Lol it actually might be pure coincidence actually. In fact the Crystal Lake reference may be a instant of real life veracity given their is a real Crystal Lake, Illinois just 20 miles south of the real Genoa City, Wisconsin. Given Bell's great familiarity with the area it wouldn't be a surprise he'd actual reference a nearby real resort lake as opposed to a Friday the 13th reference.

Ah, thanks! Like I said, it would be a very weird joke for Y&R, of all soaps, to make, so this makes much more sense lol

You're welcome! Y&R(along with B&B of course) has been the one soap to actually take advantage of writing in actual nearby locations ie taking to trips to Chicago and Green Bay, Alice and Cassie living in Madison, Christine "dumping" Isabella's body in Lake Michigan etc. Oddly I don't think Milwaukee has ever been mentioned.

When Nick and Sharon wanted to franchise Crimson Lights in 2000 (the beginning of the Matt Clarke story...) it was Milwaukee where Nick often travelled to top open the first coffee house outside of Genoa City...

Seeing Greg Wrangler (Steve) in the Y&R article makes me wonder why Bill Bell never had Lauren goes after Steve and continue her rivalry with Tracy.

Y&R monthly summary from Australia's TV Soap from exactly twenty years ago, March 1996:

Phyllis' schemes

Danny is desperate to get out of his marriage to Phyllis. He is sure that once the court-appointed marriage counselor sees the state of affairs he will grant the divorce. Danny tries to convince Dr Reid that there is no hope of a reconciliation with Phyllis, but it seems his pleas are falling on deaf ears.  He tells the counsellor that Phyllis tricked him into marrying her and that he wants out of their marriage. Meanwhile, Phyllis is trying to get little Danny to bond with Peter in an attempt to make Danny jealous, but her plans are not working out quite the way she expected. She soon gets a phone call from Dr Reid asking her to come to his office to answer some of Danny’s allegations. When she gets there she tells the doctor that Danny has a tendency to distort the truth and he is confused about his feelings for her. Throughout the conversation, Phyllis keeps hitching her skirt up her thighs, showing off her shapely legs to the flustered counsellor. The vixen is up to her old tricks.

Sharon stops by Victor’s house to thank him for their wedding gift. When they are leaving they bump into Hope who has returned to Genoa City for Luan’s funeral.  Surprised at finding Victor’s estranged wife in town the young couple report to Nikki that they have seen Hope heading to the millionaire’s house. Nikki assumes that Hope has returned to try and rekindle the passion and maybe bridge the gap with Victor to try and get their marriage back on track. At Victor’s penthouse, Hope shows her husband a picture of their infant son. Victor notices that Hope is wearing a wedding ring but doesn’t mention it. The next day, Hope returns and gives Victor a birthday gift. At the same time Nikki arrives and it is obvious there is still no love lost between the two women. Hope decides to stay in Genoa City a few days longer but when she calls the hotel to extend her reservation she is told that it is full. Victor offers Hope a place to stay and agrees.

Life and Death

Luan struggles to hold onto life as John calls the ambulance.  When the paramedics arrive they try desperately to revive Luan without success and John is forced to call Mai and Keemo and tell them their mother is dead. Jack returns from work and is met by a tearful Mai and a very angry Keemo who demands to know why they weren’t told of their mother’s illness. Jack tries to tell Keemo that he and Luan weren’t aware how close to the end she was and it was her wish that her children be saved the trauma of having to look after their dying mother. Keemo won’t accept Jack’s explanation and storms out of the house, telling his father that he will never forgive him for what he has done.

Homecoming queen

Jack calls Ashley in Paris to tell her their mother is back in town and trying to reconcile things with John. But Jack wasn’t prepared for Ashley’s reaction. Instead of being pleased with the turn of events, Ashley can’t believe that Dina would dare show her face back in Genoa City after deserting her family so many years ago. Jack tells her he didn’t call her in Paris to upset her, rather to ask for her help in getting their parents back together. Ashley tells Jack she wants nothing to do with it.  Frustrated, Jack flies to Paris and reminds his sister that their father is wasting his life in a love-less marriage to Jill. He begs her not to discourage John if he decides to rekindle the relation-ship with Dina. Mean-while, back in Genoa City, Dina confides in Kay that Ashley wouldn’t approve of her plans.

An offer too good

With Chris out of the picture, Mary sees it as the perfect opportunity for Lynne to try her luck once more with Paul. It’s no secret that Mary has always wanted Lynne for her daughter-in-law. At first Lynne is reluctant but she finally gives in to Mary’s insistence and admits that she is still in love with Paul. Delighted at the turn of events, Mary suggests that Lynne invite Paul out for dinner, but not before she gives herself a make-over. When Lynne arrives at work the next day, Paul is stunned at the•        transformation and compliments Lynne on her~          new look. Encouraged by his appreciation, Lynne suggests that they finish their work at her place and she will cook him dinner.  Not thinking any-thing of the offer, Paul accepts and Lynne and Mary both become excited at the prospect of a second chance for this relationship to work.

Confrontation time

Chris gives Paul a belated birthday gift, but he is reluctant to accept it. He tells her that everyone seems to be trying to get them back together. Chris tells him that no-one can do that and their future is now in their hands. At home alone, Paul opens the gift to find a watch engraved with the words: “To Paul, all my love forever, Christine”. Meanwhile, Chris goes to talk with Nina about her meeting with Paul when Danny stops by the office to complain that the counselling sessions seem to betaking too long. He tells Chris that Phyllis is distorting the truth by telling Dr Reid lies about their relationship. Paul comes by just as Danny is leaving. When he asks Chris what Danny was doing at the office, Chris tells him that her ex-husband is having trouble with his marriage. Paul res-ponds that Danny’s marriage has caused a lot of people a lot of problems. He admits to Chris that he still loves her but he just can’t seem to get the image of her and Danny together out of his mind.

Reunited

Dina has returned to Kay’s after shopping for John’s retirement gift, but she seems preoccupied. Their conversation turns to Audrey but it is interrupted by a phone call. Dina decides to pay Ashley a visit to try and smooth things over with her daughter. After talking with Ashley for awhile, Dina decides it may be best that she return to France, especially after her daughter accuses her of coming back to Genoa City to try and get her hands on John’s money.  Meanwhile, after John’s retirement party, Audrey asks to speak with John alone and confesses that she told Dina all those years ago that John was going to ask for a divorce because he had fallen in love with Audrey. Enraged at the confession, John orders Audrey to leave and rushes to Kay’s to find Dina. But when he gets there he is told he is too late, Dina has left for France — this time for good. Has John missed his chance or will he be re-united with the mother of his children, even if they’ve clashed many times in the past?

It's amazing to think back on how revolutionary Y&R actually was in the 1970s. It's almost surreal to think when Y&R first premiered that The Secret Storm, Edge of Night, and Love of Life were all still on the CBS daytime line-up. Yet the old guard that was ATWT, GL, and SFT had gotten stodgy and so cliched so much that by 1975 the stories of Chris' rape, Jennifer's breast cancer and other melodrama, and of course Katherine/Phillip/Jill were so explosive it faded into daytime legend it's no wonder that Y&R  suddenly went from bottom of the barrel upon its debut in '73 to a top five soap just two years later in 1975. And of course in my opinion nobody in daytime did a story hook or a climax better than Y&R, even back then. Even though the middle could so easily get bogged down and some stories had some major flaws, Bell always hit that climaxing beat from early stories such as Snapper and Sally all the way to the Veronica Landers caper.

Ahh, the original Chris Brooks and Snapper Foster, as played by Trish Stewart and William Gray Espy. They had great chemistry and burned up the screen.
