I liked Rose. I thought she was OK with SH's Paul. I thought she was a breath of fresh air in a very suffocated and predictable Snyder and Walsh lineup. I wanted to see more of her with Iva. I felt like she suffered from poor use more than anything else. I liked her more when her father was around. I thought that she was a better example of Martha Byrne's abilities as an actress - I cared about Rose, whereas I often saw Byrne's Lily as an insufferable princess, and then, after a few years of genuinely maturing as a person, regressed back into the me-me-me-me twitdom that was increasingly unflattering with age. I thought Rose helped Lily as a character. I would have preferred they sent one off for extended periods rather than kill Rose for yet another overproduced shock value murder that had few consequences, other than Will angst.

Looking back, I have to say that Martha Byrne grates the hell out of me as an actress (as do Lily and Rose as characters). And no, I am not a Noelle Beck fan.

Didn't they get married then leave town so Seth could work on his writing career?

I liked Rose, she was funny and she was one character who could put Lily in her place, she was actaully one of the few "good," characters who could ever diss Lily and get away with it. I like that Lily finally had another female confidant and I like that it showed the loving side of Lucinda that she took Rose in as her own. I kind of agree with Byrne, Lily is the character who should have been killed off, by someone pissed off that the whole town is forced to celebrate her birthday!

What bugged me more is that they brought in Rose's dad and tried to pair him up with Nancy Hughes...what Nancy is a cougar all of a sudden. Would have made sense if Rose was raised by her grandfather but come on!!!

Carl there are no words for the Ratay comment!!!

This is hilarious. I would have loved that.

One of my all time favorite ATWT memories has to be one of her birthday episodes from 1988 where she was upset about Holden and the camera panned to Caleb, then that crazy guy who was supposed to be wooing her, then to Beau, all to catch their reactions over poor Lily's pain.

May 1989 episode is up. This has a lot of followup, and a few B-stories, but is very entertaining. The best part for me is we get to see some of the fallout from Hal, Barbara, Nancy, Bob, and Kim over the truth about Adam's paternity. I especially like that we see some of the stern, old school Nancy in this. Some nice Barbara/Hal moments in this too.

Other stories feature Lily trying to play rebel princess. This story was done to mature Lily, but it seems a little silly to me. I do like the casting for the rebel, and Sawyer. Lucinda is wooed by Niles Mason - as we know, he's up to no good, but Charles Keating and Liz Hubbard have a very natural spark. Caleb has a meltdown over Lily. There's a funny scene where Lily calls the farmhouse "my farmhouse." Indeed...

The B-story in this, cut off from just about everything else, is the feelings Nella has for Beau, and how this ends the last of the Beau/Pam relationship. Marland didn't waste any time at all in getting Beau out. I wonder why. I can see where he may have seemed superfluous (the canvas already having so many young, sensitive men), but the actor had a very strong presence, charisma, and it was nice to have a character who had no major ties to core characters. I also like the actress who plays Nella. I wish the show had done more with them.

I'm absolutely loving those 1993 eps they're a trip down memory lane!

Are there any clips available of Beverly Penberthy playing Kirk's lover Adelaide?

Does anyone know if Betsy Stewart appeared at all in 1991 played by a Tracy Sallons?

I posted Sallows' scenes in April. I think she may be in another clip too, from the same set (David's funeral).

Thanks! Sorry to have missed it when it was first posted, but I wonder why they didn't try to bring back Lindsay Frost as Betsy for Davids funeral.

At time I talked about the second episode in this I thought it was Pat Barry. But maybe it was Beverly Penberthy? It may be.

Thanks! Sorry to have missed it when it was first posted, but I wonder why they didn't try to bring back Lindsay Frost as Betsy for Davids funeral.

Lindsay was filming a pilot.

I believe that's Beverly Penberthy herself! Barry was much much older by that point. It's a shame ATWT didn't find a way to keep such an underrated daytime legend around.

Lindsay Frost's career never took off did it? Funny just tonight I was watching a Seinfeld rerun tonight of when George and Jerry visit NBC to propose the Jerry show and meet Susan for the first time they walked past two giant promotional posters, one for Blossomblink.png and the other for Frost's(with Robert Englund) short-lived series Nightmare Cafe.

The St. Jude's Benefit Recap!

This was the Fifth Annual Benefit Of Daytime Television

as it Saluted St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Held October 16, 1998

Soap News

The Benefit site was at the Marriott Marquis which is a gorgeous hotel. I will set up the room to give you a quick idea of how it appeared. The Banquet Room (BR), as expected, is huge. The stage is on your left and centered. The tables are placed in a partial U around the stage and dance floor and continue until about one-third of the way to the back wall. In that remaining section, the Silent Auction Items are displayed. Against the back, right wall are the buffet tables. While the Benefit included actors and auction items from other Soaps, Primetime and Sports, my descriptions are mainly focused around ATWT. In the hallways leading to the BR and in the BR, itself, actors and fans gathered for pictures, autographs, and conversation.A note before I continue. Over the past two years, I have developed friendships through email that started out about ATWT. This event gave us the chance to meet and develop those friendship further. Between this and the happenings of the event, this evening was FUN!

Even more important though and as much as we enjoyed meeting friends, actors and seeing the performances, we were all very aware that the real reason for this Benefit was the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. I know that all in attendance sincerely hope that the goals for this event were not just reached but were above and beyond what the planners had worked for. There is never enough support for the important work that the Hospital does!

