Belle is indeed named after Isabella. It was Roman's idea.

Courtesy the Oct. 22, 1993 synopsis found on Jason's site:

"Roman suggests to Marlena that they call the baby Isabella and Marlena agrees. Sami isn't too happy when she overhears it but when they ask John he loves the idea. They toast to Isabella Brady."

I gotta agree with Sami on this one. -- thanks @Franko for the source, that's a good find.

I mean, not enough to sell the kid on the black market (pun intended) but..

At least it wasn't John who suggested it, that makes it cleaner.  Roman had naming rights until the christening cleared up the paternity.

Yeah, that's I mentioned the christening, when the truth comes out

Reading October and November 1993, what is actually nuts is how much story they went through in a month.

Because John's not even interested in Marlena at the time of Belle's birth.  He is rebound lusting for Kristen, who delivered Belle (funny mention in SOD about Marlena being unable to service at the Horton cabin on her "cellular" phone, I assume there was heightened vigilance to the exposition covering the tech of the time).

And, of course, since it was Kristen helping Marlena give birth during a stormy night, they both looked glossy, windswept, and gorgeous.

Justice for Jamie, I bet she's still holding Sami's secrets wherever she is.

At this point, Marlena, John, and Roman all thought Roman was Belle's father. Sami had switched the initial blood tests. When it was time for another round of tests (because Belle was jaundiced), Sami panicked and kidnapped the baby.

Up until January 1994, Sami was the only one who knew that John was Belle's father. Next up were Stefano and Peter, once Stefano read Sami's diary (he figured it would reveal what was going on between John & Marlena). Stefano revealed the truth of Belle's parentage to Roman AFTER Marlena revealed her tryst with John (about two weeks later, to be exact). Marlena and John were the last ones to find out (during February sweeps, naturally).

The John Black name was revived in September 1991.

John and Marlena may have committed adultery, but they weren't going to be smug creeps about it. "Roman, how do you feel about the name Isabella Titania Brady?"

I went back to see how teen Sami even figured out how to sell a baby in 1993, and the recap is unintentionally hilarious. The exposition is so blunt it feels like the writers drafted it between bites of lunch. Suddenly there’s a teen mom named Karen who sold her baby through a shady lawyer, and somehow Sami just… knows this man and pays him with hospital volunteer money.

You can tell they were trying to make the whole thing “plausible” enough, but also knew the baby wouldn’t be gone long enough to justify a real subplot.

I know one thing, if Karen had confided in Jamie, Sami would've never met Steve Miller. Jamie knew that snitches get stitches. Not to be confused with the horrific Stephen Miller, who was 8 in 1993.

AND

Just to show the audience how shady Steve the lawyer could be, he was played by this guy -- Character actor Terry Wills was cast as creeps on every sitcom in the 1980s.  I hope they used a doll if he had to handle baby Isabella.

Cut to John months later, "Roman, Marlena's mattress is like a bag of rocks.  How did you ever get a good night's rest on that thing?  No wonder, Doc told me you preferred your sleeping bag on the floor.."

One other side note, because now I've re-read 1993-1994.  I think that I found a ret-con issue. In 1993 after John finds out that Stefano is Kristen's father. It is not like I am claiming to have found nuclear fission, clearly mistakes happen.  But, I found this to be amusing.

In 1993, Stefano becomes deadly ill, so Kristen tells John that she needs to be by her father's side, but not to worry about the deadly disease, because she's adopted.  Given, that I've always thought of Kristen as being adopted, until the more recent cannon that she is Stefano's biological child, it is interesting that in 1993, the week before Tony comes to town to announce that he is Kristen's fiancée.  Kristen is saying that she can't give blood to her dying father, because she was adopted.  So, the current reverse in cannon, neglects that detail.

It is so funny to read this and then see Kristen and Tony in the crypt this week, 32 years later.  That's more than half the show's history at this point, amazing.

