Survivor was a phenomenon in its first few years; it's surprising that the show even got 14 million after ten years on the air.

The soaps managed to keep solid ratings for many years until the past 10-15 and the more they kept running away from their fans the more the ratings dropped. I think that soaps have lost viewers because they have become so horrible moreso than just viewers finding other alternatives. There were other alternatives in the 80s yet the soap ratings were still decent.

I think Sunset Beach started in early 1997, when AW was still on. I remember how people would argue about whether SuBe or AW should be canceled and which one deserved to stay and all the rest. It wasn't a difficult decision for NBC -- they dumped both.

Yes, Sunset Beach was on when Another World got the yank. As AW is my all-time fave daytime soap, I along with many others were not happy with NBC dumping the higher rated of the two because Sunset Beach had Aaron Spelling attached and the 'youth market' mentality. NBC was boycotted by a whole-lot of people when AW ended and Sunset Beach's already low ratings tanked even lower as a result. If I remember right, even DAYS tanked to 2nd to last during that time, partly due to the boycott immediately after.

The GH story is atrocious. No wonder they lost viewers last week, and I expect they will lose more this week. Michael has not had his first kiss yet, but they've had him involved in shooting his father's girlfriend and killing his step-mother after waking from a year long coma, put in prison and possibly raped by a male inmate. And again, has never had a girlfriend or onscreen kiss yet. This is the story GH wants to attract young viewers? Not parties at the pool or even karaoke for the hundreth time?

Also, don't know how much of a factor is was, but some of the Jason/Elizabeth fanbase hosted another blackout GH week. Perhaps they were successful yet again?

The ratings tend to fluctuate but I wonder about viewer reaction to Carly's "revenge" plan, the bizarre return of Brook Lyn, and the deadly dull Lulu/Dante. Their big sex scene tanked in the ratings, not a great indication that viewers enjoy them.

    • Shut up, Dante and Lois.  I actually don't mind this particular soap trope, but in the context of this storyline, it just feels forced and unnecessary. If anything, this Dante/Gio tension needed to begin months ago. Plus, this storyline, in general, isn't doing Lois any favors either.  Emma comforting Gio was really sweet though. It's definitely time for the two of them to have their first kiss. And, Joss playing Secret Agent Barbie will just never work.
    • Note to makeup - Smitty’s eyebrows, bad clamshell look.

    • Okay I can buy that when Brook Lynn was a teen.  Now she knows the child is a boy one would think she'd be slightly suspicious.  Then again, Gio looks nothing like either of them so maybe not lol.
    • I've been behind & just got caught up & the last 3 days were amazing!
    • Yeah.  The hot, poor bad boy with a chip on his shoulder but with a heart of gold was a common soap trope in the 80s

    • That's been an issue with me... the lack of a cohesive 'Have Not' crowd that has focus other than Leslie/Eva.   I would beef up Jan, Mona, Laura, Joey, and few other male characters.. and not just be out to overthrow the Duprees.. but co-existing and broadening the scope of the show since the show is called Beyond the Gates. I think the set up the show has with everything revolving around the Duprees will become predictable especially if they always win.   It would be like Victor Newman on Y & R for 40+ years.. always winning, hardly ever losing.   With MVJ/Guza.. both trained under that mindset... I fear that will happen.   I've always heard from a performer that is playing a character like Leslie/Dana that you have to find the victim/hurt beneath the surface in order to play a villain/villainess... and I think that's why I enjoy watching her.. because she brings so much more to the part than what the writers put on the page.
    • I figure that was really hard for Dom to do. I completely GET why they wrote it the way they did but I wonder if it was necessary. Meanwhile I have 2 really icky ideas in my head. Drew is going to blame Tracy KNOWING it was not her. Dante is going to blame Lulu.  After that, everyone else is going to be mad at Lois.  Tracy is going to double down on wanting to get rid of Sonny. Sonny's going to be more dug in to stay because he now has a new descendant.
    • I can actually buy Brook Lynn being so self-absorbed and incurious that she never thought to question why her mom and grandma were so attached to Gio.
    • It was overkill and the whole narrative Lois was too nice to the orphan kid when he was little, WHAT? Like Emma said no one thinks Gio is a troublemaker that gets 14-year-old kids drunk for fun. That being said, Lulu figured this Gio thing out in episode, but Brook Lynn never once questioned Lois and Gloria's attachment to a child that was the same age as the baby she gave up?  Ever?
