AMC and OLTL Canceled!

SOD tend to go the way the wind blows most of the time. I've very rarely see them pander a stupid storyline, cause they know the shows are their bread & butter.

Mopst Bianca fans don't seem to gung ho on this either. It didn't work with NotLesbian Reese, why would it work with Marissa, who's not even been shown to swing both ways?

Reese was two years ago, another HW, and very different circumstances for the show. There's no reason why Agnes and Lorraine, two very capable writers, can't fashion a good short-term story that starts off Bianca and Marissa as a couple. I'm not saying they need to be together under one roof with the kids making Hamburger Helper for dinner with Melissa Etheridge rockin' out on the under-cabinet kitchen radio. But start this thing off. All they need is one late night -- and they don't even need to be drunk -- where they learn more about each other on a deeper level. That night ends with a kiss, but instead of the angst that usually goes with that type of story, they're both okay with it. And they spend more time with each other as the weeks go on, and by the end, they decide to become a couple.

Now I tend to write stories in my head in ways that would never happen on screen, but I want to believe that they'll do something with these two characters.

And Jamey with him. They both worked overtime over the last year to "save" OLTL by demonizing AMC (and GH) and they're still at it. They don't care about the genre, the care about OLTL. And that wouldn't bother me if they would stop pretending to give a damn about AMC.

Do they even pretend anymore? I listened to that "big" podcast that was supposed to be "really heavy." I don't have to tell you what the only big, heavy thing about the podcast was. But all of the "I can't believe they're cancelling OLTL at the same time as AMC!!" annoys the sh!t out of me. Get outta here. You thought they were going to save OLTL over AMC? And now people are all "But why on earth would AMC get another chance!??!" They thought I was playin' when I told them AMC's name is bigger, its profile is higher, its place on the alphabetical list of lists is closer to "A" than OLTL's is. They thought I was trippin'.

I think any profit these shows generate will be flat, and as the costs of a network go up, the profits won't increase. These shows aren't being made to make money, they're being made on the cheap, and if that is the only reason for their creation, then everything about them is probably going to stagnate. If it's only about saving money, and never about making money, then ABC will always demand cheapness above any possible viewer interest. Ultimately I think they will just give up on daytime programming altogether, and again trot out the excuses blaming everyone but themselves.

There's also the usual ABC mismanagement. If The Revolution is in such chaos that they had to extend OLTL's exit by several months, then isn't the show already costing them money? And those problems probably aren't going to go away either.

Totally agreed, but I think that's prob obvious to most of us--even without the agenda of wanting the soaps on the air. They're quick fixes for quick money and, even less so than The Talk and (ha!) LEt's Make a Deal redux, they seem to be created with absolutely zero thought of any longevity. But maybe that makes sense too--to just keep putting on uber cheap programming until daytime inevitably completely dies off.

I doubt it would have made a difference with cancellation, but I think more honest criticism of OLTL might have helped the show from bleeding so many viewers in 2009 and 2010 - I remember when the hellish KAD saga, which trashed one of OLTL's best and most acclaimed stories, was going on, DC said the only bad thing on the show was Stacey.

Instead of just supporting the show they love, Nelson, Jamey and others chose to trash AMC because they thought that anything good that happened to AMC came at OLTL's expense. I have no doubt that they'll spend the next year gunning for GH and blaming them for the fact OLTL got canceled.

Soap opera fans hope the Hershey Co. will help them restore 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live'

Soap opera fans are a passionate group, and they aren't happy about ABC canceling "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." They contacted the Hershey Co., requesting the company stop advertising on ABC to support their cause.

Right after Cheryl King heard her favorite shows would be canceled last week, she found other fans on Facebook. They've joined together with plans to boycott, picket, call and e-mail ABC and its advertisers in hopes of getting the shows reinstated. King lives in Fairview Twp., where she started watching "One Life to Live" with her mother 30 years ago.

Different types of Hershey chocolate bars are seen on a shelf in a Pittsburgh store.

Wednesday fans targeted the Hershey Co., calling, e-mailing and writing on its Facebook page, asking the Derry Twp. company to stop advertising on ABC.

The Hershey Co. would not discuss or acknowledge any contact. "I don't have any information to share on consumer contacts today," said spokesman Kirk Saville. "I can tell you we take consumer response seriously."

He wouldn't say whether the company would evaluate their advertising outlets. "Hershey will continue to advertise that most effectively reach our target consumers," he said.

But fans believe Hershey will side with them.

"We are moms and grandmoms and the people making the Easter basket," said Deanna Paige Uranga. "We are the people that buy Hershey. So they need to show us that they value us." Uranga lives in Los Angeles and she set up Rally for AMC and OLTL on Facebook 15 minutes after she heard about ABC canceling her favorite shows.

After soap fans deluged Hoover with messages Sunday, the company announced Monday it will no longer advertise on ABC.

I fell out of watching AMC right around the time the Janet/Natalie imposter story was heating up (had to go back to school) so it's been awhile since I tuned into the show, but even I was completely turned off over the dismissive coverage of the AMC rumors. Talk about mutually assured destruction.

Of course they do, I even saw people posting on Hershey's FB page saying Hershey's was *thisclose* to dropping their advertising with ABC, and since they never said that, I basically told people to stop putting words in their mouths.

Ugh all this crap is making soap fans in general look bad and nuts

Well it definitely wouldn't have made a difference with cancellation if Frons said they made the decision to cancel OLTL over a year ago in that interview with Nikki Finke (I think the decision was made even longer than that, they just couldn't find a viable solution to replace it with that tested well enough - Aisha Tyler and Tori Spelling)

I totally agree.

Many fan groups tend to do stuff like this - or much worse- not just soap fans. I don't think most people would even notice the story.

I saw some people saying that on twitter too about various companies. I agree, Just cause they're taking your calls don't mean they are "this close" to pulling a Hoover. Saying stuff like that just gets people's hopes dashed when it doesn't come true.
