Wow, the SoapClassics people had the rights to 12,000 episodes of As The World Turns?? Seems like P&G pulled the plug before the SoapClassics people even had a real chance!

https://www.welovesoaps.net/2012/02/soapclassics-begins-streaming-as-world.html?m=1

How many episodes did they stream, how many episodes collectively on those DVD sets?

Oh okay, it was for Guiding Light and all of the other soaps too. Still, they didn't even get to Another World and the others. Wonder what really happened?

The stories might have been ridiculous and the characters did become idiots, but people forget Reilly featured THE characters on the show.  Some newbie nobody wasn’t possessed, Marlena was.  And all the stories were rooted in romance and love- having it, losing it, wanting it.

People also forget there was an evolution- they wanted the ratings of his last 18 months, but he had laid the groundwork of those stories for years.  The show didn’t just become crazy for sweeps one year like everyone else tried and failed at.  There was a long period of time between the experiment of Carly being buried alive and then the possession, and then the Secret Room.

I didn’t think about it this way back then, not until Curlee complimented it in the interview Toups did with her, but Reilly was great at structure.  The plots dragged on, but he kept the interest up with those mini-stories he would tell around the larger plots to build excitement.

Back to ATWT- when Riche left GH, I hoped she would go back to daytime on another soap, and I though she would fit well on ATWT.  I’m not sure why, it just seems like it would have benefited from her and she would have made a good fit.

The SoapClassics company must have assumed that P&G would renew the license agreement because they were given so little time for so many episodes.

In that short time frame, the SoapClassics people were expected to digitize 12,000 episodes from analog, which was totally unrealistic. It seems like P&G didn't want the SoapClassics people to succeed. Too bad nobody has asked either company on the record for an explanation of what really happened. I think the customers who anticipated buying future compilations deserved an explanation. Not to just have the whole entire outfit just up and vanish.

After my recent reading of the Soaps of Yesteryear Tumblr, I question this assumption. In 1983 when P&G syndicated Texas to TBS, it was noted that they had the foresight to add a limited residuals clause to the contracts for all acting, writing, and production staff which made it cheaper to rebroadcast on cable.  Clearly at the outset of the production of Texas, and later EON, they did not know if the market would allow for syndication because no soap had ever done it before.  However, given the fact that those contracts exist, it would make it easier to reproduce the soaps in either in syndication, or later on streaming services, in order to maximize profits.

I would suggest that it was the dissolution of P&G's media production, not an overall corporate disinterest, that keeps their soaps in the virtual vault.  When I read the book Soap Opera: the inside story of Procter and Gamble by Alecia Swasy, it was clear by the 90's P&G was hit with huge losses due to environmental issues and consumer lawsuits.  They shut down production because they couldn't afford it anymore after years of red lines due to corruption around the research on consumer safety.  So, it wasn't a loss of creativity in the writing or production that killed ATWT as much as customer payouts for tampons that caused toxic shock and animal testing on detergent.  ATWT might still be on air today if corporate raiders hadn't destroyed the consumer product industry by trying to cut corners.  Bad writing didn't kill the soap, as much as actual bad soaps killed the commercial viability.

Thus, it may not be that P&G didn't want SoapClassics to succeed, as much as that the people who might of cared were no longer a part of that corporation's future.  So, P&G considers soaps a discontinued product, just like Prell shampoo.

Still, I would like to hear from the SoapClassics people to hear their take on the matter, especially since it was they, not P&G who were doing all the work in the digitization process for those box sets. Surely, if PGP/P&G made them sign a NDA, or something in the licensing agreement, the statute of limitations must have run out by now.

I wonder what the future is for the DVD?

I still have my DVD Player but I know that today's PCs no longer even include the DVD-ROM.

I always thought it would have been a cool idea to let people download episodes and allow them single transfer to a DVD-R. It would be cheaper for the producer/distributor. A single or a group of episodes per DVD-R but one transfer each, so it can't be reproduced and resold.

When SoapClassics built a streaming platform, that's the direction I thought they would eventually go.

I have a DVD player and blu ray one too. I own many DVDs and blu rays. I was going to purchase the finstones blu ray and mission impossible but both are available online. One on HBO Max and CBS all access which I have.

When that next stimulus check comes in, let's just say, I'll be "off to the races" to buy my laptop. The only thing is, that I'd like to figure out how to detach my old gaming laptop screen from the rest of the chassis, so I can use it as a second monitor. The screen is still in excellent condition. It's the rest of the computer that has bitten the dust.

Last night, I just found out that Count Stovall played a character called Dr. Hank Chambers on "The Doctors" before playing Detective Roy Franklin? Why hasn't anyone tried to get him for one of these reunion livestreams?

Also, why were there two Black doctors with the first name Hank? Couldn't they come up with any other names? Even Henry "Hank" Aaron didn't want to be called Hank.

    • Good point. It would provide some conflict with Jack. As much as I am not interested in Claire, I don't find it difficult to understand why she might be a bit reluctant  to commit to a guy who has already been divorced twice or is  3 times?before he is 30. That's a natural obstacle that Claire would be hesitant about. But in GC every relationship is true love and various past marriages are forgotten.

I’m in NYC, and I can’t help but wonder if NYC prosecutors, politicians, etc. ever felt the way that Laura did, back in the 80s-90s when they were taking down the mob.  “Oooh, don’t put John Gotti in prison. The guy who comes in after him might be worse”
    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron/Jamey-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31. I like that.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • Yes, they did say 27 sets!! I wondered at the time if they could all be up at the same time.
    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.