Live Auction Items As the World Turns Set Tour

Two lunches with Michael Park (top bids were $1,600 each)

There were so many items listed for Live and Silent Auction aside from ATWT, i.e., tickets to the Soap Opera Digest Awards, other set tours, Jay Leno tickets, lunch with other stars, pictures with stars to be published in the different Soap magazines, autographed hockey sticks, basketball, tickets, etc.Performances

As all of us are already aware, we have an extremely talented cast. We were treated to the following:Two songs performed by Scott Holmes were "Word Up" and "This is How We Do It." Scott had the room jumping with "This Is How We Do It." We also had a very special treat - Scott's son performed with him.

Martha Byrne singing "Dancing in the Streets" and "Walking on Sunshine." Marvelous!Maura West and Leslie Kay Sterling dancing with the Party Dolls to "I Will Survive." These two do know how to get crazy. They were great.

Finale by Michael Park with "Hooked on a Feeling." Ahhhhhhhhhh!

ACTORS OF ATWT

For me, it was a unique opportunity to see the actors/portrayers of our ATWT characters. All of the actors were very gracious. (They are listed in no particular order.)Martha Byrne was the hostess for the evening. She is gorgeous and lively. She set a fun tone for the auction. She reminded me very much of her character, Lily, with her energy and focus.

Lauren Martin-Harkins (Camille) is absolutely breathtaking. She has a natural beauty combined with shyness and elegance.Brad may be hot on screen, but it does not compare to seeing Nick Kokotakis, himself. The air feels as if it ignites around him. As you watch Brad narrow his eyes, communicating through them, magnify those expressive eyes ten-fold and, voila, Nick in person.

Michael Park (Jack) came directly from his play to do the finale at the benefit. All this was while he was suffering from the flu. Yet, the professional that he is, his performance was perfection. He is like the endearing boy next door, yet sexy. As I watched him talking to fans, it was as if he was talking to his family members.Nathaniel Marston (Eddie) is a cute kid (keep in mind that I am quite a bit older than he is - he reminds me of my nephews). He seemed totally taken by surprise that he was generating so much attention. Guess what, Nathaniel? Your love triangle hasn't even started (and, yes, you are hot). So, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

The surprise of the evening, for me, was Daniel Markel (ex-David). I had heard how terrific he was with people but never expected what I saw. His interest in those around him was instinctive and genuine. When he turns those gorgeous blues on you, you KNOW it.Elizabeth Hubbard is the epitome of the word "Lady." I find the way Eddie calls Lucinda "lady" humorous since the character's meaning is quite different. Elizabeth is a lovely, gracious, and sophisticated woman.

Anthony Herrera (James) was quiet and a presence in a room that you cannot miss. Every time I saw him, I wondered what he was thinking. Sound familiar?Jon Hensley (Holden) and Kelley Menighan Hensley are a cute couple. Few actors come across on screen looking exactly as they do in person. Jon is the rare exception - sigh! Kelley is softer in appearance. I am not referring to Emily but how the camera records Kelley.

Benjamin Henderickson was very attentive and quiet. The best way to describe this is to picture Hal as he stands, slightly leanly back while someone is talking to him. You can see him thinking. He was also very much the gentleman.Peter Parros (Ben) was warm and openly generous. The smile never left his face nor was it forced. Ladies, we do have the sexiest gentlemen on this show.

Yvonne Perry (Rosanna), Marie Masters (Susan), my apologies, but I did not have much of a chance to observe them.Sheri Alexander (ex-Samantha) is stunning and funny. The directness that she uses as Sam on screen was mirrored in her actions throughout the night.

Annie Parisse (Julia) is sweet and gentle. She definitely turns heads her way with her gracious presence.Maura West was lovely and gracious. Her quickness of humor is very evident in the way we see Carly.

Scott Holmes was a surprise, although not as much as Daniel was. While Tom is fairly stiff, Scott is funny and he has a fanatastic voice. Oh, and he was wearing jeans - wow!Scott DeFreitas (Andy) was very nice, gorgeous, hot, gorgeous. I got the impression that when he looked at you, he was able to read quite a bit about you.

Jaime Dudney (Georgia) was precious. She is a very sweet person.

Lesli Kay Sterling (Molly) was very nice, not to mention, gorgeous. She was very natural and up front talking to fans.

I wonder how Lucy Johnson felt if she read that about DeFreitas....ph34r.png

I don't know why I didn't realize that was Penberthy.

At least P&G still found some roles for their talents, even small roles, up to the early 90s. Maeve Maguire had a short role on ATWT in 1992. I'm sorry that was discontinued.

I would have liked seeing more of Adelaide. They could have brought her to Oakdale after Kirk/Ellie broke up, especially since that started a long dry spell for Kirk. She would have been more interesting than characters like Aunt Mary.

Thanks for the newsletter. At first I thought Lauren Martin Harkins was Laura Leighton and wondered what Leighton was doing at an ATWT event.

Scott DeFrietas started becoming very handsome around the late 80s and that certainly never changed, and hasn't today. He was also a decent actor and represented a part of ATWT which Goutman and the later CBS and P&G people and Sheffer/Passanante never understood. And of course, the brilliant John Valente.

Seeing AMC's end just reminds me again of how little anyone at P&G or CBS gave a damn about the end of ATWT. I get very annoyed when I think about that damn cast photo which was chopped together and poor Kathleen Widdoes wasn't even in. You could sense some of the sadness and anger from Don Hastings in that Mental Floss article.

Carl, it is so sad to watch how Don Hastings and Kathryn Hays are feeling in the following interview, which was conducted by a Dutch news organization:

Well, Beverly Penberthy & Pat Barry do have a similar tone to their voices, maybe that's why you got them confused. Love them both!
