I'm gonna watch to see how much she'll bomb. Probably she'll bring an increase, although who knows, and then people are gonna turn on it like they did on every single storyline that aired ihe last [pick a number] years.

Fact is, people will place blame at her. After last time when she brought in the 1mil or however many it was, anything less than will be thought of as a bomb, because people will refuse to acknowledge the fact that the amount of viewers are just not the same as they were then. Not to mention the amount of online fans and people who watch on soapnet are not counted. Viewers get their shows several way now, but thats an overall raings issue and i could go on for days about the outside and ineffective system.

All i care about is Brenda/Sonny. Although, i will love her current boyfriend because i have had a crush on brad Rowe for at least 10 years.

But yes, between matt/maxie/lucky, brenda, and craycray lisa i will be watching gh for as long as i can take it.

I hope for the best, but i am expecting the worst.

I do think Vanessa Marcil is great, when I say this is not going to be 2003 it's that it has been such a major downwards spiral in quality. 2003, was a downward spiral but this is significantly worse. There's almost nothing appealing to Sonny anymore. Jax is Carly's long-time dog, etc.

So GH had 2.8 million viewers this past month, right? Did they? Given that non-Marcil fact, I give Vanessa 2 months of keeping GH at nearly 3 million (maybe a bit over) and challenging Y&R in 18-49 demo but not beating them. The first few weeks of this story (the Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt phase) reads really dull and contrived to me though except for the S/B flashbacks which they'll probably have a lot of.

It's not enough to bring back this beautiful, exotic woman...there has to be story there too, you're absolutely right.

Guza's biggest mistake is not playing other stories around Brenda's return. The next two weeks are gonna be like an hour-long B&B...with other characters not in scenes with Brenda basically narrating and recapping events we've seen before involving her and teasing what is coming up in the next scene. That does not excite me at all.

I know people have complained about how overcrowded GH's cast is, but an hourlong soap(IMO) was designed for feature more stories and more CONTENT, instead of the same four characters. It seemed like Guza was finally turning the tide, but if this Brenda sh*t dominates the airtime, I'm not sure how many people(including myself) will want to stick around. Even if it does look pretty.

If Brenda's story is the ONLY story on the show, then it better be the best damn story in daytime.

I think the biggest mistake if there is one is thinking that her return means it has to be about Sonny and Jason. Jason as a character is pretty much done and the deadpan stuff he did with Brenda has been used up over the years. And everything with Sonny and Brenda is dead and buried and was long before she left even the first time around, in 1998.

If they are bringing her back to prop their fading names, then it's not about her. Just as JJ was supposed to be a huge boon to GH and take them back to the glory days, and whatever happened to that? He's wandering around, utterly pointless, like a rejected Robert Pattison impersonator.

Obviously Marcil is a bigger name than JJ ever was but that doesn't translate to a good show or to a show which many of Brenda's fans gave up on ages ago.

That's what Marcil wanted. She doesn't want to build a family around her(i.e. her sister, Julia). She wants to build a family around the men in her life and quite possibly the only female friend she won't steal a man from. She didn't even mention the Q's, who took her in. She mentioned that Jason, Jax, Sonny, and Robin were her family.

I wonder if she has actually watched the show over the past seven years. These characters are just worn down to nothing and they tend to sink anyone who gets in their path, unless it's some kind of conflict, like Dante could have been with better writing and no Franco.

All of her relationships with these men were empty stunts even before she left the first time around. People at the time put up with that because it was still playing on what they already knew but why should they care now? Clink boom has been done over and over, so has Jason snarks at shrieky women who don't like him but secretly do, and Sonny's long string of brunettes, and so on.

Has there been talk of that happening? That would be nuts.

ETA:

I disagree with you on the timing, but that is basically the GH she's coming back to - where everything and every character she is connected to has been over-cooked then left out to spoil/rot for years.

Spot on. It is a sad day for daytime when this opportunity will be completely squandered. As you point out, instead of using her as a glue to connect the various pieces of the canvas, Guza will just shamelessly shove her down people's throats and throw a bunch of compelling characters under the bus for her. It will create a boomerang effect and he'll anger more fans than he'll please.

But rather predictable, if I could define the last 5 years of daytime particularly it would probably be with the phrase squandered potential.

bell, thanks. I don't see it happening. Who would have thought The View could challenge Y&R in demos years ago? I think they'll just try to copy the formula of The View and gain earned success. At worst borrowing, I could see them putting it around Y&R's timeslot but not in it.

She does semi-consider Jason a Q. Remember when they married and she went straight to tell them and show the flashbacks. She's one of the few people who knew Jason Q that Jason has let into his life and he cares about.

