NEW YORK, N.Y. --

Veteran broadcaster Regis Philbin says he’s retiring from his weekday talk show.

Regis, 79, made the announcement at the start of Tuesday morning’s “Live With Regis and Kelly,” which he has hosted for a quarter-century, most recently sharing hosting duties with Kelly Ripa.

Philbin said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer, but he didn’t specify a departure date.

I think Regis was best with Kathie Lee (Kelly is too much, and I can't stand him as a game show host), but I still hate to see him leave his show. It was such a constant presence in the homes of a lot of people I loved who sadly are no longer here.

Are you serious? Kelly is FAR LESS obnoxious than Kathie Lee. I think his chemistry with Kelly is on-target.

ABC/Buena Vista can't give it a full season to find his replacement, like they did when Kathie Lee left. I think they really have to find a permanent replacement now. Luckily, they've had a guest co-host about twice every other week this season. I bet Anderson Cooper regrets signing that deal for his own show.

@Stiletto...Frons will move "Live" to L.A. :P

I know! And I was sitting there watching that clip last night thinking, "Aww, 'member when I used to get up at a decent hour and watch them? I should start doing that again." And only hours later... It's funny because he was talking about spending time in FL and how he always checks on the weather in NY, and just a few hours ago on Access Hollywood they were interviewing Kathie Lee and she was saying how Regis will probably want to spend some more time in warmer weather. Oh, and I also agree that Kelly has nothing on KL in terms of annoyingness. Just watching her on Access, she was a pain in the butt to interview, long-winded and impossible to cut into for the sake of moving along the segment.

Ugh, Regis is VERY hard to replace. CM would love to land that gig, but HELLZ no I say, oh my word, that would be a travesty. I'd say a big no to the CM and Mario Lopez types (and Mark for that matter!). People like Tom Bergeron are too corny, people like Anderson Cooper are too cynical. It's sad, but I have a much easier time coming up with names I *wouldn't* want  (Mario Cantone, Walt Wiley, Clay "smell my hand" Aiken...). They're a little too slick, but George Hamilton was a good talk show host when he and Alana had a show, and Ted Danson has a similar charming quality but I don't see that happening. John O'Hurley might be nice. The thing is, a big part of the charm of the duo was KL and Kelly making fun of old Reeeeege, can't be somebody too polished.

You can't replace Regis because everyone who came after him has tried their best to be the blandest thing under the sun, while he honed this persona of being perpetually exasperated. Chuck Woolery? Pat Sajak? Just think of all the game show hosts and which one of them had any personality? And then in the talk show world you have even less choices.

Cameron Mathison is a pleasant, personable mannequin, which means he does not contrast with ultra perky Kelly.

    • We're getting an actual personality and flaws for Ashley... so it's a good start.  I'm guessing that Derek is her first serious relationship and I think she's falling out of love with Derek.. just hasn't accepted that realization as of yet. I agree that the show was diving headfirst into an Andre/Ashley pairing in the first handful of episodes, but they backed off of it and I have two theories: - Andre/Dani had a rapport/chemistry.  Probably more so than MVJ or the writers anticipated so the show is probably exploring that avenue. - Based on the character template that Ashley was created from... having her stray with Andre would have been out of character and caused the audience to hate her so the show is now weaving in reasons why Ashley might be looking Andres way (i.e. grass is greener on the other side, inexperience, Derek being too basic/vanilla).
    • Has anyone watched the Texas reunion interview? I haven't gotten to it yet although it'll probably mean more to the people who watched the show at the time.
    • Or, they could have recast the role and written the character better. Maybe too much to expect, but it was a choice. Surprised they never did. Was Raines ever popular? Wait. Wait. WAIT! THEY RETCONNED THAT AGAIN????
    • Hope you're feeling better @slick jones Came across another entry for House Jameson.  Unknown role on Guiding Light, 1958.
    • Greece, France and Luxembourg were my three clear favourites. I think Greece especially had a phenomenal staging. So beautiful. And Klavdia sang fantastic.

France also had beautiful staging and Louane sang her heart out. Finally Luxembourg, who had a vastly improved stage show compared to the national final, and I loved the nod to France Gall on the little tv screen in the dollhouse.
    • LOL - literally just added an edit to my post, because as I'm watching live right now, Dahlia is swimming in the pool alone and there is Marcus.  So annoying. And Phillip just revealed himself to Rick. I have to stop watching now, but curious to see how those interactions go!
    •   LOL.  I realized this week's Lope montage also omitted the Paris remote Lope scenes with Kim Matula. I mean, they repeat stuff over and over and over. I have unintentionally memorized B&B scenes that I barely watched --- because it was repeated in dialogue and immediate flashbacks in following episodes over and over and over.  Yet somehow Brad thinks viewers (even casual views like myself) wouldn't notice the glaring omissions in the montage?  or as dragonflies said, the montage using Lope scenes that happened during the Steam marriage?
    • Well, you wont be happy at all because I think Marcus of all people shows up..you know they have to have a scene were Dahlia is swimming and Marcus joins her..despite the fact that he is a decade older then her. You could tell they were trying to make them the next big thing but then, just dropped it.  The whole wedding was also one of the reason McLaibey was so short term.
    • I would have bought it if Ed/Rick/Michelle were all there, but 1) Ed said he couldn't go because he had to work, to which even someone highlighted that he's chief of staff and could easily go if he wanted; 2) Michelle got on the plane with Rick to go, but J showed up and the Spaulding's kicked him off because why would they want another random teenager to go, so Michelle ran off the plane after him and Rick just let her go (haha, it was kind of dumb); and 3) Rick and A-M have barely said 2 words to each other in the 15 months I've been watching so far, so it was weird he's now just by himself with the Spauldings/Coopers.   But I know now why they're doing this, Rick is clearly there because Phillip has shown up. Very plot-driven, but at least I’m getting old flashbacks of Rick/Phillip during this.  Slight correction - Ed never showed up on the plane, just Rick and Michelle.  Ed had already made the decision he wasn't going. Once 'Slutchelle' (haha!) ran off, I thought it was so weird that Rick either didn't run off after her, or didn't call from the plane to tell Ed. It was only when Blake called Rick, who happened to be with Ed at the hospital, that he happened to tell Ed, in midair, "oh hey, you may want to go find Michelle, she ran off" hahaha. Yeah, I get that being a location shoot, they had to minimize the number of people, but to have Dahlia there over Bridget still irks me. I get it, at this point, Bridget wouldn't have any connections to any of the people there outside of Lucy, just still hurts. ETA: Ugh, and now Marcus shows up!
