I was going to post this in the soap hoppers thread but as slick won't be updating there anymore I wanted to respect his thread and not dump links in it.

John Capodice - IMDb

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/john-capodice-dead-ace-ventura-general-hospital-1236097675/

His biggest soap credit was on GH as Lois' father, Carmine.

I wonder how much they de-aged Carmine when he came back this past year. Not sure how old George Russo is.

It’s the way the show is still being shot too. Those rapid zoom in closeups that are so signature to Monty’s style fade away the longer Riche is there for more subtle versions.

It is disorienting for me to watch this era out of context. The Riche style drama, but still the old opening and she hadn’t updated the hospital and nurses hub to the pale pink colors yet. But it’s so clearly not like the show had been for over a decade too.

TBH, I never cared for the "Faces of the Heart" opening.  I didn't think it was "high energy" enough for a show that was all about energy.  Plus, the first time I saw the opening, with the visuals and the safe-for-the-'90's music, I thought, "This is gonna look even more dated than the old opening five years from now."  And in a way, it IS dated, although it certainly holds up better than the openings that have come afterward.

IMO, all Wendy Riche needed to do was to film a new shot of an ambulance speeding toward the hospital and maybe get a new arrangement for the Urbont theme.  Otherwise, just leave the sequence as is.

I think it's ironic how the larger our TV screens have become, the more reticent GH, DAYS and Y&R are to do those intense close-ups that they used to be known for.  Maybe they're afraid HD will expose all that cosmetic surgery to the light of day, lol?

I think the FOTH opening is all but timeless, especially now when sexy sax is back in in a kind of retro way. I'd happily redo it today in a hot second. But if they don't have the money I'd just say find a happy medium - do something like the brief ambulance opening but with a quick riff on FOTH as the theme over that. Maybe toss in some heads/characters seen over or standing around the hospital, a la some British soap openings. 10-15 seconds and done.

I still enjoy the overlapping opening notes and dissolve into the opening of FOTH, and I hate it when uploaders cut it. I love it on the AMC opening of the same era too, the falling pictures.

They could easily update the speeding ambulance and old theme. It would be quick, and that also fits how FV cuts up the show. Anything to get rid of the incredibly tacky photo flip they have now. Even photos of an ambulance flipping and getting closer to the screen with the hospital behind it would be better than the various headshots that just sit there.

I loved the original FOH opening.  I guess it could be considered dated, but I would take it back today.  I disliked the one after where the men were all sitting in the chairs and by the end like half of them were dead but still in the opening.

This was the last halfway decent opening and I think it looks cool even if I don't understand why the ambulance at the end is about to run someone down.

I am sure it's much too expensive for today's budget though.

This one looked cheap as hell to me, lol. All the cheesy background images of Wyndemere, etc. made me think half the cast was living in the vampire castle from Big Bad Beetleborgs. But it was still better than the Powerpoint slides featuring every guest player or random toddler Frank has taken a shine to. Why is 6 year old Wiley in the opening, Frank??

I would just redo FOTH largely as it was with a few visual updates, and probably not even change the Dave Koz music. It's back in again. Do not use the rock remix from here, which was dated even by the time this slow opening came along.

Haha!  I liked it.  The graphics were a little strange and didn't correlate to the characters sometimes, but I appreciate the names of the characters and actors on there.  Honestly, I could use that now for frame of reference for this huge cast we have today.

This current opening feels like I going to get a seizure while watching the bright pictures flash by.

I am all for redoing FOTH wit Dave Koz's version.  It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to replicate or that difficult to add or subtract a character either.

I didn't think you needed both character and actor names. One or the other at best, if at all. Every time I saw both I thought 'they really think we're deeply stupid.' And it looked messy.

I also found it awkward when they added character names to the last FOTH openings near the end of its run when Frons took over ABCD. I think OLTL may have tried this briefly at the same time, then dropped it.

Characters names are the only thing relevant so I'd drop the actor name if it were me.  That's what end credits are for, but I think other soaps were doing actors names in the opening so GH just followed suit.

I'll have to look up the FOTH opening with names.  I am having a hard time picturing it right now.

ETA-I just looked at the 2004 opening with the names.  It doesn't bother me.  The fact they use a PR location scenes from 10 years ago and the same couples insert with different couples make it feel like a lazy update though.

    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
