I stand corrected, Vee. Yes, Margo Husin worked continuity on OLTL but I believe it wasn't her only function on the show. I know on EastEnders the continuity consultant works primarily on continuity and also on product placement. I interviewed one of them once. Here's a fun example of what he/she has to do re: product placement-since the BBC is a public funded channel and not a commercial one then certain products can't be seen too much on the local shop's shelves. There has to be a balance of the same kind of products. For instance, if there are two cans of Coke which are easily spotted then there have to be two cans of Pepsi of equal prominence!

I doubt I could correct you about anything - I'm sure the function was a bit more complicated than just continuity. And by the end of OLTL on ABC they didn't seem to give a [!@#$%^&*].

I'm sure you'll be correcting me from time to time, Vee!

I just don't understand why the likes of ATWT, AMC and GL didn't hire someone to folllow continuity. The British soaps seem to keep track of all of their characters' birthdays which they can use for storyline purposes.

Simple answer: no one gave a !@#$%^&*]. And they didn't think viewers gave a !@#$%^&*] either.

Plus, wherever they could save a buck, they thought, they did.

It's also too bad that ATWT didn't care enough to save all of their their Masters. Wiping them was a really stupid idea but if I've come to understand anything since reading these blogs and messageboards, it's that long term thinking is not considered a virtue in soapoperaland.

I've been squawking about the seeming lack of continuity on these American daytime shows over the last decade now. Over. And over.

ITA. I'm watching a lot of Classic AWTW from the '80s and you can tell that not only was continuity still valued but they actually did multiple takes of certain pivotal scenes like cliffhangers. Over the last decade or so of the show, it was just plow through material, and making it up as they went along. Just as long as they didn't have to stop and do any actual research. I guess Time really was Money, in that case.

Which one, EASTMA2? Everything I've written on here has been the truth. Using a hashtag doesn't exactly back up your claim, does it?

This thread is for discussing ATWT. I'm not interested in defending what I've shared here.

Just watched a clip of Ming-Na when (heh) she played Lien. I remember being very disappointed with her being cast because Lien was Amerasian. Ming-Na's features were completely Asian (she's of Chinese descent) and I felt that blunted the impact of Lien's arrival in Oakdale. Her undoubtedly diffcuit childhood in Vietnam as an Amerasian could have been extremely poignant backstory and might have brought out a few prejudices in some of the residents in Oakdale, too. Lindsay Price would have been ideal physically but I'm not sure she was in the business when the role was first cast. Her first role was a few years later as An Li #2 on AMC, right?

Right. Lindsay Price joined ALL MY CHILDREN in 1991, and Ming-Na Wen joined ATWT three years earlier.

I felt it was disappointing how we never saw Lien's mother (who was killed off, IIRC). Imagine if she, too, had come to Oakdale. Would there still be chemistry between her and Tom? And how would that have affected his relationship with Margo?

    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
    • You know one of the soap outlets posed that question just last week: Who do you want Trina with Spencer or Kai? And, of course, the picture of Spencer was NAC. I said, well, a lot. I chose Kai. I said that Spencer had been an entitled brat & that some people valued him over her, when I valued her above all others. I guess we'll see.
    • You're right. The only thing I can think of is if GH finally decides to bring back Spencer.
