course it would have been Vicki Spaulding funneled through "Girls Gone Wild," or Diane Ballards illegit daughter, come back to make the Spauldings pay, tricking Alan into the sack, Alex hating her...okay, retread of when Blake first came to town but....

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