    • Thanks for the well-detailed reply. I'm fairly early in my viewing, so I have some time before it goes nuts. Thanks a lot! @kalbir and @DRW50 thank you so much. I am just approaching 100 episodes, so I'm good for now.
    • The Duprees as the main family isn't the problem, but the fact is that over 3/4 of the cast are Duprees.. so it limits coupling potential and also keeps the canvas too closed in. Too many female Duprees and no hetero, nor gay, male Duprees is also a problem.   I also agree with @DemetriKanethat the male characters are one note, and not very layered/interesting... outside of Bill, that is. To me, I would have focused on either Nicole's family and dynamics or Dani's family and dynamics instead of trying to introduce/develop both families at the same time.  Nicole's family is more developed and interesting with loads of storyline possiblities then Dani's family right now. And because MVJ and co decided to feature so many Duprees... we're less likely to be free of any outside characters like Ashley/Derek since they're the non-Dupree part of the canvas.
    • BTG: A B&B: B DAYS: B+ GH: A- Y&R: C-
    • I can not see Kat as a police officer and do not want that for her. Thats not her passion nor does she care about that stuff. The stuff with Eva and Leslie is specific to her life and wanting to protect her family. Her "detective" skills have more to do with her business background, which makes her very analytical and pay close attention to details. If this show had a corporation, she'd make a shrewed businesswoman and CEO I definitely dont want to see her sleep with her cousin's husband. That would be too much of a Hayley redux which ironically you dont want with the Sharon/Hayley theory
    • I would make Jan, Ashley's mom, Anita and Vernon's maid. It would lock in to why Leslie would choose to befriend both her and Mona. It also gives Ashley a connection to the Duprees and explains how she befriended Naomi. I would have had Derek start the show as a cop to explain his connection to Jacob. Kat needs to realize that she is MADE to be a detective. Have her go through police training, making the appropriate comments about the uniform along the way. Have her prove she is so much more than a rich princess, even to herself. Then, when Jacob's partner is proven to be dirty, Kat is assigned as Jacob's rookie trainee. At the same time, Naomi does finally get a case she can follow through on. Her client is a person that Jacob arrested. This puts them at odds because Jacob knows this person did it, as does Kat, but Naomi only sees the extenuating circumstances and believes he deserves a lighter sentence and a second chance. THAT is when Jacob will turn to Kat in frustration and she will lose her virginity to him.
    • This opened my eyes and appeals to my logic. But, don't you also think that the fact that they are so ill-suited means that, by soap-opera-laws, they aren't a long term item?  I like how Belle is written now, so I appreciate the fact that she is in this story.  But, I don't believe anything will become of it, and I think EJ is going to mess it up very soon.  Which explains why I don't get too worked up over it. I'm also suspending my outrage until I see how EJ treats Belle during her mourning.  If he cheats with Cat, then we'll know that he was never meant to be happy.
    • Kristen also raped John post-Paris with a Magic Mirror.  Her pregnancy was "delicate" and they couldn't be intimate.  She had already lost the baby, needed to get pregnant immediately again and set a Stefano tricked out Magic Mirror to hypnotize John and John thought he was  having sex with Marlena.  John woke up the next day and thought it was a dream.
    • The show is only a few months in and still finding it's footing. I'm hoping MVJ has years of story in place for these characters and will pretty much stick to that plan (obviously with tweaking along the way) I do have some issues with the initial structure. Making the Duprees the centerpiece and not having a male with that name. Making Martin Vernon and Anita's would have solved that and made the age of the character more appropriate. I agree about not having a young couple in the beginnings of a romance. And having too many married couples. Jacob and Naomi could be just living together. That makes the possibility of other relationships more viable than within a marriage. Same with Smitty/Martin. Having them married with kids limits the story especially in terms of them as a gay couple.  The white characters existing in another universe is also a problem. That ties in with the workplace/job issues. I don't think they needed the hospital-instead the police station/real estate office or Martin's workplace could have utilized and have Derek/Ashley/Vanessa/Smitty/Shanice etc working and interacting there. ATM too many characters are meeting up in cafes etc-we're not seeing them at work. We needed to see more of how various characters interact eg Jacob/Bill, Ted/Bill. There were a lot of extended family scenes but there should be more one on one to get a sense of character and family dynamics. Leslie is a great character but her bag of tricks is getting over exposed. I would hate that she is kept on and other character's made to look like idiots by accepting her presence. They'll need some good writing and twists to keep her around. We can only hope some of the lesser actors improve as I don't want too many recasts or writeouts. So it's early days and I look forward to seeing the show evolve. And give the Duprees some staff!
    • Thanks. I barely remember any of the backstory there, just his ties to her parents. It was all so convoluted, everything with Tangie.
    • 81 and 82 were rather bad, with the infamous invasion of the Kirkland family. But sometime in late 82 or early 83, Claire Labine was rehired as head-writer and immediately put the focus back on the Ryan's. This time Labine's tenure was short, but she did great work. The entire show was compelling again -- especially the Charlotte Greer storyline (one of the best plots of the entire series).  But Labine was fired, yet again, and Ryan's Bar was bombed, resulting in most of the action being transferred to Greenberg's Deli, and a focus on younger characters with little connection to the Ryan family. So that is what you are probably seeing from 84.
