can I choose #3, none of the above?

Hahaha, yes!

In hindsight, Ashley should have been rested from Brenda Epperson 1995 departure until Eileen Davidson 1999 return.

I might have waited even longer as I think Ashley's stories under EB's return were horrible.

Anyway, going back to Shattuck, it tells you just how much the show was already struggling that they would so shoddily cast a role which, even if she'd been downgraded during Brenda's run, should have been central to the canvas. Other than being Ronn Moss' wife there was no reason to hire Shattuck, unless they were a big fan of the softcore movie she made with Andrew Stevens and Morgan Fairchild.

At least Sarah Aldrich later did good work on Port Charles, but they recast Victoria much too quickly after Heather Tom left, especially since Victoria wasn't exactly heavy in story.

Janice Lynde's NBC sitcom pilot 'Roxy Page' finally aired Mon Sept 6 1976.

Up against a Rhoda rpt on CBS and Viva Valdez on ABC a short run comedy that was played over Summer.

With Janice Lynde, Leslie Ackerman, Jeff Corey.

Comedy pilot about an aspiring Broadway star who, in addition to auditions and rehearsals, must cope with a volatile Armenian family which has other plans for her life.

I can't find the pilot anywhere, but the opening credits are available. They are very...of that era.

IMDB credits Ethel and Mel Brez as writers on this.

Totally agree - they brought Ashley back way too soon. Should’ve let her stay in Paris a while and return refreshed. Shari never really stood a chance after Brenda and Eileen.

I'll bet some passers-by were like, "WTF is Leslie Brooks doing in the middle of the street!?"

This might have been a more compelling take for a breakdown story than just putting a blonde wig on poor Victoria Mallory.

(I know I am oversimplifying that story, sorry)

From Janice Lynde IMDb page, her primetime roles seem to be mostly failed pilots, guest starring roles, and TV movies. In the 1980s she also had two daytime roles on Another World and One Life to Live. I don't think she ever got a regular role on a primetime series, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I think John Conboy had great ideas, but he never, in his entire career, understood when he'd gone too far with it.

When Y&R expanded to an hour, the writing suffered tremendously.  Bell & Alden had no idea how to structure and write an hour show, and many of the storylines went off the rails.  The ratings nosedived.  John Conboy, in his (misguided) efforts to keep the ratings up, turned the lights down even lower, turned the music up higher, and put the cast in scantier clothing.  By 1981, the show almost looked like a cheap parody of the Y&R which had been such a phenomenal success in the 1970s.  The soap critic (John Kelly Genovese) wisely described the failing show as "cheap tits & ass titillation backed by dull stories".

Wes Kenney fixed all of that nonsense immediately, and I believe he objectively told Bill Bell which storylines were working and which ones needed to be ditched immediately.  Within a month of John Conboy's exit, the show started a whole new resurgence -- a prettier and cleaner product than it had ever been under John Conboy.

I'm thankful to "Capitol" for relieving Y&R of John Conboy before the entire product crashed.

@Broderick Speaking of Capitol, do you think Capitol regular Kimberly Beck would have fared well on Y&R at any point?  Peter Barton, one of Ms. Beck's castmates in the 1984 slasher film Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, appeared regularly on Y&R as Scott Grainger Sr. from 1988 to 1993.

Is Y&R the only soap with multiple golden eras? When I think of Y&R’s golden eras I always think of 1975-79, 1983-86, and 1990-spring 1994 as being the golden years for Y&R

Silver ages would be 1988-89, 1998-2001, and a Bronze Age from late 2002 to early 2004.

I so meant to reply to your recent post in the B&B August thread after seeing we’re basically having the same feeling about both Y&R and B&B these days. Both shows are so embarrassing to watch compared to BTG (I really need to get more vocal/active in the monthly thread but everyone else seems to say it better 😁)

To me the Bronze ended 05. 05 was a game changing  year but this is why Y&R to me is the greatest soap. Very consistent

I always viewed 1998 to 2001 as Kay Alden trying to replicate Bill Bell's style with his umbrella stories, but with a somewhat quicker pace.   I have a feeling that she was now getting much more interference from the network during this time as well so she wasn't allowed to really develop her style of head writing.

The main element I noticed that Alden did that still plays out to this day was making Victor the main attraction where all roads ended with him.   One of the reasons was that she was the one to write his character, his dialogue, etc.. so she understood Victor the most and really centered the show around his character.

With that said, the 1998 to 2001 had some interesting successes for Alden with the glow up of Nina's character after her rock bottom in early 1998 with her moving on from Ryan, dating, writing a book, and enjoying her own company before she left for LA to adapt her book into a screen play.

And lastly.. the Tricia Denniston arc from mid 1998 to November/December 2001 was quite a masterful arc with every beat shown and played.  Alden took a character that Bill Bell created without a true purpose... and really made her a memorable late 90s character.   That whole arc showed that Alden was listening to Bill Bell when she was learning the ropes on the show on how to write a character/story arc.

You talking about one of my fav eras. Soap Opera at its peak.

It’s hard to imagine a Rex/Phyllis scene because they just seem so far apart character wise. Like Rex to me represents the classier Bill Bell era of Y&R and though Phyllis was created by Bill Bell, I feel she’s one of the constant problems that’s plagued the Y&R of the last almost 20 years if that makes sense?

It's very awe thinking at one point those characters co existed yet Y&R was one of the soaps that had some of the longest serving caracters.

Unfortunately, those episodes of Phyllis’ arrival in Genoa City and the death of Rex Sterling are nowhere to be found. Such a shame, because they would have been amazing to watch again.

Yup! I agree with that earlier list especially 1990-93 being a second gold age. I would say 1994-1997 and 2002-2005 were bronze. 1998-2001 was silver and solid. Spermgate, Victor & Diane's divorce, Matt Clark 2.0, Phyllis, the return of Kay vs Jill were highlights for me.

there's a new channel posting YNR episodes, enjoy the channel while it still exists.

Why was Nikki so up in arms about Jack planning a hostile takeover of Newman Enterprises? She says Jack is trying to take away a company Victor spent his entire life building --- as if that's not what Victor did to John by taking over Jabot.

John was very respectful to Victor despite Victor repeatedly emasculating him by taking his company and messing around with his daughter.
