Betty White Confirms She'll Appear on Saturday Night Live

Betty White fans, your prayers have been answered. The former Golden Girl will appear on Saturday Night Live in the near future, she confirmed to PEOPLE at Elton John's annual Oscars viewing party on Sunday night.

Fans have been clamoring for White, 88, to do SNL an idea she called "ridiculous" just a few weeks ago ever since her comic turn in a Snickers ad during the Super Bowl. One Facebook page devoted to the cause has attracted half a million fans.

When asked by PEOPLE, "Are you doing Saturday Night Live," she answered, "Yes," even if she remains perplexed by the groundswell of support.

"I don't know why or how," she says, "but it's been wonderful."

White didn't offer any details about the SNL gig, and it remains unclear when she will appear – or what it will entail.

Entertainment Weekly said she might appear on a special "Women of Comedy" episode with former SNL cast members Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – but executive producer Lorne Michaels reportedly denied that.

White's career resurgence hasn't come completely out of the blue. She did star with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in the romantic comedy The Proposal, and was recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Screen Actors Guild.

Hopefully if it's just a walk-on she will at least have some good material, if SNL bothers to write that these days.

Betty's career has gone up lately but she has never really been out of the public eye. Aside from a dry spot in the mid-90s, she has been a very active part of the lives of Americans for 60 years. She has almost never been off TV. That must be some kind of record.

If SNL manages to write something fresh and hilarious beyond old lady sex jokes I will be VERY impressed and pleased. I love my Betty.

It would be nice if Rue McClanahan makes a suprise visit as well. I'm not sure how her health is.

I wish they'd just let her host the whole thing.

She should just host the whole thing. AND she should just write the whole thing too. SNL is a wasteland these days.

She was! Loved her. But yeah, it was mostly old lady sex jokes, but then again, SNL doesn't really rise above that level of material regardless of the host's age.

She was the best host SNL has had in years. I am so glad that everything went perfectly. The whole cast and Jay Z were behind her, just exactly what she deserves!

Ah, I can't believe I missed it. Hopefully it'll be on You Tube, and somewhere where there's none of the "not available in your country" nonsense.

There are some clips on Hulu, including skits from dress rehearsal that got cut from the final show.

If I had a way to post it I would, I recorded it, didn't watch all of it, fell asleep, but I plan on watching it later today
