Recasts

It's tough to say, because it didn't seem like Holly took off until Maureen's second run, but I would probably agree with you, as I think there was a perfect mating of artist and character.

Don't you think Lynn looks like Kathleen Cullen?

I remember Maureen said that Lynn used to show up onset early in her run and watch her film scenes, and this would be upsetting, as she [Maureen] thought she might be getting the chop.

I can't watch that clip because I'm at work, but I'm confused. I never knew Betsy returned in 1991. So Betsy was played by Meg Ryan, Lindsay Frost and then the short recast in 91 then Jordan Baker in 1994? How was she in 1994? Was it a total bust?

I've never seen Lynn Deerfield' Holly, but I can't imagine anyone other than Maureen Garrett in the role. Garrett was da bomb and one of the most underrated actresses of all time. She's so touchingly subtle and understated in her performances. None of that obnoxiously showy "LOOK AT ME" style of acting that characterizes so many daytime actresses, and never a false note. Pam Long never intended to bring Holly back to the canvass full time in 1988, I think it was. They brought her on for a Christmas episode, I think, just to give some historical perspective to Christina-Blake, who'd recently been brought back. Pam has said that she saw Garrett on screen in that episode, fell in love with her, and signed her to contract.

I agree with you about Maureen. GL had a more diverse field of women than any other soap, outside of AMC, in the late 80s and early 90s, and Maureen was so unique, especially for daytime. Vulnerable, yet mature, very womanly, sexy, but understated. Classic yet modern.

Her Holly did seem much more low-key and angst-ridden in the first run, so perhaps Deerfield was more like that.

Okay I watched that and it was just a sea of weird recasts. I'm guessing the blonde talking to Kim was either Frannie or Sabrina and she was *such* a shift from Julianne Moore. Now I'm intruiged. She doesn't seem to have the same sort of gravitas. Smiled too much for me. Reminded me of a combination of Nicole Forrester and Yvonna Perry in looks. And that Betsy was so miscast. Was she brought back only for a funeral? If so, it was foolish to recast. They should've just said she couldn't make it if Lindsay Frost didn't want to return.

If there is any daytime actress that should have won an Emmy, it's Maureen Garrett.

I was drawn to her immediately when I started watching GL. She wasn't a scenery chewer and knew when to give the right amount of herself in her scenes. Very few actresses like that come along in daytime. No matter how horrible the material could be, she did her best to make sense of it and always gave her best.

I thought Mary Ellen Stuart was very good as Frannie - she had a perky all-American look that Frannie had before Julianne Moore, yet she also had some of the sensitivity and weariness of Julianne's Frannie. She was smiling here because she was happy about finding love, but she was unhappy enough at other times.

I think recasting Betsy, even for the one or two episodes, was important, because Betsy shared a lot of story with Ellen and David for years after their daughters were written out of the show.

I also think Mary Ellen Stuart was a very good Frannie Hughes. She had a tough act to follow with Julianne Moore, but she did great. One of the scenes I will always remember her for was that time she was trapped on the ski mountain cable car with Daryl Crawford (Rex Smith). I was on the edge of my seat!

Had it ended with Darryl being revealed as Carolyn's killer, which I suspect had been Marland's intent at the outset, it would've made a helluva climax to a nail-biting whodunit. Unfortunately, it ended up being almost anti-climactic, as he turned out not to be the killer; and worse, the "Who Killed Carolyn Crawford?" mystery kept on going (and going) until pretty much everyone had forgotten or cared about it.
