I mean, there's really no contest, IMO. Lecy was Becky. That was the Becky persona. Pretty, but smart. Ambitious, but had a weakness for bad-boys with no future. She wanted to be one of the cool kids, but ultimately she was a tad bit nerdy. Lecy's Becky was great at going head-to-head with Roseanne.

Becky: "Oh, is that so, Roseanne?"

Dan: "Hey!! Her name is mother."

Sarah Chalke eventually shined in other roles, but on Roseanne, she was just a pretty stand-in. Granted, the writing completely changed her, but Sarah's Becky had no ambition other than to strut her buns at Bunz, a skanky Hooters-like restaurant. They tried to show some dimension when she first debuted, admitting to Roseanne that she wished she could turn back time to when she lived at home and was just dating Mark, instead of being married to him. Very poignant, but ultimately fell flat because Sarah's performance was lukewarm. Had Lecy been back in the role, I would've felt for her.

They clearly didn't have much faith in Sarah as Becky and relegated her to the backburner for most of her run, giving Mark more storylines without Becky. Once Lecy returned in season 8, they started writing true to the character again, when Becky admitted she was unhappy with her trailer park life and wanted to go to college. That was Becky. She was an overachiever who wanted to make something better of her life than just having meaningless jobs like her mother.

Extremely spot on and well said Gray Bunny! Lecy *was* Becky. Becky could be infuriating but what teenager couldn't be? It felt very real to me.

I do think Roseanne pushed the bitchy rebellious Becky and goth Darlene a bit too long but it felt very real to me.

I agree completely, it was great seeing her evolution. But her "dark" period to me just lasted too long. She was dour and unlikeable for a little bit there and it was just time to wrap it up. That's what I was meaning. I don't mean she was like that the entire series, I know she wasn't lol.

All the talk about child stars talk made me realize that the child stars on this show turned out pretty damn well for Hollywood standards. Lacy and Sara both attended and graduated from prestigious college (and still work in the industry), Michael Fishman now works behind the scenes, Sarah Chalke has consistently found work since the show ended, and Johnny Galecki has built out a new fanbase for himself thanks to TBBT.

I guess Glenn Quinn was the only odd example, but he was an adult when he started on the show.

As volatile as she was, I'm guessing Roseanne was a pretty damn good surrogate mom to her TV children and the kids on the show must have really respected her.

    • Someone has been posted episodes from 1994 and Jill Powell (Marcy Lafferty) has a hot storyline right now. Just googled her and in real-life she is now openly out as a Lesbian with a transgender son.

    • Cast changes in 2025 (so far, not much has happened): GZSZ Pauline Afaja (Flo Kästner) departed on March 10th, 2025. She had only been on the show for about a year. Flo as a character never really clicked with the audience. Her final storyline involved her catching feelings for the much older Nina Reichelt Klee Ahrens Navarro out of the blue – while she was in a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Jonas Seefeld. Onno Buß joined the cast as Julian Kaltenbach on January 31st, 2025. Julian is Matilda's twin brother ... and another illegitimate child of Jo Gerner. Charlott Reschke, who had played Johanna Flemming on a recurring basis from 2015 to 2024, returned at the end of May. The 20-year old actress has now been placed on contract. Last week on GZSZ:

    • Not to ramble too far off topic but it happens a lot with comics too, especially only wanting to keep cheap talent around and pushing out creative voices. There are some patches where creatives can go to start their own worlds...wish that was true with soaps, but who knows, maybe it can happen someday. I never thought we'd get a new soap this year.
    • Very true & also at least in the case of stand-out HWs, it is fraught with exhaustion & burnout.
    • Plus we are never going to have a Shonda Rhimes, a Dick Wolf, or a Chuck Lorre of daytime -- a single brilliant person who could come in and change the genre -- because Shonda, Dick, or Chuck would only be able to work on one soap opera at a time, not three or four at the same time as they do in primetime.  As long as TPTB insist on the 60-minute format, we will never have another super influential individual like Phillips, Nixon, or Bell.  They simply would never have time to do more than one soap opera at a time and that would stifle their influence overall. Thanks. So maybe this is happening to some degree in other entertainment genres.  I don't keep up with the particular franchises you mentioned, so I was unaware.  I appreciate your perspective.
