The Situation and Snooki are the characters to watch on this show! Trashy, unhinged, unstoppable fun! laugh.gif

Snooki is the best!

If I had to have sex with one person here, it would probably be him, because I know he's a nice guy, he's gotta be clean.

I tried to eat, but I couldn't get it in my frickin' mouth, 'cuz I'm disabled.

When I woke up I was like what did I do last night? Like what did I do? I f*%ked up ... story of my life.

Jack, I would so watch your show! It would be a gigantic hit!

lol, thanx!

Jersey Shore: A beginner’s guide to guidos

A new reality show has taken America by storm and it’s worth watching. So what’s Jersey Shore got that Big Brother didn't?

Benji Wilson

In a Los Angeles nightclub, Leonardo DiCaprio greets Pauly D and The Situation with “GTL!”. Large parts of that sentence won’t make any sense at all unless you have been in America for the past three months, and have seen the MTV reality show Jersey Shore. Pauly D and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino are two of the show’s eight young Italian-American housemates. GTL is one of their catch phrases: it stands for gym, tanning and laundry, the pillars of their lifestyle. And DiCaprio knows the catch phrase because he, like most of America, is a Jersey Shore addict. As Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, another of the housemates, who have become celebrities in their own right, says: “Leo is a fan. Pretty much every celeb we meet is a fan — Ashton Kutcher, Snoop Dogg, Mike Tyson. Frigging Leo said ‘GTL’ to Mike and Pauly. We were, like, ‘Oh my God, they’re bigger fans of us than we are of them.’  ”

From the moment it launched in early December, Jersey Shore has been the most talked-about show in America. The series finale, broadcast at the end of January, was the top-rated programme across television among 12- to 34-year-olds, a sizeable coup for a cable channel such as MTV. Its impact feels much greater — everyone from Leo to Leno has been watching.

The question is, why? On the face of it, Jersey Shore is a by-the-book reality show with a setup that is bleakly familiar. Put a group of twentysomething strangers who think “party” is a verb into a house, with very little to do, douse them in tequila, light the touchpaper (the presence of cameras seems to help) and stand well back. It’s the formula invented by The Real World, the founding father of weirdly compelling voyeurism, which was first shown, also on MTV, nearly 20 years ago — and is still going strong 23 seasons later. You might say there’s no need for a replacement.

If there is one thing we have learnt from two decades of flies on walls, however, it is that stars are found in unlikely places, and it is in the occupants of its Seaside summerhouse that Jersey Shore has hit pay dirt. Recent screen depictions of Italian-Americans have centred on mamma’s home cooking and fat men in tracksuits. Jersey Shore, by contrast, has opened a window on a youth subculture that has largely gone unnoticed. Mike, Pauly, Snooki and co are East Coast kids, tougher and less self-aware than their West Coast counterparts in series such as The Hills, but with an unassailable swagger. “We pretty much say what people think, but are scared to say,” Snooki says. “We do what they’d love to do. We really don’t care. I think that’s why people love it so much.”

Inevitably, an older generation of Italian-Americans didn’t love it so much. Before the series even aired, there were complaints based on the trailers alone. The controversy centred on the use of the words “guido” and “guidette”. The housemates use them as a badge of honour, but to many Italian-Americans, this was a racial slur. “I don’t think they understand how we take it,” Snooki says. “It’s not offensive at all. It’s pretty much a compliment.”

Snooki, meanwhile, became an internet star when another trail, for the show’s second episode, showed her being hit by a man in a club. “It kind of sucks — people know me because I got punched in the face,” she says. “We were at a bar, this drunk guy came over to us and was stealing our shots. I got into his face and he couldn’t handle it — he just punched me right in the face.”

For better or worse, those two controversies gave the show enough oxygen to thrive. Once people tuned in, they were treated to characters such as “The Situation”, a moniker probably best explained by the man himself: “Well, the situation was, I was walking through a beach club one day in just my shorts. A girl was with her boyfriend, and as she walked by me, she pointed and went, ‘Oh my God, honey, look at his abs.’ I was with a couple of buddies, and one of them said, ‘Dude, that’s a situation right there.’ And I looked down and I said, ‘Yeah, I guess that is a situation.’ And it kind of stuck.”

It stuck in part because Mike spends much of the series getting himself into situations, then saying, “That’s a situation.” The phrase’s ready applicability has seen it catch on in the USA. “My nickname is one of the biggest in America,” he says.