    • While I criticize their hiring, I fully recognize that they didn't hire themselves. TPTB hired the actors and wrote for them. And no, no one would've been able to step into Bernau's shoes. Pilon at least conveys a certain Machiavellian menace . RR is just wrong for the role, but the subsequent writers all seem obsessed with pitting Alan and Phillip against each other over women. The Lewises, no matter what you think about them, only passed one woman 'round. Alan and Phillip passed around three---Blake, Beth and Olivia.    There is a moment when Van tells Alan--if we marry, don't screw me over or you'll regret it. So I wouldn't doubt that Van would've been the trigger in Phillip's takeover had Maeve stayed. Instead, Henry ends up tipping the scales, while Josh kind of gums up the works (I guess, I haven't watched all of it, I don't think most of it is up.) If they wanted a triangle, they had one--Alan/Van/Ross. With Alan and Ross' history, it practically would've written itself. Maybe our thinking is wrong...maybe Long would've put Van and Ross back together, and broke them up to set up the triangle.  I do think they were flirting with the idea of Rick/Chelsea after Johnny left. There's a point when Mindy comes back to town where Chels thinks Mindy doesn't appreciate Rick enough. I just think that it would've been too weird, having Rick fall for another one of Phillip's ex's, and Mo being her sister and his stepmother. Y'know I am all about any story that gets Van away from ****. Developing amnesia, becoming a bad lounge singer named Panessa who performs poetry in the park. ANYTHING. Did Roger and Billy ever have a conversation after Billy got out of jail? I know Roger told Vanessa he'd been paroled, but I'm not sure they truly crossed paths again. Part of that's timing, but I also think TPTB really just didn't want to bring up that past directly.
    • I picked a random episode from the beginning of November. Visually the show does look great. I was shocked to see quite the love scene between Claire and Holden. The LA bar set looks fantastic and there were EXTRAS! Still not a lot of characters featured in the episode. Liked some of the new music cues.
    • I saw the Lull scenes on X today. Why did they paint Lunacy into a corner? LY has been a gift to the show. Unless she's moving on, I don't get it. So Brad takes Luna out of the show and leaves us with Will, Electra, Remy and Deke for the younger set?

    • Even on mute, it looked all kinds of ewwwww to me.    That said...BILLY FLYNN though. MMMMmmm. I was not expecting all of that under those saggy clothes.
    • I feel like they finally noticed in the viewing and online opinion that Dani and Andre are where the lightning in the bottle is FINALLY, SORRY, ASHLEY and started to run with it.   That said...I do still worry because it's clear MVJ wants to play Dani/Bill since they were one of the main A stories...helped by Timon and Karla also having great chemistry.   I honestly think they were not counting on a full blown triangle where people are taking sides. Go 'head, Karla Mosley!!!
    • Like I said before, I was worried, but Jazmen really does have a thing for taking breakdown writers that are not my favorites and making lemonade out of lemons. I'm glad he's sticking around.   That said...I think today was the first time I found him having slang in his scripts jarring. Uh oh. lol.
    • Count me in on not wanting Bill/Dani to be end game. It takes two to tango, and I think that Dani wasn't this wounded bird in that marriage especially when it has been implied that she's been mentally unbalanced for sometime now (and I think that could be part of the reason Naomi is just damn angry all the time). Dani will break Andre's heart in the same way that Bill broke her heart.
    • I really hope the writers truly notice that Dani and Andre work and change plans. At the end of the day Bill was still a serial cheater and married his daughter’s best friend. Eva and Kat is my favorite rivalry on soaps.
    • You and me both. As it should be! Watching right now and just getting my life cuz their absence on my screen has been felt.
    • I would take her back as executive producer immediately (although, I do feel like Sally McDonald is doing well as co-executive producer). Josh Griffith as head writer is the most troublesome, but demos and ratings are solid, and that is what the suits look at for this soap, so unless a major slump happens, no changes will come. Plus, under Phelps, we did win Outstanding Drama Series twice (2014/2015) after a seven-year spell of not winning. But right now, I do believe where she is is right where she belongs, and I feel like she's happy being where she is.