Those may sound like the choice words of a dolt, but the brilliance of Jersey Shore is that, beneath all the bombast and self-regard, there remains some empathy. You think of Snooki’s forlorn search for enduring love in the unlikely crucible of a banging nightclub, or Mike coming to terms with Sammi choosing Ronnie over him. When Snooki is attacked, the group grows stronger. “It’s not just about partying,” says Mike. “We connected as a family; we had each other’s backs.” That’s another Italian-American stereotype, but a positive one.

Jersey Shore comes to Britain at a time when reality television is supposed to be a walking corpse. This summer will see the end of Big Brother, another descendant of The Real World. We thought we were tired of witless show-offs who have grown up learning only the grammar of reality television, and can’t wait to get on screen to show how well they can speak the language. As Jersey Shore demonstrates, however, put the right people in the right place and there is little more engrossing than reality.

Jersey Shore is on MTV from March 21

Juiced: Jersey speak explained

Blow-up

The ludicrous haircut of Pauly D, so now known as “a Pauly D”. Requires a bucket of hair gel, a hairdryer and 30 minutes’ TLC every morning.

GTL

Morning routine for every self-respecting guido (see below). Stands for gym, tanning and laundry, where laundry is the preparation and selection of an outfit.

Guido (“Gwee-dough”)

An Italian-American practitioner of GTL. “Somebody you see on the street and say, ‘Wow, that’s a cool dude right there,’” according to The Situation (see below).

Guidette

A female guido.

Juiced

Steroid-enhanced.

The Pouf

Snooki’s signature hairdo — part beehive, part bagel. Construction takes 1½ hours and uses enough hairspray to massacre an ant colony.

Robbery

Stealing a friend’s girl. Robberies occur with surprising regularity in Jersey Shore.

The Situation

1) A given state of affairs at a given time; 2) Mike Sorrentino; 3) A pronounced set of male abdominals. Sorrentino is planning a workout book “for everybody to get their own situation”.

Hmmm... didnt know there was a thread for this.

I absolutely loved this show. It really didnt seem a,l that from the initial promos but once I started watching I was hooked.

Snooki and Pauly D were my faves. Especially Snooki, who I hated and thought was a complete ho at first.

The Situation was an !@#$%^&*] and how he acted when Ronnie and Sami got together was so lame. The only time I really enjoyed him was when he had his mouth shut (which was rare) and his shirt off.

Vinny was pretty cool, but not very interesting. I thought it was funny when he left the club with his boss's date.

Sami and Ronnie were annoying as f.uck as a couple. They were always fighting over stupid s.hit.

Angelique was a fake ass annoying bitch.

J-Wow was boring as hell.

Pauly D was my fave guy and the one I would love to f.uck, anytime, anyday, anywhere :P

I hate that they let that BITCH Angeline back on this. I thought it was so disrespectful how she walked out bc she thought she was too good for it. Now that its blown up and become much more popular than anyone expected, she's down for the Jersey Shore and now wants back in. MTV should have said no as they dont need her.. Id have rather casted a new chick to cause some drama

I'm more offended that they let Sammy/Ronnie back in the house. I just can't with them. Ugh.

My Angeline hate just multiplied. I REALLY wanted to see J-WOWW knock the bitch out.

The roadtrip was a waste of time. Really 15 minutes for that crap? Didnt find it too entertaining

I think Im going to be sick of the Ronnie/Sami drama. They annoy me already

At least we finally got a reason why Snooki has been looking extra orange lately. Blame Obama...lol

Couldnt they have all simply flew down to Miami?

Angelina is such an annoying bitch, she just doesn't fit in with the crew at all.

I think this Sammi/Ronnie [!@#$%^&*] is just being played for the cameras.

The Situation is somehow annoying me LESS than he did last year.

Still lovin Snooki and Pauly as usual.

Cant wait to see Snooki and Angelina fight, I hope Snooks whoops that ass.

lol...I was thinking the same thing. The girls were making such a big deal about wanting to get their first, yet it would be much faster to fly. The only reason driving made sense would be so they could have their own car while in Miami and not have to share or MTV made them for that boring first segment

IDK why I'm starting to watch all of the good shows I never bothered watching before, all this summer ;-). Watched the Jersey Shore season premiere re-run last night, these people are crazy and i love it!!

One thing: wow, that giant luxury house doesn't even have a washer and dryer?? When that closet collapsed and the drinks got all over that girls clothes, she went and washed them in the sink, LOL! That is just sad.
